How about corn, cane, potatoes
and peas—are you putting in
enough ? If not, there’s time
enough yet. Don’t slight this
quartet to—they will make things
musical for you in the fall.
And now, its about all over
the shouting—that is in Screven.
And there won't be "very much of
that. We are all brethren, dwel
ling together in unity, and we won’t
feel like whooping much, no matter
who gets in.
Yesterday was memorial day in
the South, and the graves of the con
federate dead were deckedf with
flowers, and the remembrance of
their deeds was quickened and kept
warm in our hearts. This is a sweet
pilgrimage that our southern people
make each year to the graves of
their hero dead.
San Francisco was a very wicked
city, it is said But it was not on
fins account, perhaps, that the earth
quake came—any more than the
eighteen upon whom the tower of
Si loam fell were sinners above all
that dwelt in Jerusalem. Christ
said, . , Lxcopt ye repent, ye shall all i
^likewise perish.”

Next Tuesday will conclude the
campaign for county offices—a
paign which has been freer from bit
terness and personalities than any
that most of us have recently
known. As far as The Telephone
knows, it has been a pleasant, clean
and friendly campaign. It is a mat
ter of pleasure and congratulation
that this is true, and we sincerely
trust that the same spirit will pre
vail until the close of the polls on
Tuesday next.
As far as we know, there have not
been used any unfair or unworthy
means to influence the voters—but
it has been a clean and legitimate
fight among the various candidates,
and all that has been said and done
has been perfectly fair and parlia
mentary. It is pleasant to be able to
record this, and to know that we
have had a campaign pitched on a
higher plane than is usually chosen
for politics. That these reflections
will yet be marred by any events
that may occur between now r and the
nomination, or on the nomination
day itself, we do not believe,
ney and whisky have been, and
believe, will be, conspicuously
absent as factors in this present
campaign.
We know of no better augury,
nothing that bodes better for the
future of our people, than this.
Here, indeed, is a menace to our ad
vancement, and even our civilization
itself, in the corruption and debau-
1 chery of those who hold the destiny

ballot that they esteem so lightly.
It should be the proudest day
manhood, when a free born citizen
walks up to the polls and says by
his ballot what shall be his country’s
history. No privilege that kings can
grant could be so great. There
the ballot W, he stands the peer of
any. man on earth. And, oh the
j pity of it, when the privilege is
! teemed so lightly, as to be trafficked
,

Screvfi'n county a
who are keenly and actively
lnterestett-in publif affairs, and in
.l the selection 1 of men „ jl, for the various
offices in» the county—as is evi
denced by the very large number
who have registered-—we have yet to
hear of anything discreditable that
has been said #r done, or that
would bring the slightest reproach
upon the name of our county.
Let us always keep it thus. Let
; us always hold as a high and holy
j trust this privilege of naming those
I who shall administer our govern
ment and make our laws. Let us
do this, and we will always have
good men in office, and good gov
ernment over us, and, as a result of
these, a happy and contented people,

THE EVENING GEORGIAN
The Telephone has received the
-first issue of The Evening Georgian,
the new paper of Atlanta, of which
Hon. John Temple Graves is editor.
a splendid edition, well worthy
of the master hand that will guide
its editorial destinies. Mr.
has been greatly missed from jour
nalism the past few months, and his
friends and admirers all over the
state are glad to welcome him back
into the profession that he has ever
adorned.
The Telephone is glad that Mr.
Graves has withdrawn from the race
for the United States senate, from
the fact that we need him where he
is; where his brilliant an I facile pen
can continue to carry pleasure and
inspiration to a host of readers in
Georgia who have been stirred so
often by his ringing editorials, and
have followed him with pleasure
through many a fugitive piece.
„ V/e T „ the „ Evening Georgian „
give a
warm welcome into our midst. May i
it live long and prosper.

See one who walks the Appian Way,
The noblest in that, passing throng;
A chained captive here to-day,
Yet guiltless lie of any wrong.
How stern and yet how sweet his
mien,
So kind his face is, yet severe—
This arehorite who, having seen !
His Lord, can count his life not dear

See one who at thy threshold waits,

Nor trophied chariot to thy gates.
A humble prisoner on the road.
And yet he walks a prince of men
