PUIUC SCHOOLS.
How any man, with the advance
ment and interest of Athens before
his eyes, can oppose the establish'
ment ot publie schools, is beyond
our ken. Free schools wifi do
moro to build up tho business nnd
population of our city than all tiie
ether projected enterprises com
bined. A leading gentleman from
Atlanta remarked to ns, in discus
sing the phenomenal growth of
that place, that it was mainly at
tributable to free education for tho
masses, for these schools have
done more for tbo city than every
railroad that they built. Other
places much smaller than Athens
have long since inaugurated froo
schools, and they returned an hun
dred fold the cost of their
maintenance. Wo cannot believe
that tho voters of Athens arc so
blinded to self-interest as to defeat
this great measure. There is not
a tax-payer in the city but will
reap a generous dividend on the
amount he is assessed for their
support. That tbero is opposition
to free schools we must admit,
but we believe that it will be like
casting straws against the whirl
wind to attempt to defeat them.
The advocates of free education
are already assured, and by the
7th of November will present an
unbroken phalanx at the polls that
will cany before it all opposition.
Let us meet, organize anil got to
work. There is no time to be
lost. We must be up and doing.
There is no uecd to fear defeat if
the fair proper, select shows of all
kinds will be on the grounds, and
no pains or expense spared to
render tbo fair n grand success.
The managers have beeu meat lib
eral in their arrangements, and
looked mure toward mnking this
opening of the lair a success than
with on ere to gnio. Tho railroads
have given reduced rates, and
there is nothing to prevent Athens ( ai
