RUFUS E. LESTER.
The tragic death of Congressman
Rufus E. Lester in Washington last
Saturday is deeply deplored by his
constituency of the First cougres
sional district, No man had a
stronger hold upon the affections of
* the people than he, and of this they
ha v e given evidence time and again.
He wa's greatly beloved by the peo
ple throughout the country, and es
pecially so by those, his old com
rades, who knew him in the stormy
days of war and reconstruction. To
them he was not the congressman,
not the distinguished statesman and
lawyer, but he was always “Rufe”
Lester, whenever and wherever they
saw him. It was wonderful, and
now when we look back upon it,
peculiarly touching and beautiful,
how they loved to show their devo
tion to this their ideal hero in peace
and in war. Nothing could make
them swerve in their loyalty to him
—death alone has released them
from the loving obligation that
behind them to him, like “hooks of
steel.”
Ool. Lester well deserved the hon
kht-qtai aijuajd nfcwr - -
brave and gallant in war, and
served servea thpcnnntrv tnecountry well weu in m the me trvine trying
days that followed. -The record of
his public life is pure and stainless,
and upon his shield, that felt the
force of contlict through so many
years,, there was no spot or blemish.
And while there were some who
doubted the advisability of his con
tinuing in congress, it was because
of the impairment in his health and
activities, and not for reason of any
thing that could be brought against
his record.
He served his state and people
well, enjoying through a long pe
riod, as few men have done, their
love and confidence, and leaving
with them the memory of a life and
personality that they will fondly
cherish.
J. W. OVERSTREET FOR CONGRESS
Hon. J. V . Overstreet, of Sc rev
en, is a candidate for congress, to
fill the unexpired term of Col.
Rufus E. I,ester. Neither Mr,
Brannen nor Mr. Sheppard, can
didates for the regular term, will
go into the race for the unexpired
term, and Mr. Overstreet will not
be a candidate against them.
Hon. \V. H. Davis, of Burke, and
Hon. VY. C. Oliffton, of McIntosh,
have also announced for the un
expired term, and the race will be
between these three gentlemen.
The Telephone believes that
Ool. J. W. Overstreet is the best
fitted man for the position, and
we feel confident that he will
come out winner. The, interests of
the people of the First district
will be safe in his hands, and they
will never have reason to regret
haying placed theiustandard in his
keeping. He is well capacitated
in every way for this high and
honorable position—young, ac
tive, able and aggressive, and if
the people choose him, as we be
lieve they will, to fill out the term
of the lamented Lester, he will do
it worthily and well, takiijg up
the work and carrying it th rough
with honor to himself and with
credit and satisfaction to his con
stituency.
ON THE DIAMOND.
The Sylvania Atheletic Association
had the laurels wrested, from them
this week by the young boys from
Waynesboro. Three games were
played, and the best our boys could
do was to tie them on the third game.
We regret that the attendance was
not very large, and that the boys did
not come out on the expenses. The
people of Sylvania and vicinity do
not seem to appreciate the trouble
and expense the boys have gone to
in order to give them some enter
tainment through the summer; and
we trust that they will do better in
the future.
Tuesday’s Game.
The game Tuesday afternoon was
perhaps the prettiest that has been
played here this season—it must
have seemed particularly so to the
visitors. It was goodly sport to see
it, and, but for a wild throw, the
score would have been 1 to nothing.
As it was, Waynesboro wound up
with three marks, and Sylvania with
a big old circle.
The battery for Sylvania was Gup
ton and Black; for Waynesboro,
Lester and Foster. Umpire, Lovett.
In the first inning Waynesboro
was to bat, and three of 'em died on
first. In return, they sawed two of
the Sylvanians and put the t’other
And the second was like unto it.
Two visitors fanned and another out
at second; and two home boys hit al
space and the third was caught out.
No hit, no runs.
In the third, Waynesboro got a
bunch of safe hits, and made three
runs. Sylvania also got two hits
but made no runs.
The fourth time they went up
against it, G upton sawed two of them
and the third was caught out. They
reciprocated by catching two flies
from Sylvania and putting another
out at the first sack. Sylvania got
one hit.
How about the fifth ? Well, the
same story will do for both. One
sawed out, one caught out, and one
out at first. Hits none, runs none.
The sixth time, three of the Burke
boys died at first, though they got
one hit. Concerning Sylvania—well,
well, well, one fanned and two were
caught out on Hies.
Seven is a lucky number, but it
didn’t help us any, for notwithstand
ing we fanned two and put another
out at'base one, yet they caught us,
and sawed us, and killed us at first.
No hits—nary a run.
* This was playing ball some, and
the eighth time was just the same.
We headed off two of them at first,
and retired the third at home plate.
But they returned the compliment—
one at first, one at second, and gave
the third a palmetto. No hits, and as

