Banks county .Gazette. VOL. VI. GENERAL CROP SUMMARY ▲ l>rjr Month Hw, \V h I'ot W-nfliep, Upenrd the Cos: ton—Oilier crop*. COTTON’. Our last report was tor the month of August, which ”-s; entin ly too wvt for cotton, resulting in much rust and shedding throughout t;u scute. Dur ing the mouth of September but iitt'o rain h:is fai pu in tie state, ex tin the soucr.ta t s< CD- 1- a- ■■■'■ ■ to tlie cry condition oi the atmo-pm re, it has 1) en excessively t.ariri for ta_ sea sou of tie your. These two c-mditions combine 1 have caused cotton to open very rapidly, the half grown bolls open ing preuie.ti vr, and the crop is fast being gathered, ginned r-i l no: Patus should bs taken ;o cat lor and handie the crop as nicely as poe-uo. as trash and dirt o ant description inevitably cause a lean non m the psioe. Again, never in p .ex nr mix dirty and clean cotton m tile same bale, hoping to sell ita i for t i p ire of the Clean cotton, for iuvaii y the entire bale tolls a- dii ty cotton The idv. ,-po 1 cotton buyers are com plain.ng t hi way American cotton is packed and demand aa Improvement Ui mat cue. 1 tnialc there is room for improvement and I trust that our farmers w.h take pains to cover their cotton bu s -is neatly as possible, Ind ia • <l# sides on l ends entirely with bagging so that less dirt may accumu late ou tin cotlou and less cotton be washed on account of dirt after ro.idl ing the lactones. As to the threat of Lever pool' i uyers to impose a heavy penalty on oir farmers f->r poor pack ing of cotton, th it is all bosu and non sensiv. Tney must lmy our cotton how i ver pa- k-it. but it is much to our in terest to pack it nea'ly and carefu .v. 1 iu i-t warn our people agaiust an other thin t Never sell till of the seed from the fi st and s>roud pickings of the crop an l depend upon the seed from the third ami lust picking for plant ing. llrs i< a very serious mistake, as very 111 my of the seed from the last picking are immature and light, and if they germinate after plan i:ig, can only develop into weak and sickly plants. Always reserve your piautiug seed from uio bottom or middle crop of cotton, lor they arc opt to be plump, heavy and fully matured, and when planted will develop iuto healtay vigorous plants. The crop will be gathered early this year and will not in my opinion exceed i: it reaches 7,- 000,000 bales. If my estimate of the crop is right, cottou will be soiling for higher prices in the spring than it is bringing ut present While I bi-iieve orves will be higher later on, I do not a .vi e holding eoltou. Each farm u r mii.t be his own judge of that matter, ;st ■ conditionssurround ing each are diXeriut. Ido. how-ver unite it.tingly advise against Belling cott t.s- .-d at the prices now offered. Every farmer iu the state knows how valuable they are as a feri izer for corn wheat, oats nnd other cir-ps, aud as . simple matter of economy, they should not be so dat present price.-: Keep your seed to build up j- ut compost neaps, with which to enrich your land, and you will be much better repaid than by seiliug them a. present prices. cons-. The promise o" the spring and sum mer has been fulfi . I, and the hu; > corn crop of the state r safe a all contingencies. Every . has a bountitul cr p, wim me ex ception of email areas here and the*- where the rainfall was dillicivt >, . that it is made, bo sure - ...iva it all care!ally, wasting • e, at the same time feediug liberally to stock of all kinds that they mav enter up t the winter in good cc ‘ ,u. Coinmeuoe early to feed the hogs you w ;.c to fat ten and kill, re ictr.’ ting ti.a' a bushel of corn or other feed v 1 make mu h more fat aud flesh '.mug th mild days of October tu..a alter the weather bj oomes colder. BOKGHUM AMD BUOAB CAN! The grinding of sorghum has n iu rull blast for two vr ■ past in Mid i's nd upper Oeorgi. ..la larger man* tlty of syrup will no made than it us ual. A good manv art not ’-tting tua yield they expected, hut t* c- iga is larger and in the apr g-it e j leid Will be large. Sugar cr .rinding has not yet commenced, but tu-. crop is good and there wili be plenty of syrnp and sugar from that source iu the lower half of the state. POTATOES. This crop is good all ov>r the state, and if omy put up with proper care, is Very easi.v kept. I don’t think we fully appreciate this valuable food crop, which oan be raise ; so easily and in tnoh quant.ties Many farmers still plant the poorer varieties, very defi cient in saccharine matter, aud there fore neither so palatable nor so fatt“u ing as the better varieties. Let ns strive to have the best in everything, not in potatoes oulv. I admit it is easier to raiso a Cuba, Hayti or St. Domi go than a Georgia vam, but after raffing the Cuba yam. yon have r. pot:' f o i. '£, wbeu I lived in southwest Greer,da, tne hogs wouldn’t ear, while if you raise a Georgia yam, yon have a potato lit for a king’s table. Pot at >s r.r.v g >od '’-■ad for all kinds of stock, .! 