*60,000 tor a Drink.
From the Philadelphia Press,
John Bauer, a saloon keeper on
Delaware avenue, below Chestnut
street, has been presented with $60,
ooo by a young Englishman whom
he befriended some years ago.
Bauer’s story is to the effect that
while he was a bartender in Fitzpat.
rick’s saloon, on Delaware avenue,
above Walnut street, -several years
ago, a sailor came in and esked for
a drink, saying he had no money.
Bauer gave him a drink and be
friended him in Other ways. The
sailor said his relatives in England
were wealthy, but through drink he
had been cut off by them. He dis
appeared in a lew days, and Bauer
says he heard nothing of his where
abouts until a few days ago, when
he received a letter from-New York,
saying the man he had befriended
had presented him with $60,000.
The letter explained that the sailor’s
father had died and left all his prop,
erty to his son. Bauer said Iasi
night he would go to New York on
Tuesday to get the money.

A beautiful blonde of twenty
three years, living near Tremont
street and Shawmut avenue, and
who has twice crossed the continent
and spent a year or more in the cap
ital ol China, has been the object of
adoration on the part of a number
of Ilarvaid students, .who are the
sons of wealthy parents. Among
her most ardent admirers was a
youth of about twenty years, named
Albert Cheney, the son of a wealthy
New England farmer. Upon her
he has lavished considerable money
nd he fell secure in possessing the
entire affections of the young lady,
until he discovered her in the em
braces of another student, Harry
Quinby, the son of a wealthy cattle
ranch proprietor in the Lone Star
State. Cheney insisted that Quin
by should explain his conduct and
apologize. Quinby refused, and
yesterday afternoon' Cheney deter
mined that the former should ex
plain and apologize or fight. Quin
by agreed to fight, making a proviso
that in the event of his proving the
better man Cheney should give the
girl up, Quinby agreeing to do the
tame if he was whipped.
The men met this afternoou to
fight to finish with gloves in a room
at Cambridge. In the second round
Cheney punched the Tqxan in the
stomach, and in the fourth Cheney
was himself sent through the ropes
by a Texas upper-cut.
The sixth round was short, sharp
and decisive, Quinby chasing Che
ney all over the room, finally setting
him with two stinging right handers
on the nose that made the blood
flow freely down upon Cheney’s
face and breast. At this Cheney
threw off* his gloves and gave up
the fight and the girl.
