gun shot Mr. Henley’s little boy and his
dog.. Mr. H., who was some distance
from home when the news reached him,
went at once in pursuit, but failed to cap
ture the man who did the shooting, or to
learn his name. The most that was
found out about him was that he was
driving a bay horse and had the gun in
the buggy. Mr. Henley is outraged, and
is still in pursuit of the shootist. The
child will probably recover. The partic

Profession In the Classic City.
A gentleman’s cook in this city has a
sick uncle who has been down for three
or four weeks, attended by Dr. Lyndon
and dne other physician. He complained
of pain iu his hips and suffered consider
ably. On the lot was-'a negro man clean
ing up the yard, and in turning up traah
found a rag tied up with a string. He st
orce went to the sick man and said,
“Here; I;se found the thing what done
the mischief.” At once other negroes
gathered around to look, no one daring
to touch it, except one brighter than the
others, who picked it up snd proceeded
to investigate, all the" others drawing
back and calling loudly for her to drop
it or she would be a ruined gal, unless
she took it to running water and threw
the rag in and wash her hinds with pep
per and salt They then determined to
send for a voudoo doctor, who in time
arrived, very dirty snd ragged. He at
once called for boiling water, dipped bis
hands in and rubbed it OTer the pain;
then proceeded to annoint himself with
some very dirty, rancid oil. He next
called for s fire or ten dollar gold piece.
The sick man said he had no lucre. The
doctor said he could do nothing without it.
The wife and friend3 after so long a time
succeeded in finding a five dollar gold
piece. He examined the piece closely,
snd proceeded to put it in his pocket—
he all the while shuffling the cards and
muttering to himself. After a while the
cards were thrown violently to the floor
and stamped them with both feet. He
then V} down with his head between his
knees for some time, seemingly in deep
meditation or prayer. All of the above
was gone through with rapidity. Then
calling the wife, he asked her if she
wanted her husband restored; if so he
said for $14 he would have him out in a
day or two. The trade was made at
once. He then directed her to go to the
woods and procure certain barks, place
them in a black bottle; place the bottle
in a pot of boiling water—the medicine
was then ready for use. He then told
tho woman to give his medicine just as
Dr. Lyndon had prescribed his, and to
throw one dose of the Doctor’s medicine
out each time that his was given. It was
further agreed that his name should not
be mentioned by any one while the med-
icine was being used. The negro is still
sick, but following the a directions of the
veudoo.
ATHENS MUST HAVE IT.
A Chance farlTe to Capture a $2.1,000
Oil ITlill and Refinery.
As is well known, there is a new cotton
seed oil company formed, backed by
abundant capital, and whose mission it
is to establish opposition mills at various
points in the South. They will uso im
proved machinery, pay planters fuR val
ue for their seed, and in fact, begin
war on a monopoly formed to kill out op
position and control this entire business
in the South. A prominent gentleman of
this city tells us that the committee hav
ing the location of these mills have been
inquiring about Athens, as a suitable site
for one of them, and that he believes, by
a proper effort, our city could cap
ture the enterprise. It is proposed to
erect an oil mill and refinery that will
cost $125,(XX), which will add not only to
the revenue, but the population of our
city. There is no better point in Georgia
for such a mill than Athens, for we are
in the heart of the cotton belt, and an
unlimited quantity of seed could be pro
cured right at our doors. We trust that
Mayor Hodgson will look into this mat
ter and at once open a correspondence
with the proper parties. With the right
sort of exertion we believe that Athens
can capture one of these mills, and it
will not only be of inestimable boneflt to
our city itself, but to the farmers of Mid
dle and Northeast Georgia.
A WONDERFUL PHENOMENON.
At Mill Grove, IncL. Uvea John Bnfcer,
the '‘Walking Man.” In 1884 be felt muscu
lar and nervous exhaustion, a strange rest
lessness, gene*—! uneasiness, snd toe only
relief he could get was by constant walking.
For twenty-eight months be has tramped in
a circle around and around bis bouse, rest
ing only four hours each day, and it is esti
mated be has covered more space than tho
circumference of the globe. He has at
tracted universal attention, been visited
by hundreds of curiosity seekers, and
has really become a public character. His
nervousness has shown itself in walking;
other people’s nervousness acts in other
ways. Sometimes the ;terton is rest
less, trembles, has nervous head
aches, a sinking at the pit of the stomach,
a loss of appetite, inability to sloop, fore
bodings. and general exhaustion. At othef
times irritability, ptwishness and fault
finding are felt ar.'. life is a fearful
trial. When these things come on some
thing must be done, or this nervousness
will lead to insomnia, insanity, or death.
Many people take morphine, opium, or nar
cotics; but they only deaden the nerves for
the time being What people need is to as-
sit Nature a little, and Nature itself will
restore the nerve-tissue and bring health
and strength. The best researches of
modern scientists have proven that there
is nothing for this purpose equal to puro
spirits, and no spirits so reliable and valu
able as Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey. An
authority on this subject, being no less than
the well-known Dr. Caldwell, who treats
only nervous diseases, says:
In typhoid and nervous' exhaustion I know of
no remedy to approach or equol Duffy's Pure
Malt Whiskey to bridge over a o isis or mend
the broken cup of health in an emergency ol
immediate danger. This may bo said or alcohol
in general, were it not the fact timt many of out
whiskies are so sophisticated. T no >e impui itiet
are in the Duffy'B Pure Malt Whiskey entirely
absent, thus affording a puro and safe stimulant,
a true tonic.
JOHN D. CALDWELL, M. D., Neurologist.
CO N. Charles st., Baltimore, Md.
All people have nervous exhaustion at
times, but only those who .arc careless per
mit it to continue. When it does continue
it runs into the worst known troubles,
which make iifo a burden and death a re
lief. People who allow this are alone to
blame, for it is comparatively easy to over
come, and can be absolutely controlled. By
tho uso of the pure stimulant (but not in
toxicant) above named, these fearful things
may be avoided, and health and happiness
succeed to sickness and misery.
