THE BRUNSWICK ADVERTISER, APRIL 14, 1875. T. G. Stacy, Editor and Proprietor Subscription Price: $1 per Annum in Advance WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 1875. THAT BONDED DEBT. From a recent report of our Finance Committee, it appears tliat in addition to current expenses for the present fis cal year a debt of $42,676 must be met in some way. The other being Bonds and Coupons. The Committee re commended two plans of adjustment for their claims: one by issuing new bonds in place of old ones, giving, however, in exchange, probably not. more than half the number, The oth er, by giving up real estate—lands, to Mie full amount of their claims in liquidation of the same. We think the first proposition a dangerous one; it savors ton much of repudiation—an act calculated to kill out any place and people. The second proposition, how ever, meets our hearty approval. We look upon it as the only safe way out of our dilemma, and one that will be of mutual benefit. Oar city never can grow until we are rid of this debt. Numbers of men have come here and gone away feeling that this was not the place to plant their money. • So it will be till this dark cloud of Bonds aud Coupons shall be driven away and the glorious sun-light of ‘‘freedom from debt" shall shine in upon us. So long as the city continues to own this property, and with it this debt, just so long she will remain in the dust. On the contrary, let the bondholders make the proposed exohange, thus re lieving.the city of this burden, and soon we shall see a change here that will astonish all. The very property now on the market for exohange will then command many times its present value. Viewing the matter in this light,, we would urge our citizens to authorizedhe Council to make the ex- ? change, and would recommend to the bondholders their speedy acceptance Advertisements F. A.
