TAJHTT.
I hare lived la the Tillage of Hampton as
child, boy and man for nearly 70 yearn. If you
were to start fretn Exeter and travel north-
want aaya matter of 50 miles, and wore then
to look around, von w oukl a circle of plea* -
ant hills, afar tbo spires and the smoke if a
city, and at hand a large well-to-do vD'iaga.
That Tillage is Hampton, my radre place.
Supposing the month July, an) tho time i?
o'clock at a sunshiny moral?*, you might
also sea a shabby genteel did fellow, with
White hair, a stoop, good strong shoulders,
five feet right indies from the loginning to
tho end of him, loaning on a sixpenny oak
■tick, and altogether giving yon tfo$ Impres
sion of a man oking out a not uncomfortable
existence on something like a pound a week.
You might be Interested enough to aak some
passer-by who the old gantUsmui might be,
shutting along for his morning air and sun
shine. Tbo answer would be, “Dr. Book.”
The shabby genteel old fellow would be my-
erif.
I kept a small chemist's shop in Ilampton
toe many years, and tho Inhabitants called
mo “doctor.” Doctor is that doctor does,
and I bav* cured half the village, first and
last; but I tell yon plainly that 1 never wrote
M. IL C. B. or F. C. P. or any each rubbish
after my plain John Book. Ah, dear friends,
it mlgl)t surprise you were I to toll all that
haa happened in Hampton during iny time,
oor population, you observe, being a matter
at two thousand, more or lose There has
been a deal of wickedness—many an aching
heart, many a scalding tear, many a cruel
deed—few and simple folk though wo seem.
Bat why should I reuall anything oi the sort,
when aU my present concern is to describe
the way the story here following came to be
written! Our squire's daughter, os pleasant
spoken a young lady as you could meet,
writes novels, no lam told; and tne day,
knowing her well, 1 ventured to say to her:
“You don’t spend much of the year In
Hampton, miser
“No; Hampton Is dull,doctor. Boride*”—
this she said with a laugh and a bit of
blush—“you nee, 1 like to see life. There is
life in London, in Paris, in Madrid, but not
in Hampton.”
“Nor I said.
“Not a bit,” riw replied. “AH is quiet and
regular here, and people sleep and wake as
quietly as a butUrfljr opening and closing it*
wings as it bosks in the sunshine.”
Now, well I know what tho young lady
meant by “life,” and why ahe wanted to See
“life.”
“See here, miss,” said I, pointing
the churchyard; “there is a matter jjt two
or throe acres of green grass thiw j
carpet. If yon t-mkl just roll tftt green
coverlet aside, and read tho heart* that are
going back to dust there so auietly, you
would find enough life, a* yon coll it, to
keep a Mr. Bhakcvpearo busy tor a score of
years.”
“Ab, doctor," she mid, plex^ntly; “but
you and I don’t mean the sanqi thing, when
we talk about life.”
“Perhaps not, miss,” aald L
For all that, when 1 told her / had written
a sort of novel out of my own observation,
how plcasod she was, and how kind of her to
read It, striking out an* word, writing in
another, soaotimas msk'ng a sentence or two
out of her own bead. How gay my dull old
parlor looked, with that young lady sitting
at the tahlo, quill in hand, touching her Up
with tb* feather while ah* thought things
over!
“Now, that's prsttjr!” ahe exclaimed on*
morning. aaah*h*dputinalin*afhw own.
“Is it not pretty, doctarr
“Writ, miss,” 1 answered, “there's some
thing pretty about-some where.”
And so tb* novel was made ready far
print Fancy old Dr. Book in print-old Dr.
Book, with corrections and additions by a
beautiful young lady who talks French and
Italian, i-nd was not born for years after hs
%hnd marked Iris first gray hair!
Sobers 1a tb* whole story, from first to
last, by Dr. Hook, revised and corrected by
Vlas MIlll cent Harvey.

(For, you see, the boy was an orphan; sol

Mysterious {carats the
turned out. As for the old man, he scarcely
ever went outside his Uttle gmnlea, and all
we knew about him amounted to this: be
was tqll, decrepit, with a long white beard
and heavy .spectacle*; and seemed tn wretched
health. But his daughter cam* into the vil
lage almost overy day, and eooo became «
well known character.
She was a striking young woman. From
what I afterward learned her age can hardly
have boon more than twenty-two, hut the
looked six years older. Her figure was that
of ooe In the fullness of womanhood, her Lust
the moat shapely I aver saw, and her neck
and head wooderfully graceful. Bhe was
ipindful of the beauty of her figure, and wore
Nor shawl cleverly so ax to sot herself off;
and she knew that she had a pretty pair of
feet, and Jot other people know it, too. Her
step was quicx, end her carriage lively and
alert. She hod tho whitest skin poorfble, a
handsome face, boldly cut, and two dark
eyes easier noticed thnn forgotten. No doubt
you will say this catalogue would set up hinf
a dozen women in the beauty business, and if
I were painting a heroine I might be satisfied
with something less; but 1 splwrly assure
you that time after time, when she wont by
my store, I have wild to uiyMclf, “I have seen
a handsomo duchess, and a score of liamLsonie
dairy mnids; bet, duchess or dairy maid,
your like I never saw. And how U It, miss

that shabby home, you can nffc it to wear

member, I admtrod this young woman’s
appearance, and that was all. Something in
her manner gave ino a turn uguirnt her.
There was wickedness in her eves—1 export■<
myself awkwardly, but my way of putting
it is this: bur eyes seemed such that, when
you looked into them, your own were fn*-
toned for a momont, and in withdrawing
your glance you soemed to draw tho wicked
oyos after you. Not tliat she tried any arts
on c»e, gray-beard as I was; but I could see
bow she laid lierxelf out to fnsdnato others,
and succeeded Upon ccnsideration, I put
her down for an octree*. Evidently ahe had
been at some work that had nirvln her easy
and familiar, and had rubbed tH blushes off
her cheeks. Perhaps she never crossed the
line tliat divided propriety from Impropriety,
but she wom pretty well used to skating do*e
to tlio thin ice, if I may so speak.
Our rector, who made a point of calling cm

soon found his way to Tumblodown Farm.

rector.
“Whatr cried I.

“Strangest name for a Christian I ever

Somehow 1 am fond of that phrase, and
often uso it.
Tho rector looked a little sharp at mo; ho
always frowned at the Kmallcret bcgiuuings of
what in bin sermons be used to call evil .-peak

me mare curious than ever to know some

“Bide your time, John Book,” said I to my

Once or twice Mr. Hardware was seen in
the village. , He was very Infirm, and used
