Spain’s Credit Is No Good, l?ut She Is Securing War Vessels From Other Nations Without Any Trouble* A. special from London says: Spain has purchased two cruisers which the Armstrongs havo been building for Brazil, the Amavonins and ft s),stitt ship, tmaatfife'd, of 4,000 tons each, twenty-three knots and ten guns. Spain is also negotiating for and will probably secure two cruisers of a simi lar typo which have been building ifi France fur Brazil; Tilts AtiiaiSonius is ready for launch ing and her sister ship will soon bo ready. HONORS TO MAINE'S DEAD. The Graves of Victims In the Cemetery at, Havana Are Decorated. At Colon cfmetery, Havana, Friday afternoon the graves of 101 men who perished in ihe Maine disas sr were decorated «ith two large floral wreaths and a cross in the presence of a score or more of Americans, including Con sul General Lee, Captain Sigsbee and Chaplain Chadwick. Chaplain Chad wick offered a brief prayer. The American flag was spread for a time over the graves, but eventually re moved, and in its place was laid a red, white and blue ribbon with the follow ing stamped in gold letters: “In memory of our dead American heroes. The Pittsburg, Pa., Post says: The United States government, by Secre tary John D. Long, of tho navy de partment, has just closed a contract with Peal, I’eamck – Kerr, coal oper ators in the New Pittsburg district,for the delivery at Key West within forty days of 400,000 tons of steam coal. This contract is unauthorized by congress, but is made under the emer gency clause which permits the heads of national departments to make large expenditures on tho national credit without specific authority when the occasion arises therefor. FOUR TRAMPS ASPHYXIATED. They Build a Fire In a Refrigerator Car and Die From Coal Gas. Four men were found dead in a refrigerator car at Fort Worth, Texas, , Friday. Death resulted by gas from a fire built, with coal. Six men, supposed to be tramps, entered the car the night before, clos ing the door behind them. Adolph L. Lnetgert was taken from (be Chicago jail Saturday to the peni tentiary at Joliet, to which he was sentenced recently for tho term of his natural life. lie was followed by the cheers of many of the jail prisoners, who shouted their good wishes after him. He s’eeined at first to be glad of his re lease from jail and laughed and joked ■on his way to the train. When Joliet was rt–ched, however, ho broke down when the prison gates closed upon him. He silt in the war den’s office with tears rolling down his face, unable to : ay a word. SILVER QUESTION AGAIN. Fight For Its Restoration to be Made in Congress. A Washington special says: The silver question is to be at once reopen ed in congress, and a light in the inter est of silver restoration is to be made in the most practical introduced way. in tbe A bill is to be senate providing for the coinage of the seigniorage in the silver bullion which is now stored in the vaults of the treasury. The Trill will call for tbe coinage of 3,844,4)25 standard silver dollars, as a matter jf course at the present existing ratio of 16 to 1. The bill lias been drawn by Senators Bacon, of Georgia, and Martin, of Vir ginia. It is based on figures fur nished by the treasury department at the instance of Senator Bacon and in response to a resolution introduced by him which the senate adopted on Feb ruary 10th. COMPLICATIONS IN KLONDIKE, British Flag On American Soil Creating Disturbances. Five steamers arrived at Seattle from Alaska Thursday. The most im portant, news brought down was a con firmation of previous reports that a Canadian official has raised the British flag on what is regarded as American soil, and trouble at Skaguaywith long shoremen who objected to Indians unloading freight from steamers. The presence of United States troops alone prevented serious trouble. It is feared serious trouble will grow out of the Canadian attempt to collect duty on the summits of White and Chiikoot misses. Battleship Sails From Key West to Take Place of the Maine. Consul General Lee at Havana re ceived a cablegram from Admiral Sicard at Key West Tuesday night stating that the United States cruiser Montgomery sailed from that port at 5:40 o’clock p. m. Captain Sigsbee advised Admiral Manterola, as did also Consul General Lee, of the expected incoming of the cruiser and a bouy was consigned to her, where the Fern was moored. The bouy is near the wreck, for the convenience of Captain Sigsbee and Lieutenant Commander Woinwright in their supervision of the divers. ALABAMA COAL MOVING. Large Quantities Being Sent to Coast Towns From Birmingham District. A big rush of coal shipments is on from the mines in the Birmingham, Ain., district to Pensacola, Mobile and other gulf ports. The Louisville aud Nashville railroad has been running extra trains since the last of last week, carrying coal to Mobile and Pensacola.
