^ SWINGING PINE.
" __
Mr John R. Humphries, curious freak of in Hal-1 his,
cyondale, has woods, a the shape of
turpentine pine m that swings in a
hanging with its tree, top locked in the
the air
limbs of another pine, and that lives
and runs gum without touching the
ground. The root of this tree was |
burned out several years ago, and it:
was left suspended about 16 inches!
from the earth, being held up by ;
having its branches interlocked with :
that of the other pine. It thrives !
and runs as much gum as its
bors, drawing its life, of courser
from the other tree, through the
branches. Tins is, indeed, a curious
freak of nature, a vegetable reproduction, we
might say, in the kingdom,
' of the famous Siamese twins.
ca OF rri ORGANIZED.
In response to a cull made to
the business men of Sylvania, a
good number met at the court
house on Tuesday evening, and
the gentlemen named below ex
pressed themselves in favor of
organizing some kind of indus
trial league tor this city, and en
tered their names as members of
the Sylvania Board of Trade:
W.'J. Walker, J. W. Powell,
P. R. Kittles, P. A. Mock, G. M.

The following gen

pressed themselves in sympathy
with such a movement: L. H.
Hilton, H. S. White, J. VV. Over,
street, J. R. Humphries, W. M.
Hobby and W. I. Cooper.
Dr. J. W. Powell was elected
temporary chairman, and it was
decided that the officers of the
above organization should be a
President, tive Secretary and Execu
Committee. The object of
the organization was briefly out
idea lined by A. B. Lovett, with his
of the scope of such an or
ganization and the good that
might be accomplished through
an intelligent effort in the right
direction to further the interests
of our borne town. A number of
suggestions had been made to
him, such as, advertising Lv
booklet distributed on the trains,
getting in touch with land and
i idustrial agents of railroads,
aIvertising in the large daily pa
pers, erecting a large sign board
at Rocky Ford explaining where
the Sylvania – Girard Railroad
led to, and countless other means
and ways of advancing the de
velopment of Sylvania. Mr. AV.
J. Walker made a strong talk
along these lines, urging a thor
ough co-operation of all in this
movement, burden explaining that, if
the were allowed to rest
on a few, little good could be
the result.
The nomination of permanent
officers was entered into, and
after some little balloting Mr.
H. S. White was declared elected
President and A. B. Lovett Sec
retary of the Sylvania Board of
Trade. On motion, the meeting
decided to clothe their executive
committee with power to elect,
either from their body or from
the Board of Trade at large, a
permanent President and Secre
tary, in the event Mr. White or
Mr. Lovett could not serve.
