er»t tell* ■ pleasant story of one Mr
Feet, who went bear hunting with
a mute. The bear took refuge in a
log. Mac bad been in similar cir
cunutancet before, and he knew
what to do. He intimated in pan
tomine to the dumb elan that he wa»
about to shoot down the lor and try
lo lilt Ihe bear. Hit cheerful com
panion received the suggestion in
silence, and stood awaiting develop,
menu. Mac seized his Winchester
’and without much ado fired into the
log. Ho bit the: bear. That waa
certain. For immediately there was
a terrible bowling, and crashing and
scratching, which-pleased Mac to
amazingly that he gave the deaf
mute such a slap ou the back that it
made him es nearly yell at a dumb
man could.
Gradually the noise subsided, the
boar became quiet, apd it was evident
to Peat that they were in the pret
ence of death. So he determined
to go down the log, and haul the
bear out He looked'atthe opening
in the cypress tree, end then at his
own broad shoulders and hurculean
frame. He perceived that he would
not get in there without difficulty.
■ In tact, be doubted his ability to Jo

Everything being arranged satis-
lacturily, Mac dropped on hit knees
and inserted bis head into a hollow
log. Then ha tbruat hit ahouldert

servicer of the mute were put into
operation. The mute was proud of
being assigned so important a part

Washington, Ian. 35.—The
committee of the houte on the ex
penditures of the department of jut-
lice will to-marrow introduce a res
olution calling upon the Secretary
of thS Treasury to furnish a complete
list of all unsettled balances in the
Treasury. This will reveal a very
curious state of things, and bring to
light a great many facta that have
titen entirely forgotten. The final
record of all settlements is kept in
Ihe register’s office. When Gen.
Rosecrana was about it to-day he
said:

fayette is our debtor to the sum of
400 odd dollars. The Chesapeake
sod Ohio Canal Company owes the
government, unless the bonka lie,
the sum of nearly a million dollars,
snd yet it is a historical fact that the
government took stock in that en
terprise to that amount. I myself
hail a case the other day or, my own
account. I found that I was repre
sented on the comptroller's books
as indebted to the government jn
Ihe sum of $1,400 on tny account as
minister toMexicoin tSyi. and prior
years; yet that account was fully
settled on an understanding had in
February 1871, on all the item*. At
that time I was requested to write
nut qll the items. 1 did so in tripli
cate, and the balance due me per
statement waa $1,954. A warrant
was immediately drawn for that
amount, signed, and delivered to me.
I had no more idea that that settle-
naent was not put on record tbyn
anything in the world, and ye! there
it all stood against me, and if I had
died meanwhile, who knows but it
might have been brought against
my estate! We began a search for
the original vouchers. You may
judge it was not an easy task after
fifteeu years had passed. At last
the vouchers were found. They had
been filed away by mistake with
some papers (hey did net belong
with at all. It was almost more work
than it was ell worth to track it te
the end.”
How does this come abonl?’’
was asked.
“In this way: The subject matter
may have been settled, but from
some informality tbe final record of
that settlement has not made its way
through the accounting officers end
got down to the register’s office.”
“What should be tbe remedy for
this!” .
“In the first place the accounting
officers of the treasury ahould be
uaified and made to work together,
and, second, there should be pub
lished annually a list of all the bal
ances. This would prevent a great
deal ot trouble, and give notice to
all persons who have business with

stand on the hooka of the treasury.
It would serve as a notice to tboae
who have made settlement with the
government, but have no knowledgo
whether their accounts ere doled,
and to bondsman of officials, and to
government debtors. Accounts
could in this way bo finally closed,
instead of standing for an indefinite
period, n* they now do.”
“1 know mother instance,” Gen.
Rosecrint continued, “where great
trouble might bevc occurred in caae
