sad accident occurred in Clear creek
township, near here to day. Chat.
Kerr and Amos Garland contracted
to clean out a well for Robt Me-
manus. The well was known to be
in a.dangerous condition by reason
of foul gas, and men first proceeded
with a plan to ventilate it before
commencing work at the bottom.
Garland descended into the well,
and was lowered to tbe required
depth. Operations were watched
by those on the surfsee. They
leared no danger.
Garland had been in tbe well but
a few moments when he was teen
to release bis hold upon tbe rope
and drop heavily to the bottom ol
the well. He uttered no cry and it
was evident he had been overcome
by gas. The moment his condition
was discovered, Mr. Kerr placed his
foot in the rope and ordered the men
to lower him. On reaching . ne bot
tom, he tied the rope firmly around
the apparently lifeless body of
Garland, and then called to the men
to hoist away. He remained in the
well while Garland's body was
drawn out, and then the rope
was lowered for bim. Kerr
was almost unconscious by the
lime the rope reached him, but they
began to haul him up. They had
scarcely given tne windlass a dozen
turni, when the sudden lighteninf
ot the load told them Kerr hat
dropped back into the well. A
good deal of confusion ensued, and
it was three-quarters of an hour be
fore Kerr’a body was taken from
the well, and he had then been
dead half an hour.
Kerr and Garland were brothe-s-
in-lavr. Kerr leaves a wife and one
child. Garland survived for five or
six hours after being drawn from
the well, and died to-night.

At a Capitol reporter was coming
down the court house steps this
morning, he saw a negro making
rapid strides towards tbe station
bouse. Tbe repoiter followed, and
taw CapL Crim jumping on a Wash
ington street ear. Tbe reporter
stepped on the car and asked the
Captain what was up,and be replied
that negroes out in the northeastern'
suburbs of the city were in e
state of excitement at the appear*
anceof what they called a wild man
. For several days past, at various
times, it has been reported that
something “neither brute nor hu
man,” bad been seep in the neigh
borhood. These reports caused
tome uneasiness, but, as only seeing
was believing with most of the
hearers, there was no great alarm
until yesterday afternoon, when
three half grown negro children
cable in from the* woods and said
the wild man was in sn old deserted
tog cabin, not more than half a mile
away. About twenty men and wo
men repaired continuously to the
place, and when within zoo yards
of the house, saw a terrible looking
object rush into the woods.
“And you can find it right dere
nuw, boss,” said a negro to Captain
Crim. So the Captain and the re
porter, with about one hundred col
ored guides, went tramping through
the woods. Captain Crim was
skeptical and the reporter was
doubtful, so neither were prepared
for the startling lensation soon to
be developed.
After walking little over a half
mile the negroes in the front came
to a sudden halt and exclaimed in a
whisper, “Yonder's the house!”
Capt. Crim tried to get the ne
groes to surround the cabin an-1
make an effort to capture whatever
might be in the house, but the color
ed posse were too badly frightened
to take say steps toward acting on
the offensive. So the Captain and
the reporter, armed with stout
sticks, slowly approached the open
duorway of the hut When within
150 yards of the house, the reporter
saw something move within, yad he
grabbed the Captain by the arm and
said “Watch out, Captain!” TI.en
came
A HORRIBLE YELL,
and a startling apparition dashed
out of the doorway and turning to
the right disappeared in the woods.
The object seen certainly had the
shape ol a- human being, but the
body was covered with long shaggy
hair and the feet ,ao(J hnuda resem
bled claws. Captain Crim and the
reporter are both of the opinion that
the object they saw is a wild man—
a human being living in the woods
like an animal,
A party has been organized who
will go out to-morrow for the pur
pose of trying to capture the strange

Mr. F. A. Gower lately carried on
a series of experiments with a view
to testing the adaptability of bal
loons to war purposes. Mr. Gow

tific world as a joint patentee of the
famous Gower-Bell telephone, had
made Hythe the centre of his oper
ations, and thence made several as
cents. Hit final undertaking in
this country was a successful aerial
voyage across tbe channel early in
June. He continued his trial trips
in France, and met with a misad
venture while awaiting an opportu
nity of returning iu a balloon to
England.
Undeterred by this, he made an
ascent on tbe iSth of July from
Cherbourg, and since that date
nothing definite is known of his
whereabouts. A pilot balloon
which he bad previously despatched
has been found and sent on to
Hythe; end a balloon has been
picked up without a car some 30
miles off Dieppe. Sixteen days
having now elapsed since the as
cent and no message having been
received from Mr. Gower, whose
invariable practice it was at once to
notify by wire hit safety at either
Cherbonrg or Hythe, at both of
which places he hat left property,
tbe gravest fears are entertained
that he baa been drowned, The
experiment* being carried on by
Mr. Gower were within the cogni
