YVe are Informed that Messrs. 11.
C. Strlngfellow, YV. B. Marston, S.
Kuss, and other prominent Red
River planters, have raised a fund
and employed an experienced per
son to blow out the tails in Grand
Bayou. Moat ot our readers are
aware that Grand Bayou ia a stream
about four miles in length, running
out of Bayou Pierre lake, just above
Marcelle landing, and running into
Red River at the old Grand Bayou
landing. This is a very wide and
deep stream, and below the falls, in
it, hat about half the carrying ca
pacity ol Red River. Over the
falls in this stream, the water
plunges perpendicularly downward
twenty-one feet Ten years ago,
these falls were near Red River,
but they have gradually reached,
until now they are only a very short
distance, say zoo yards, fiom Bayou
Pierre lake. Now we understand
that tlie design of the above aamed
gentlemen is to blow out the soap
stone formation from the falls to
the lake, which will, in efltct, lower
iwethe .water level in Bayou
Pierre twenty-one feet and drain
the greater portion of that immense
body of water, and aa a natural con
sequence, the fall being to much
giejter, a much larger volume of
water will be' drawn out of Red
River through Tones bayou, greatly
to the relief of all plantations on the
narrow and shallow river near
Shreveport. In fact the rctultt of
this simple and' practical scheme,
can scarcely be Imagined. It will
be a great relief to the planters near
Tonea Bayou, It will reclaim from
ovet flow thousands of acres ol
land in DrSotCtand Red River par
ishes, it will maMtell the lands on
Bsyou l’ierra below MWSelle en
tirely Iree from over-flffw, and will
make Ihe Red, Bayou Disrrjct of
this parish, lire garden spot of the
Stste. This scheme will not cost
-one thousand dollars, snd besides it
will make such a current down
Tones Bayou, as to force the gov
ernment to icinove theraltin that

below the skirts of an old black
clerical coat, large enough to have
been worn by a fat clergyman of
Ihe established church of England.
His shrunken shanks were enclosed
in scarlet stockings, and he wore

hobbled along he stretched his thin

The following little anecdote of a
local nature we find in ihe bavan-
mh correspondence of the Wall
Street ?N. Y.) News:
At Charleston I met a men from
Binghanipten, N. Y,, who was
agent for some sort ot cotton ran
chinerv, and almost the first thing
he asked me was:
"How do you manage with the
hotel waiters?”
"YVhy I have to fee them,' of
course,"
“That shows how green you are,
1 am going to stop here four days,
and I won’t pay 'em#cent.”
“Then you won’t get much ser-
eh! Well, you just,
watch me and learn s thing or two.
See that?’’
It was s lead half-dollar, neatly
coveted with gold foil, and at' first
glance it seemed to be s twenty dol
lar piece. When the New York
er’s trunk came up staira and the
two darkeys lingered around for a
quarter apiece that “twenty” ap
peared to view and he said:
“Smallest I’ve got to-day. I’ll
aee you before I go.”
The tame thing was worked on
the table waiter, on the waiter
who brought up ice water, and
on several other colored indi
viduals, and when we were all
ready to take the tram for Savan
nah tha trunks went down on the
wagon and we walked to the de
pot. Two minutes before the train
pulled out the New Yorker turned
to the African with his gripsack
and said:
“James, will you take this coin
and square up all?"
“Yes, sah.
“Place it carefully in your pocket,
and don’t lose it.”
“She’s dar, aah; an’ Ize millyuna
o’ times blecdgrd to you."
“Never mind that. Well,
are off.”
All the way down to Savannah
that evening my companion
chuckled over his keenness in
heating the colored population, but
when we reached the latter city his
chin took a drop. We were not
clear of the depot whew he was ar
rested for passing counterfeit
money, and all his explanations
did not prevent his return to Char,
lesion by next train. I met him
afterwnrd in Alabama and he told
me the affair cost him $65.

CONFEDERATE GOLD.
*20.000 raaos Emms In WUkaa County.
A gentleman just returned from
-Wilkes county informs us that there
is considernn's excite,nent, io\that
count-over the finding * large
amount ot gold, buried near Wash
ington, on (be farm of M‘. Che-
nault.
Some time ago an old'negro died
on the place and informed Dr. Wal
ton that there was a large amount
of Confederate gold buried on the
place, but failed to tell the spot
where it was buried. The parties
who found the gold are not known,
although several persons have lett
the county, no doubt thinking they
would bif arrested end made to give
up whet they had found. The hole
where the box came from looks
something like a grave, and ie three
feet long and four feet wide. Two
oak rails had been placed on each
side of the box, which had rotted,
showing that the box bod been
buried a tong time. The people in
Wilkes county are certain that the
gold has been found, and from the
size of the hole there must have
been between twenty and twenty-
five thousand dollars ir. the box.
It will be remembered that the
Confederate treasury wagons, laden
with gold belonging to the Rich
mond banks, were overtaken snd
robbed in Wilkes county, by dis
banded Confederate troops, as there
was no chance to keep these funds
from the hands of the Federals.
Each soldier filled hit hsvertack
snd pocheta with specie, taking
array all he could carry, and it is
reported that thousands of dollars
were buried by the raiders or
thrown into an adjacent creek. This
stream, a few years ago, was drain
ed by the farmer through whose
lands it ran, with a hope of finding
some of the hidden treasure, but

The ground around the scene of

There is no doubt about the soldiers

are several men now living in conn

not a shadow of doubt about a
pocket of gold being strnck this
time,ynd it will doubtless give're-

upon the engineer. Added to the
responsibility of their station, engi

This rivalry, it is said, sometimes
prompts tothe doing of utterly mean
