A committee of the "Union of
American Hebrew Congfcga tlon,”
held a meetiugjn New York city,
Friday afternoon, to ta.kp Stepp for
an appropriate commemoration of
the death of Sir Moses Montefiure
After some discussion it was decided
to recommend that a memorial ser
vice be held oarly in October; and
on the same day In the 'synagogues
and temples throughout the United
States, and that a prayer meeting be
held daily for the thirty days follow
ing the funeral in all synagogues
and charitable institutions. It was
also resolved that a committee be
appointed to make arrangements
for * memorial service in New
York city.
It has been decided to erect no
statue or monument to the great
philanthropist, as it was wisely said
that hii memory was immortal, and
the money which such a memorial
would cost could be more appropri
ately expended in assistance to tho
Montefiore Home and other charita
ble institutions.

HOISTED ON ITS OWN PETA’ID.
The Macon Telegraph has always
b6e$, a great stickler for journalist^
, courtesies, airdj h*»^ devoted col
umns to exposing and denouncing
other papers lor reproducing news
items without the proper credit.
This was ail legitimate and right,
and we never entered-a word of
protest so long at this censor, . kept
its own door swept dean. But
when a paper condemn! in 1 others
an act that itself Is guilty of, then
we think it time to tear the mask of
hypocrisy from its face and show
the peoplp the inconsistency of its
course. There are few papers in
the country but will sometimes ap-
proptisle a good news item without
giving credit to the source frdm
whence it was derived. While we
do not commend such a system of
news foraging,at the same time it is
not to had as stealing a leading edi
torial, without even a quotation or
change of a comma, and trying to
pajm it off on the reading public as
t ttte Jjrain worE of the offending
edttorT List* Sunday the lead
ing' 1 - editorial in the Macon
Telegraph & Messenger was headed
“The Funeral'ol lien. Grant,” and
fifled exactly one column in that
piper. It gave a description of oth
er distinguished military burial-, an
account of which was found “in a
modern compilation.” Tlmt identi
cal article appeared in the Chicago
Times of August 1, was properly
credited to the Boston Advertiser
of July sSjjh, and was clipped from
igB.Jsirticle on “Famous Funerals.”
Now, if the Telegraph intends to
practice what it it preaches, why
did not that paper announce that its
leader was taken bodily from the
Boston Advertiser, and then enclose
the portion thus appropriated with
quotation marks? It was clearly the
intention of the T. & M. editor to
leave the impression on the public
mind thst the letder in his Sun-

case of being caught up with pave a
way for defense by the use of the
words, “we find an account of
them in a modern compilation,” etc.
Wouldn’t it have been more honest
to have written, “We flip the editori-
rial entire from the Boston Adver
tiser?” The height of dishonorable
journalism is to steal the carefully
prepared editorials of another pa
per and reproduce them as original,
and when we see this same thing
done by a sheet that has for years
berated the Constitution for clip
ping simple news items—as is done
by every paperin the country—it Is
time to call a halt. The Telegraph
ha* always held itself as an exponent
of “honest journalism I” Bahl We
have never as yet known the Con
stitution to appropriate an entire
leader without credit! But it seems
that of late the T. & M. has played
too bold a game. Only a few weeks
ego it stole an article from the
Nashville American, and on being
caught, apologized and said it was
a “typographical error,” and the arti
cle should have been credited, etc.
Nowiit produces boldly as Its own Rtf
editorial from another paper. “Oh,
consistiac/, thou art a jewel I?
