DAILY BANNER WATCHMAN, ATiIENS, GEORGIA FRIDAY MORNING, JULY 24, 1SS5 banne^-watchmm. OFFICIAL ORGAN OF CITY AN'»(/>l: *TY T. L- GANTT, Editoh * PnofKIETOil. THE GEORGIA KA1LK0AD CCsUUiSlGR. We l»»vc more than one?, through the Banner Watchman, (teiiouiiced, in the m »st unmeasuieJ t- 11m, the picst-nt Railroad C«'inmiM>ion of Ge •rj'ia, and are jiow glad to «ee that the legi»latuic in tackl ; ii' the mon'trou* act, with a proh i!»i!ity of removing some ot its mo-t objec- ti niahle and oppictsivc fc itures. There is not to-day in our state a county but Ik suffering from the blighliug effect* of th.s usuipalious measure, while tlousaud* of citi zens. who have invested their all in these aiterics of trade, ate robbed of a fair aud just income upon their capital. Railio.id budding to-day in Georgia is at a * dead halt, and will so remain until the hand of ty ranny is lilted from these necessary enterprises. Our*neighboring states are being checkered with new roads, while Georgia sits with fold ed hands and secs a golden oppor tunity slip by. But the people are now realizing the results of their folly, and we feel assured that their representatives in the general as sembly will make haste to undo a wrong*and at the same time relieve our state of a withering curse that saps all hope of progress and advancement. We do not favor a total abolition ot the Commission, for in these days of combinations and syndicates tke people must have some protection; but at the same time we must hold the scales of jus tice equally balanced, and see that in our desire to benefit the masses we do not oppress any one class. This is just what our Railroad Com mission is doing. The legislature has placed this immense property, that came into our borders trusting to our justice and protection, com pletely at the mercy of three men, who have the power, any day, to bankrupt every railroad in Georgia- We can name a number ot cases, too, where thiifty little lines of railway h ive actually been given away on account of an inabil ity of the stockholders to operate them at the tarifl fixed by the Com mission. Take even our North- Eastern, built oy the city of Athens and the people along the line. Un der the old system it was doing well, and every one was satisfied. With its surplus receipts the officers had purchased a new engine and coach es, and the road bid fair to return a dividend to its owners. Upon the establishment of the Commission, that forced it to compete with lon ger and better established lines, the income diminished to rapidly -that the road actually had to be given away to have it operated. The •ame applies to the Elberton, the Hartwell and Lawrenceville roads. Here we see the laws of Georgia actually destroying the value of private property and indirectly rob bing its own citizens, in ^he name of p otcction agaiftsC. monopolies. ~ Is there either honesty or justico in such? We do not believe there it any fair-minded- man in Georgia but who will endorse any act pass edby the legislature Woking to the righting of this wrong. Athens is to-day suffering under the blighting hand of this Commission, aad we call aloud for relief. We ere hero in d in by railroads and it is impos sible to move a stepnntRcapital ists, who invest in* railroads, are as. sured of protection. We contend that this Commission, blights rather than build up -the state; ..it oppress es—not relieves. J It is m despotic move, tending Ib confiscate private propeny, and is a living disgrace to the name of our ‘ republic. No step ever inaugurated by the mon archies of Europe was more Out rageous in its tendency. * 'lathe sin gle item of guano shipments, the Central road was last season rob bed of $40,000, every cent of which went into the pockets of foreign manufacturers. r.Thuis we 1 people and section impoverished that strangers may reap a golden harvest. Mr. George L Seney saved con ' siderable money from the wreck, and his wife had a fortune made over to her. The name of Seney is honored from one end of our conti nent to the other. Although rumors of war between Russia and England have again died out it is not at all impossible that they will soon be renewed again. Russia wants Ziilfikar pass and means to have it if she can get it. She has no claira to it, but that fact does not seem to be a bar to Russia trying to get what she covets. Some time ago Russia abandoned all thought of Zulfikar pass on condi tion that she should have Pendjeh. She got the latter place and is now intrigueing for the former. It may be, however, that she will not risk a war with England at this time in or der to get it Hall's Vegetable Sicilian Usir Renew? cr never (alls in restoring gray hair to ire youthful vigor, lustre and vitality. Principal Depot 374 and 876 Perl St. tUw York. ~ Augusta Chronicle: “We have heard, from an expert, that the re* lease of the Richmond and Danville railway from its contract to build frem Tallulah to Clayton, changing the obligation from Athens to Mad ison or Social Circle, will result as follows: (f.) An obstruction, it not annihilation, of the Augusta, Elberton and Chicago project. (2.) The establishment on the Georgia road of a competing point with Athens. This would jeera to be case of homicide and suicide—in a railway and municipal sense.” The first step has beeu taken to wards drawing the color line at Asbury Paik, N. J. Asbury Park and Ocean Grove are close together on the Jersey coast, and a very little distance from Long Branch. Both places are resorts for people who want to mix religion with surf bath- j ing and sea breezes. The philan thropists of Yankeedom are now protesting against the “man and brother” parading in the park. We are overwhelmingly on the side of Cuffee in this fight. John Roach was to build the At, lauta, Boston and Chicago new steel cruisers for the navy, in eighteen months. Two years have gone by, and the vessels are not yet completed. Now tha t he has failed in business and made an assignment, perhaps the cruisers may soon be finished. The Sparta Ishmaclitc says: “Em ory Speer as a United States district Tudge is agreeably disappointing all his opponents. His decisions arc those of an able, just and conscien tious Judge. As we bitterly con demned his appointment and confir mation, we deem this endorsement due his judicial conduct.” George Barnes, of Augusta, is one of the best men in congress. He went on to Washington to have their republican postmaster remov ed, and refused to budge an inch from the White House until the President gave him an interview and promised to make the desired change. Speaking of tne hugging and kissing scene in the recent perform ance at the Mahone beer garden in Richmond—when Mahone and Riddleberger kissed each othes, and Attorney-General Blair kissed them both—the New York Mercury per tinently remarks: “When three Jndases hug and kiss each other in puplic there is some deviltry ahead.” The negroes are going West as weUns the white men, but while the latter are moving along the thirty- ninth parallel the former are keeping step along the thirty-second. The centre of the white population is now near Cincinnati, while of the black population is near Macon. General P« M. B. Young is going to sail for 6L Petersburg in a few days. I began to feel I could never se cure relief, as I had spent two hun dred and fifty dollars witout any re lief. The disease was so excruciating that it often prevented me from per forming my daily duty. I was ad vised to try the efficacy of B. B. Its action on the kidneys is simply wonderful, and any one who needs fl real, speedy and harmless kidney medicine should not hesitate to give B. B. B. a trial. One bottle will convince any one. C. H.
