Barn Burned.
On last Saturday morning about 5
oh lock Mr. Jacob S. Richey’s barn
was discovered to be on fire by one of
the tenants on the place who ran over
and aroused Mr. Richey. The fire
originated in the fodder loft over ihe
stables, and w hen first seen was about
bursting through one end of .he roof
as large as the flame of a brush heap.
The building was consumed in a
few minutes, together with two mules
and one or two thousand bundles of
fodder. Mr. Richey was slightly
burned about the head and face in
trying to rescue his stock from the
burning building. The los< falls
heavily upon Mr. Richey just, at this
time of the year when stock are
needed so much. The burning was
evidently the act of an incendiary,

A Novel Trial.
Mr. Martin, of Bulks county had
Lawrence Smith arrested for dispos
ing of the crops raised by him rs
cropper.
The trial erme up the 27 th inst. at
the Glade’s court ground in Hull
county. An old time Justice presided.
Oscar Brown Esq. represented the
State and Col. C. R. Faulkner the de
fendant.
Three witnesses were offered for
the state to piwe the defendant had
disposed of a portion of the crops
raised by defendant as cropper of
Martin.
Defendant stated that lie had car
ried away a pait of the crops aid
hadn't paid tho rent or for the goods
furnished him.
Next were tho speeches by the law
yers, and when reference was made to
the Supreme court and especially
Judge Bleckley, the presiding oflice r
ordered the Bailiff to call Bleckley as
lie would be the highest evidence of
his own law After several calls by
the bailiff and no answer the honora
ble Justice said he would not accept
any law without proof that there were
so many newspapers and books on pol
l.ics that lied that be would not listen
to any lawyer, and if the fellow who
reads it was not willing to swear that
the books was the law, he would re
fuse to acespt it, and would fine any
man who attempted to read further.
No more law was allowed and the
speeches were only made from the
facts. The lawyers refused to swear.
In making up his decision his hon
or, said he was satisfied the defendant
was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt
as he admitted that lie carried away a
part of the crop without paying rent
and for his rrlions and without con
sent of his landlord but lie didn’t
want to bind him over. That lie
knew the law and what his business
was, and that bis business was not to
bind him over right then, that lie had
never sent a man to Gainesville that
the court did not convict.
The Justice said : “I further charge
that unless the defendant brings back
the cotton and corn he stole of Mur
tins however by next Saturday I’ll
have to bind him over, if he does I’ll
dismiss the warrant. I therefore or
der the baiinT'lo hoM him until be
brings the crop up. I would hate in
sentence a man if he can replace what
he has taken from his neighbor,”
The Justice then adjourned his
court. After a private consultation
with the defendant, and his attorney
down at a buggy, the Justice cried
out he would dismiss the warrant, that
he had said lie didntto want bind him
over and that defendant was a brother
populist and nlliaceman and he just
couldn’t go ngin him conscientiously.

HOLLINGSWORTH-
All is quiet and moving on nicely

It is with a sad heart we state the
death of Mrs. \V. N. Caudeil, as she
was one of our most beloved and true
Christian women. She leaves a hus
band and three dear little children,
and many loving relatives and friends
to mourn her death, but we would say
weep not, for she has only gone on be
fore, and is now singing with the an
