On August 22ud, the commissioii
«r,i abolished the election precinct of
the 1444th district, which was located
at Mitten, tha place for holding just
ices courts, and established it at Mr.
Dave Bragg’s house, who was a can
didate for couaty commissioner on the
populist ticket. We are very sorry
th« commissioners made this change.
Not because it will do our party any
earn),hut because it will lie leconven
ient for the people wholive-in
and do business there, to go some dia
tanee to vote, Several of these men
are railroad employee* and can not
ooBvenintly leave their business any
length of time. Consequently we are
sorry on that account.
There wai no need, either,
for the commissioners to abolish this
precinct. If they acted in good faith
m order to place an election precinct
iu the center of the district, why did
tliny not let the one remain in Milieu
and establish another in addition to
that one. The law amply provides
for this, and any one who tries lo
track the law, in obliged to con cede
it Section 69 of the Political t’ode,
Vol., 1 , “Said precincts must not ex
ceed one in each militia district ex
cept in militia districts lying in bole
or in part m incorporated cities,
townsand villages, in which umlilia
districts as many precincts rally be
established as may be necessary and
convenient for holding of su ' elec
tions.” Now, it does not take *, uw
to toll what that means - fiiilleu

missioners could ha’, provide for
the convenience >f the rest of the peo
ple in the di ict, if they saw fi t, by
establishing anothkb election pre
cient and letting the one in Mill in le
main. Buttlmy thought a cl ange
would benefit tbeir party—not th*
people—and that is why they id it.
It does seems to us that mou wh»
have been elected to office ami j who
have sworn to discharge their fences
impartially, would not he gm of
duch a flagrant violation of their [worn
obligations, a* to commit an a t that
smack* so cleaily of politics.
They al«o changed the |ct - f
the 260th district, and althotu i the
notice of the change shows it was
made on the 22nd of August, tlie
democrats were kept in the dark
about it until the 9th of September.
All this sort of business is clearly
wrong and the people are going to
condemn it in unmistakable term* at
the polls in October.
~ The regiatralion book* lw e closed
and the democrat* believe they havo
registered more than the pops. At
any rate, are perfectly satisfied
with the out look at tho present.
Continued and active work from
noxr until the election will insure
auccess.
A tax payer remarked the other
day that if the populist* continued in.
power the people would have to take
aha homestead to keep from paying
tha taxes, as they would go so high a
poor man could not reach them.
Our friend can’t homestead against
taxes but, no doubt ha will have to
move out the ofjeounty if the thing
containes.
The eommieaionars may well wiggle
and twist, because we have run them
in a hollow and they know it. Tlie
Tklkmioxk intends to watch the
interest of the people, it make* no
difference who is in power. When the
democrats get tn, if they don’t keep
straight, we will call them down too.

Nearly all the populists in the state

The few who vote the populist ticket
