When Flora Temple trotted a mile in 2:19) the achievement aston ished the world. The mare was lookc uponjas a wonder. Few then believed that a mile would ever be made by any trotter in less than 2:15. It took eight year* to lower the rec ord of 1859, and down to 1874 the best time made was 2:17. In that year the record was reduced below 2: <5 by Goldsmith Maid, who scor ed a mile in 2.14. It was then generally thought that the limit of a trotter’s speed would prove to be 2.10. But Maud S. had not yet made her appearance, nor had Jay-Eye-See. The former brought the record down to 2:10 in 18S1, and three years later the latter reduced it to 2:10. The prophets of the turf next made bold to predict a milo in 2:09, and even J;o8. Maud S. has rapidly lowered the record below the former figure, and now Piesidcnt Edwards,of theCleveland Association, expresses his conviction that the wonderful mare can trot in 2:07 under favorable circumstances, and Mr. Bonner declares that it will not surprise him to see the predic tion verified. Well, the matchless animal has aheadydone wonders. Her achieve, ment of a mile in 2:oSJ on a “slow track" is marvelous, but still more wonderful is the fact that she flew over the third quarter at a 2:04 gait. She may yet fulfill the predictions of her most ardent admirers. But what would have been thought twenty cr even ten years ago of a man prophesying a 2:07 trotting record? And what is at last to be the utmost limit of the trotter's speed? Will a mile ever be made in two minutes? The turf history of the post two years is certsinly encouraging to bold predictions. The school of Technology should be located at Athens. It is the place for it. The crops are good, Gen. Grant’s burial place chosen, and the fence questiou settled. What next? Hanging is much better for wife- beating than the whipping post It makes one less of the number on baud. The members of the legislature still continue to prance up and down the Air-Line road every Sat urday evening. The sun will be totally eclipsed for two minutes in September. This will be gratifying to those suffering from the heat. Can a mule driver be a Christian? Is a recent conundrum for the Holi ness people. The general impres sion is that it is an impossibility. The factjthat two ex-Confederatc Generals are to act as pall-bearers at the Grant funeral will probably cause the orgens to weep copioualy. John Triplett, of the Thomaaville Times, says it it positively too hot to discuss state politics end suggests that everything be stopped until af ter frost. The temperance cause will go at a discount if J. E. Bryant is allowed to take a leading part lie can’t even manage the negroes. They know him too well. Mr*. Grant will have an income of 930,00a a year. This small amount ought, at least, to keep the wolf from the door during the heat* fd term. 1~ Cotton seed is the southern bo- nanta. According to the figures furnish ed by the Navy Department, Mr. John Roach has received a very handsome sum from the government since he has been in the shipbuild ing business. Since 1802 the total amount paid him by the Navy De partment is $10,333,626. From the above it looks as ii Johnnie broke with a pocket full A great many people have been superstitious concerning the play of lightning about Mount McGregdr. It must be confessed, even by the most matter of fact persons, that there it something remarkable in the incident, and it it not to be won dered at that a certain class of minds should suggest a supernatural cause. Colonel Old Virginia is in luck. John S. Mosby, who turned radical for the take of the spoils, and who waa Hayes' and Aithur’s Minister to China, declares that he “will never set foot on Virginia soil.’’ This renegade ought not to be allow ed to put his foot on Virginia toil.
