BEYOND EARTHLY AID.
A Little CUM's Terri tils
Blfflfl Mtrtiffbl
Youngstown, Ohio, Feb. at.—
Fur two years a little daughter of a
poor blacksmith has suffered with
a terrible affliction, which can only
end in her death. The child, Hat
tie Stanley, is but eight years of
age. Her physicians pronounce it
a new case, and are utterly unable
to deal with it She ia slowly but
surely being transformed into a
mummy. In October, 1884, she
was attacked with inflammatory
rheumatism. This left the heart
weak, and the blood refused to cir
culate to her finger tips. A gan
grenous condition of these parts
followed. The- child complained
of an awful burning sensation in
the hands, as if her fingers had
been held over a brazier. For five
days she kept up a constant scream
ing and was only quietia oy large
doses of opium. The left toot was
next attacked, and maw she com-
lains of the right The fingers ot
oth hands are black and dry, and
precrumpled up under theknuckles.
On the back of the hand where the
dead flesh joins the living, the akin
is bright red and covered with fresh
scabs.
SLOWLY DYING.
One of the joints of the little fin
ger has dropped off, and the thumb
and forefinger of the hand have
dried together. Until within a few
days she could hold a light spoon
with the thumb and finger of the
left hand, but now this power has
left her, and the only use of her
hands is to raise a cup between the
fleshy parts ot her thumbs to her
lips. By reason of the confinement
the child’s body is greatly reduced.
Her face, though strong and blight,
is pinched and deformed by suffer
ing. Tlie neighbors believe she is
afflicted wilh leprosy, and they
avoid the house. The mother spoke
lovingly of her babe. Shehasnurs
ed her for over a year and cared for
her most tenderly. No wish of lit
tle Hattie that can be granted is
denied. Nothing but a mother’s
care could have prolonged the
child’s existence so long.
