THE BANNER WATCHMAN, THE NEW YEAR. Eighteen Eighty-Scvon opened bright and beautiful. The old year went out in • dismal fog and gust of rnin. The new ' year bunt forth with sunlight, and the * winds had chased away every vestige of storm. Thera was never a clearer dis tinction between the old and the now, the dead and the living. The change is gloriously suggestive. May the coming year ho prosperous and happy! Looking back through the fogs and rains of 188G, there are lessons which are rateable, if not pleasant, to recall. Bebi. d thlso trtain of the past are wrecks w) ich it • lould profit us to consider. T) e xnlafor uncs of the past year will be more thin evils if they bare not enfo) ced less ms of wisdom and experience, and the triumphs have been dearly bought if they havo brought con fidence unmingled with discretion and unseasoned with thankfulness. • Te the people of Athens, the new year opens promisingly enough. Our tradu has been larger this year thin ever be fore. Our cotton receipts hato already equalled the entire figures of last year, and will easily run to 75,000 bales. Two new railroads are knocking at the door of our warehouses and stores, and before this year is over one of them will be completed and the other will be on its >— „rtr M *1*" c *ty. Industrially and com* mercially, Athena has every rea son to felicitate herself upon the work of the past year and the promise of the coming season. Her business la building up and and broaden ing; her banking facility will be increased efora another business year opens, and the new city government is an assurance that the municipal management and pub - U© policy will be all that good citizens e«a ask or interposing men may hope The farmer* of Northeast Georgia close bs year with a short crop, and in some sections, an unprofitable one. But the preparation for a large grain crop has been complete, and the signa of a good crop year are fair. Our observation in the counties of Clarke, Oconee,, Ogle thorpe snd Jackson counties is, that where energy ind economy combine and where an intelligent and diversified sys tem of planting ii followed, the farmer has no trouble An sustaining himself and saying np something from yey to year. • New Tear carries its lessons, brings its hopes and reara its resolutions. Life la a constant renewal of the physical structure and a perennial series of strag glers in the moral nature. A friend hands ua Tennyson's beautiful poem ► hich we publish here as embodying all the sentiment of the occasion. No sweeter songster ever bymmed the harmonies of the hour more happily. Ring out, wild belhs to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light; Th# year is dying in the night; Bing out, wild bells, and let them die. Ring ont the old, nng in the new; _ Ring, happy bells, across the snow; ^ The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. -Ring out'the grief, that taps the mind. For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and po ir; Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause. And ancient forms of party strife; Bing in ths nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring eat false pride in place and. blood, The civic alander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, . Ring b the common lore ef good. * Bing out eld shapes of foul disease, \ Bing out the narrowing lust of gold; - Ring out the thousand wars of old, King in the thousand years of peace. '17 Bing in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring nut the darkness of the land, Ring iu the Christ that Is te be. A GRACEFUL ACT. Athens, Ga., Jan. 1.—Editors Baxxbu* Watchman: I retd vour article ibis morning suggesting Mr. Henry W. Grady !o succeed Senator Brown, in ttte event that he resigns, snd 1 endorse every word Ihst you wrote. The edito rial was graceful, truthful and to the point. But 1 have a suggestion to make in this respect, that I believe will be heartily seconded all over Georgia. Sup* pose that Gov. Gordon should see fit to select for this high and honorable |>OKi- tion Major A. 0. Bacon, his distinguish **! opponent in the late race? There is not a man in Georgia more emirontly fit ted for the position than Major Bacon, or who would serve Georgia more grace fully and efficiently. And besides, such an act on the part of Gen. Gordon would be so grandly magnanimous, and in such perfect keeping with hi* gallant and chivalrous conduct in the late war, that not only Georgia, but the whole Union, would ring with applause. It would also fill every breach in tho democratic party of Oeorgia, and heal the wounds made in the late campaign. I believe that Gen. Gordon is one mail fully capa ble of such an exalted step. It would placo on his brow a fitting crown to his grand recerd, both in war and in peace. sMi A UoilDOX 1 MEW YEAR’S WISHES. BY MISS llARKUGAL. What shall l wish th. e? Treasures of earth? DeLaperriere, of Hoschton i performed a surgical operation upon a young son of Mr. Hailey Jefferson, which was neatly and skillfully done. He re moved a tumor from between the boy’s eyes which resembled an egg, and was composed of cheesuy matter enclosed in a shell. Tho entire matter wstf removed with hut little pain and no sorious re sults. A young man named John Garrett had been out hunting and had returned to tho store of Mr. John Darby, at Bethle hem, when his gun was accidentally dis charged, lending the tvholo load or shot through his left shoulder. The wound was of such a serious nature as to require amputation of the limb at tho shoulder. The shot passed on snd lodged in the timbers overhead, carrying with them particles of flesh and blood. The house of Emily Shields, colored, who lived on the premises of Mr. Robert White, was entirely consumed by fire about midnight when no one was near to give the alarm. All her effects, consist ing of bedding, clothing, etc., to the amount of over fifty dollars, were con sumed with tho house. Fortunately, •he and her children were away at the time. No occupant had been in the house for more than a week. The recent marriages in which our community Participated, were Mr. W. F. Jackson, of this place, to Mist Ola Thrasher of Oconee. Mr. John Miller to Miss Carrie Crow; Mr. Henry McElhan* non to Miss Carrie Awtry. While on a recent trip, Sheriff W. P. Cosby, of Lawrenceville, told of shear which had been seen frequently around there. On one occasion it had beer teen in the yard of a citizen living in the suburbs of the town. During the snow its tracks were seen by a negro whs did not make the fact known in time to track it to its hiding place. Had bruin codie over to Jug Tavern he would have •melt powder ere this.
