The best sentiment is that the portable
bar must go.
The jug-train is not mentioned in the
inter-State commerce bill.
It looks like the free pass would evap
orate with the April shower.

they are revealed.
The Atlanta Constitution is a mind
reader. It sees railroad scoops long be
fore the scoop scoops.
The question whether an express train
running into a prohibition town is a jug*
ger-naut has never been settled.
Since ihe government refused to open
the harbor of Savannah that city stands
in danger offieing a dry town.
(Ten. Alkxanukims having the Cen-
trul Railroad cars painted wine color.
Wo trust this will prevent further water

Editor Gantt has turned his horse
head to Carolina. He will soon ride over
the lino of the Georgia, Carolina and
Northern Railroad.
The young men of Athens should by
all means organize s military company.
Savannah, Atlanta, Augusta and Macon,
in the order named have excellent vol
unteer organizations, and there is no
reason why Athens should not furnish
the State with as fine a body of citizen
soldiers as any city in the South.
We have here a hundred or more
young men between eighteen and thirty
years of age, who only require some lit
tle persuasion to connect themselves
with a military organization. Such an i
organization properly officered will cer
tainly become a success. It is no ex
aggeration to say that everything depends
upon the commander. If he is magnetic
and full of fire and zeal, he will commu
nicate to each member of his corps some
of that zest and love that are sure to carry
the company onward and forward.
The Savannah volunteer organizations
are magnificently officered, and much of
the success of Atlanta’s crack corps, the
Guard and the Horse Guards^ is due to
the personal magnetism of Captain Burke
and Captain Milledge, who have inspired
each soldier wit ha real soldier's love for
his command.

VINDICATE THE LAW.
The Banneu-Watchman believes that
the policy of the Mayor in fining parties
who make a practice of bringing liquor
to town was wise. We must commend
tho course of the City Attorney to this
extent in advising the Mayor. We do
not desire, as a public jonrnal, to preju
dice a case now in court, but as this
question has attracted public attention,
we must say, that in ouropinioo, the law
has been wisely and fearlessly vindi
cated.
The bringing of liquor to town from out
side sources has grown so frequent and
tiagrant as to havo drawn the law into
ridicule and.contempt. Wherever deal
ers or messengers have mado a Business
of this traffic, they should not be able to
evade the law. The prohibition law
should be enforced whether right or
wrong, and wo commend tho vigilance of
our police officers and the decision of the
tribunal which has considered the mat
ter. If prohibition is not the solution to
the liquor question it will soon be proven.
At all events, the law must be respected,
and mere who bring liquor to town and
sell it, whether dealer, distiller or jug-
broker, must expect full penalties for
every violation.
We do not regard with favor the at-
tenpt to jerrymander Mr. Randall out of
his district in Philadelphia any more
than tho effort to sell Mr. Carlisle out of
his place in Kentucky last year. Ran
dall is an able and a pure man, if a nar
row and selfish statesman. We trust he
will get back to Congress, all the same.
Besides the United States there is no
nation in the world which has a revenue
of $8,000,000 a month in excess of the
government. The United States also,
says the Columbus Enquirer, has the
unique distinction of being the only gov
ernment in the world that has a national
legislature unequal to the task of stop
ping this unnecessary drain upon the
people’s pocket.
Tiffany, the great New York jeweller
has a wayward son who has brought sor
row upon his father by marrying a wo.
man with a questionable reputation. The
young man has endeavored to smooth
over the stained family relations by
leaving his wife and going to Europe.
Miss Nina Van Zandt is not mtrried,
yet, and is not likely to be. The county
clerk has returned the alleged marriage
cetriticate to the justice who claimed to
have performed the ceremony. The jus
tice is reminded that as Spies is in jail
and w as at the tune of the alleged mar
riage, he could not have been at Jefferson
where the ceremony is said to have been
performed. Alas! poor woman, mis
guided still!
The expression of opinion upon the
prohibition question by our mercantile
population yesterday was full, candid,
and pointed. It settles a vexed and long
disputed question, and shows the world
whatever effect prohibition has had upon
other matters in Athens, it has not affect
ed the large and constantly increasing
trade of the metropolis of North-East
Georgia.
The O’Connor Tragedy Company have

“A young friend of mine was cured of
an insatiable thirst for liquor that hod so
prostrated his system that he was unable

that burning thirst; took away the appe
tite for liquor; made his nerves steady;
and he has renamed a steady and sober