Wednesday’s Game.
The sporting editor did not get a
full report of the game Wednesday
afternoon—kinder glad we didn’t.
The score was 9 to 10 in favor of
Waynesboro, and it was a poor
game, all around. We don’t like to
report such games, and will, there
fore, let it go with this brief notice.
The best players get off, sometimes,
and Wednesday was, apparently, an
off day for both Sylvania and Way
nesboro.
Third Game.
Blount opened up by flying out to
Oliver, Evans followed by popping
out to short stop, A. Neely grounded
to short and out at first. No hits,

route. One hit, one run.
Reddick grounded oat to second,
Oliver grounded to short stop, and
safe on wild throw, then Oliver
goes to second on passed ball. Rose
fouled out to catcher, Bussey ditto.

Black grounded to pitcher and

and out at first, Mock makes a safe
hit by third. Alims struck out.

Black took his base on balls, Mell
knocked to second, safe on first’s
error, Black out at second, Mell
goes to second on a passed ball.
Mock knocked out to third base.
No no runs.
Seventh Inning.
A. Neely makes hit to center field
and put out in trying to make sec
ond. Lester knocks to second, and
out at first, Carter knocks to, second
and safe on first. Fulcher knocks
to pitcher, who caught it on first
bounce, and threw Carter out at
second, retiring the side. One hit,
no runs.
Mims knocks to pitcher, who let
it go between his legs and put Mims
safe at first, Gupton hit to short,
safe on first, Mims out at second.
Reddick out on dead ball. Oliver
hit by pitcher and takes his base,
Rose makes a safe hit to center
field and Gupton scores. Oliver, in
an attempt to make home, was put
out, thus ending a very pretty game
of ball, the score being 2-2.
Following is the score by innings;
Waynesboro, 0 0 1 o O 1 0—2
Sylvania, 0 1 0 o O 0 1—2
Batteries: Waynesboro, Cox and

The Sylvania team went up to
Girard last. Friday, and played a
game Friday afternoon with the
Girard team. Our boys carried
off the victory by a score of 6 to
5. SvlvamVs battery was Mock
and Black. The Girard crowd
treated our boys royally, giving
them a good time, and taking
care of them in great shape.
The Girard team will probably
come down here for a series of
games before the season is over.
In Metnoriam.
To the bereaved relatives and
friends of Benjamin L. Hagan,
whom the angel of death has so sud
denly called away, we extend our
heartfelt sympathy in this their
hour of sore bereavement. Itpai ns
us to know that our loved onert are
swiftly departing Their this life and are
making way to their homes
beyond the skies. The angel of
death has seen fit to call from your
midst your loved mother and sister
only a short, while ago, but they are
not far away; you can imagine them
speaking to you from their heavenly
homes above in these gentle words:
As you think ol the dead on Christmas
eve —
Wherever the dead are sleeping,
And we from a land where we may not
grieve tenderly
I.ook down on your weep
ing.
Yon think us far, we are. very near,
FroiBugApu and 1 he earth though par
ted,
We sing tonight to console and cheer
The hearts of the broken hearted.
The earth, watches over the lifeless
, clay.
Of each of its countless sleepers,
And the sleepless spirits that have
passed away,
Watch over all earth’s weepers.
We shall meet again in a brighter land
Where farewell is never spoken.
We shall clasp each other, hand in
hand
And the clasp shall not be broken.
We shall meet again in a bright,
calm, clime
Where we’ll never know a sadness,
Our lives shall be filled like a Christ
mas chime,
With rapture and with gladness.
The snow shall pass from our graves
Ani in tier,
bright eternal
folloW r December.
,
When you if U9, think not of
the tom
Where you laid us down .in sorrow',
But look aloft, and bejond earth’s
gloom
And wait for the great tomorrow.”
