SIX CHILDREN BURNED.
Pittsburg, July 20.—Last night
about 11 o’clock, Mr. Jcs.ah M. Ev

hut, three miles from Grayhampton,
Cleat field county, was destroyed by
fire, and six of his children, ranging
in age from six • to fifteen years,
were cremated Evans was awak
ened by strange noises, and undei
the impression that burglars were
about, took his gun and went outside
to.investigate. To his hoiror he
discovered his humble dwelling in
flames. He quickly gave the alarm,
but before he could reach his six
children, who weie sleeping on the
second door, the roof fell in, and in
a few minutes the whole building
wa* ablaze. His wife and thiee
youngest children, sleeping on the
lower floor, weie taken out safely,
but the parents were forced to see
the others peiish in the flames.
This morning intelligence of the
fearful calamity spread rapidly
throughout the country, and hun
dreds of people were soon drawn
to the scene. The mangled remains
of four of the children, charred and
unrecognizable, were gathered up
and buried in oue coffin. The other
two were apparently reduced to
ashes, as no trace of the remains
could be found. The parents are

community is excited over a horror

Keene, N. H., July 20.-Barmuui’a
large Asiatic^ elephant “Albert,”
which killed Keeper James Sweeny
at Nashua, on Saturday, was taken
to a ravine in the surburbsof Keene,
this afternoon, and killed. He was
chained to four large trees, and the
localon of the heart and brain was
marked with chalk. Thirty three
members of the Keene Light Guard
were then marshalled in line of fif
teen pace?, and at the word “fire”
the same numhei of bullets penetra
ted the vital spot. The huge beaht
fell dead without a struggle. “Al

been used as a performing elephant
until the last three months, when he
had shown such temper that he was
withdrawn from the trained herd.

Spear gad Jenkins.
The Atlanta correspondent of the
Telegraph and Messenger says: An
incident in the nature of a side-play
occurred yesterday afternoon at the
base ball park which recalls a piece
of evidence used in the tiial of the
Banks county ku klux cases, and
which went far towards their con
viction. The teams of Judge Speer
and ex-assistant United States Dis-
tiict Attorney happened to he stand
ing near together, and the horses,
not aware probably of • the strained
relations . existing between their
masters, immediately struck up an
acquaintance. Jenkins* horse was
a gray, and Judge Speer abruptly
said to his driver, “Thomas, remove
that gray horse.” Mr. Jenkins fixed
Thomas with his glittering eye, and
remarked to him quietly. “If you
touch that horse you’ll find out what
that d—d Emory Speer has done for
you.” No further developments
were reported.
