. Say* the Savannah New*: It
well known that for leveral year*
fudge Simmon*, of the Macon cir
cuit, ha* been an aspirant for the
governorship, and it ha* been gen
orally admitted -that he I* an able
and upright man, and would,
elected, fill the poiition with credit
to himself a* well a* with fidelity
the interest* of the state and people.
The Judge ba* recently been se
verely criticized by several influen
tiai Journal* in the state, for that
while occupying a position on the
bench he has been charged with
electioneering to secure the nomi
nation lor the governorship. His
oppoatni* say that he ba* changed
sittings with hi* brother judges of
the superior courts, so that he has
been able to ofiiciatr in every jud;
cisl circuit, if not in a large majori
ty of the dbunties in the state; and
they say he ba* done this for the
purpose of directly or indirectly
soliciting the support of the leading
politician* and citizens of the sec
tion* he has visited in his official
capacity. It ha* not been charged
that the Judge hat used any tpe
daily undignified or unfair means to
advance Ids political interests, but
the question ot ethics has been
squarely raised in his cate, and it is
to be seen how it will be met
It has been *saio that he expects
to resign early in the spring with
the intention of openly entering on
the canvass for the nomination. If
thjs is true, it is unfortunate that he
was not able to avoid having to
meet the present question. A can
didate is always |at a disadvantage
when he is thrown on the defensive,
unless be can demand and reasona
bly hope to secure a “vindication”
on some great personal or political
issue. There is much to lose on an
ethical question, and very little for
him to gain, no matter how ably he
meets it, or how many precedents
he may be able to quote.
Those who condemn Judge Sim
mons’ course from principle are un
doubtedly right, but the condemne
tion will not be as effective as it
would be had the practice ot using
one office a* a stepping stone to
another not been so common in
Georgia in the past. There is noth
ing peculiar about Judge Simmons’
case, except that it appear* that he
is to be made the victim of a reform
sentiment that ha* too long lain
dormant.
There is something akin to sanc
tity about the bench, and it is to be
regretted that it ba* to olten been
mixed up with the hutting* or eon
nected with underground political
wires. If a wholesome reform in
politico-judicial ethic* is to be inaug
urated by the sacrifice of so popular
and excellent a man at judge Sim
mons, the fact of it* being to con'
•piciously inaugurated may tend to
make it more lasting than it would
otherwise be.

A Delicate and Probably Bnoosssful Surgi
cal Operation In Cbloafo. *
Chicago, Feb. 16.—An operation
lerlorined stone of the South Side
lospiuls in this city is thus descri
bed by one ofthesttendingsurgeons:
The patient is a girl whose body is
covered with hair moles. One of
these began on her forehead, exten
ded do«n over her eyelids
and covered the bridge over her note
disfiguring the otherwise beautiful
face. The operation was for the
lurpose of removing this growth of
lair. The patient was placed under
the inflnence of an anmtbetic and the
snrgson made sn incision in the
skin, covering the forehead and the
cheek- bones on each tide and
and through! the outer skin of the
slid* ana upper part of the nose,
'hen he cut through the skin on each
e,leaving s pair of eyebrows. The
in was removed and small pieces
cut from the patient’s limbs and
transplanted over the forehead, nose
and eyelids. The child was so com-
pletely coveredwith moles that the
surgeon was obliged to make the
transplantation ■ ol several small
pieces of skin instead of one piece
“The forehead will be slightly
seated,*’ said the surgeon,“but it will
be a thousand, times more sightly
than If-it < was disfigured by that
mole.’’
The little patient did aot seem to
mind the operation, knd in half an
hour, after recovering from, the in
fluence of the anesthetic, was
sleeping soundly,
