Then old Phil Thompson laid himself out to mystify them and raise a doubt of the pritoner’a guilt, and he, too, finally began to appeal to their gallantry. In the midst of a glowing aeotence, however, he found the jury yawning, looking out of the window and wholly inallen- five. Breaking off hi* pathos, the old lawyer leaned back on a table a moment, eyed, the jury quiszically wilh a humorous twinkle in hia eye and said; “Look here, gentlemen, this steal ing waa done during the war, and you can’t do anything with a man foi that You,'Tom Mundy!” he continued, turning and pointing to the foremen of the jury, a strapping big Kentuckian; “don't yon remem ber that sheep you stole in Powell’s Valley? Belfast, Aug. 13.—The excite- merit occaaionea by the riot* baa been revived by the outrage com mitted by the Orangenjen of 'Queen's Island, upon a Catholic, named Johnson. The latter waa re turning to his home from work, when be wa* teized by Orangemen and given a coat of tar and feathers. The Catholics are very indignant at the outrage, and vow vengeance against the perpetrators. Five hun dred additional policemen arrived to-day. Since Saturday fifty seri ously wounded patients have been treated at the Royal ho-pittri; zoo more are cared lor at private sur geries. It is estimated that prob ably 300 other* have received wounds in the tibt* whose case* are not reported. AFTnnNOON.—No moie deaths have taken place among the per sona wounded in the recent riots. The military have control of the city, and their appearance haa in spired better leeiing generally. Rain continues to fall, keeping the streets clear of people. Tee authorities intend to order all taverns closed at 5 o'clock this evening, and keep them cloned till 10 o’clock Monday morning. The eity has been fairly quiet to day. London, Aug. 13—A dispatch from Leigh, Lancashire, states r terrible explosion occurred this morning in Woodened colliery st that place. One hundred und torty minors were below at the time and many were shockingly burned. Two corpses are already recover ed from the mine and it is thought many more will be found. A later dispatch says that forty miners perished bv the explosion. Atlanta, Aug. 14.—A. W. Turner left Atlanta this morning with Tobc Jackson and a man by the name of Handy f. r Senator Brown’s coal mines in Usd* county. Jackson goes to the mines to serve a term of seven yeate, and Handy fora term of twelve months.
