A HORNED SNAKE.
Almost every one in Atlanta
knows Mr. I. S. Payne, the hand
some young baggage master of the
Air-Line “Belle.” lie had a most
exciting experience »n which he
came near losing his life a few days
ago.
On Sunday last, while driving
along the road leading from Gaines
ville to White Sulphur springs, he
discovered on the roadside what he
thought to be a terrapin His horse
stopped, snufled the air and refused
lo go further. By this time the
object on the roadside begun to
move, and on closer inspection, it
proved to he a snake, resembling
somewhat the adder species. After
slowly uncoiling itself, it stood erect
on its tail. Mr. Payne got out of his
b u £gy» and with a stick, dealt his
snakeshig a blow which ended its
life, but before he had time to
return to his buggy his attention
was attracted by a noise in his rear,
and turning about quickly, he saw
ANOTHER SNAKE
of the “hoop” or horned species.
Thr* snake had its tail in its mouth
and was rolling like a barrel hoop
toward Mr. Payne, who seized a
stick and, after making several
passes at the monster, succeeded in
killing it. The snake was making
a determined attack upon Mr.
Payne, and if in the fight it had
stuck its horn in him, death would
have probably resulted. After dis
patching the snake Mr. Payne took
the trouble to secure the horns,
which he intends having made into
watch charm.—Journal.

was written by William Wishart,

was that Wishart was a married
man and that he had no right to
pay attention to other ladies. Mr.
Coker was bound under a bond of
$500 to appear before the present
term of the United States court for
