No wonder the price of coal is
high. The railroad officials are
bleeding the operators and with the
freight rate put at “all’ the traffic
will bear” and the tariff tax on coal
preventing competition, it’s a con
tinual rake off for some one from
the time it is mined until paid for
by the plundered consumer.
My, my, there has been graft even
in the South Carolina dispensary af
fairs. The investigating committee
is unearthing scandals that bid
fair to rival any of its predecessors
in the country. However, this
ought to be regarded as a species of
retributive justice on the Palmetto
State for going into the liquor busi
ness.
The Telephone weather man has
just looked out and sees a good deal
of lightning in the north tonight
(Friday.; Some said it meant rain,
and some a storm; some said one
thing, and some another—but the
political editor, he poked his head
out of the window' for a minute, and
explained the whole thing satisfac
torily when he told us it was merely
the reflection from the joint debate
in Atlanta.
The committee appointed by
l>resident Roosevelt have made some
shocking revelations with reference
to the methods employed by the
beef trust barons in their packing
houses. This question of pure can-j
ned goods is one that touches close !
to the hearts and homes of all the j !
people, and the report of this com-j
mittee would indicate that the whole
thing needs the general fumigation
that we feel sure it will get at the
hands of congress and our strenuous
president.
SYLVANIA WINS ALL.