1 usnols being equal to 1 of corn in feeding value. field p;:m There has Imou larger area than usual planted throughout t ie state, and the cron of peas is a largi oue. There Is complaint from some Be-tion - that the vine* have not borne well, but, as a ruie, tao crop is a good one. obou.nd peas are reported good, and in .ovrer G"-- gia the fattening hogs are in r. y Casos already turned on them. T.ns crop is planted this st • ouis-flv to fatten hogs, for winch it imirably adapted. Not many are planted for market, thnuch. in our sister states of ,aiuet-i.'t n orta uaroun a i nay ore largely culrvateu 'or that purpose. In this era of diversifi* i farming, some of our fanners might find tuts u profitable crop. PTCE. Th3 crop is generally good nil over the state, with more planted than usual. I hope ii-xl year to see tills valuable grain more genemily planted than ever before. It is not hard tc. raise, yields fairly well, and is healthy aud uu ii tious for man and beast, Tho cmef trouble is to clean the hull from tne grain before it can bo cocked. The p?op" e on the coast who livo largely on rice, do this by pounding the grain a long time, using a wooden mortar and pestlo. (For commercial purposes tho cleaning is done in large steam mills.) There arc now on the markot small rice mills, which might ho run like the cotto.i gin* throughout tho country, the farmer paving go much toll to have his rice cleaned. Were these small mills established, I am satisfied that the pro duction of rice wouid bo greatly in creased. FUtriTa. The fruit cr p lias all bem gathered and disposed o , except some varieties ot apples, pear* and grapes. A few days since 1 saw h carload of watermelons in Atlanta shipped from snuo point in Indiana, and they seemed to be soiling vary rapidly. Can not some of our watornio on raisers have moicns lor the markot until tr Mi? Tne last in th - market. 1 think would do as well as the first, and command ju.-t as good prices, for the people seem to want thorn more when they are not to be had. Try it in-xt year, shipping south instead of north I think it would pay if moderately en gaged in. Much of the fruit was injured this rear by the very wet August, particu larly peaches, grapes and melons, none of winch were, iu quality, e.s good as usual in North Georgia, lacking the sweetness which suuahiue aloue can give. STOCK. Stock is in fnjr condition. Reports of some sickness and a tew deaths, amoi. g cattle, in different parts of the state, but nothing very serious, or that will not readily yield to treatment. Hogs generally reported healthy nnd in de cided! :• greater numbers than usual, though some localities, particularly in southwest Geo-gia. have r-'ported large losses from Cholera iam h ippy to re port that the farmers of tleorgia will not need much meat from the west next rear. C’ottotHflMil Mhul For Sivlno. The latest experiments reported on testing the effect of cottonseed meal as a food for hogs comes from tho Texas station l’ro.- -or Foule report! that from a series oi experiments conducted at that station the conclusion is reached that cotton- -d meal or hulls, either raw, boiled r.r rotated, cvnuot be fed to lio ;3 Pc"ii m-c.l was fatal in every case but oue, bo te i in.' il less so than raw. Various combinations of this load with others were tried, bat failed to give re sists of value. Mr. Forbes Mokes a Statement. Grove I.rvr i., Ga, Sept. 30, 1895. Editor Gazette: Will you please allow me space in tlie columns of v ur paper that I mav again show the people that the Grand jury at M:-i h court 1895. charged me with s2d. that 1 had already been charged with, and I showed the misu.ke to tiie committee on the Treasurer's books at Sept, court 1835, and then w-o: 1 acknowledge that 1 had re ceived credit for the pkO. but would not ackn nvlodge that I had been charged with it, just as though 1 could receive credit for that amount without first being charged with it. J hu e receipts that will show that I had already been charged with that same ik'O. i was taught that debtor always come before credit and 1 am satisfied that I was taught correctly. The committee said they could not find s>2o. charged to me on the book. I told them that it was ir. the whole amount of tax money, all tnat know anything about receiving inon-y from the tax collector know that it is turned over just as lie makes liis amounts and collects it anywhere from one n ndred to five hundred dollies arid he holds al! these receipts u-ul tin* final settlement, then these small receipts are taken up and put in one receipt, this is why they could not find ; "0. charged to itself. I found at the last court that I had not received credit for all tlie money Iliad on hand by ‘27.00. I lie lact Grand jury claim that I am still due the county 99.98, just take 47.00 from what they claim that will leave the true amount 52.98 and I can establish what I say by the records lof court and the receipts I hold. I write the above in self defense as the taolast Grand jurys did not make the correct report. Respect- G. C. Forbes. HOMER, RANKS COUNTY. GEORGIA: OCTOBER (0,1895. LOG A LN EWS AN 1> NO FES.
