When completed, Mr. Fliut’s new furniture establishment will be one of Ihe neatest buildiugs ou Newcastle street. The work is being woll done. Oui policemen were kept busy on the ui ji niug of the fire. Between free whiskey and the inordinate desire of some lulus to pilfer, arrests wore nu merous. Sc-., card of Harris k Smith, attor neys i t law, in this issue. Whilst the combination is a new one, the names are familiar to our people. We com mon ' the n.-w firm to your patronage. The entertainment by Ronde, the humorist, did not eoino off on Wed- uesduv night last, as billed, owing to the inclemency of the weather. He promises to be back in about two weeks. Pinafore will grace our boards ou tbo 1st and 2d of February. Reserved Boats are already spoken for. The now "stars'’ that have been added are par Ju•reliance, nud the public may well expect a fine rendition. Hurrah for tIre ".Seasidei.!" But for them onr whole town might have been in ashes instead of only one block. Our colored tirumuu certainly did yeomau service and deserve the Ihanki of the whole community Scarcely had our firemen gotten over the fatignp of the big fire yester day morning before the lu ll began to ling again, ilml tbu “Seasides” were soon s -on hurrying for the scene. The fire, however, was extinguished before thin reached it, and only resulted in burning up some clothing, etc., in the house of Toney Swectwiny. The ori gin of the fire is a mystery. The Park Association having signi- ' lied their readiuess to begiu work ou Hanover square, the City Fathers Lave ordered the City Hall removed at once to the vicinity of the Court House. Wo trust ere long to see this naturally beautiful spot so im proved ns to be au oruameut to our growing little city. On Thursday night, as Messrs. Scruggs and others wero out opossum huutmg on the “point" a huge rattle snake bit his favorite dog Frank, from the effects of which he died. The party went yesterday morning to the tame place, and unearthed and killed the monster, which measured nearly s.xitvi and bud ihirteen rattles and 11.' -i- til button Mr. J. M. D.-xter requests iin In than!. n>r him lie kind friends wiio, on the occasion the fire, and in his absence, saved bis books and other valuables from hi* office. 41c also re quests ns to st iti that two books arc missi-ig, and if ti.cy were s.n, b ami j ABIOCONF^^ 044,000In Ashes. We have had another conflagration, Mi* time sweeping the entire Uqgk occupied by Messrs. Michelson A Bro., H. L. Harris, E. Eanl and J. Lissner. The fire was discovered by policeman Moore between three and four o'clock yesterday morning, and the alarm soanded. Afterdome delay the Oceanics took position at tbe np- por tank on Newcastle street, and, having- steamed np, undertook to throw a stream on the banting build ings, bat, for some reason unknown to the writer, no stream came, and the buildings continued to barn. We have beard a score of reasous assigned fyitff the matter is to undergo inves tigation we forbear giving any of them. There is evidently something wrong somCVvbere, and unless a reme dy be found we might ns well have it understood that we have no steam firq engine. This is too important a matter to mince. Let the powers that be get at the bottom facts aud bring them out. This is tbe second time since wo have bad a steamer that the expectations of the people, whose money has been invested in said machine, have been disappointed. Engine No. 2, the old reliable, now in the bands of oar colored firemen, took position ns soon ns possible on Drury’s wharf, and, although unable to extinguish the flames, did valiant aarvicA in confining the fire to the burning block. They worked man fully. Below- we give an estimate of the losses in round numbers, which ureas follows: J. Michelson A Bro., two stores and Htock, $25,000; A. G. Os good, store, $2,500; H. L. Harris, stock, $4,000; J. Lissner, store and stock, $6,600; E. Kaul, $6,000; J. M. Dexter, C. P. Goodyear and W. E. Kay, offico furniture, books, etc., about $1,000; total, $44,000. Of this amount Messrs. Miohulsun & Bro. had $13,000 insurance on buildings and stock, A. G. Osgood $1,000 on building, H. L. Harris $1,000 on stock, E. Kaul $3,- 000 on stock, J. Lissner $1,000 on building, Messrs. Doxtor and oth ers probably $500, in all about $19,- 500. Of these figures $7,500 w as in companies represented by Mr. J. M. Dexter, viz: Fire Assurance of Phila delphia, -Manhattan, Columbus, of Mississippi, and Watertown, .-f Now York; $8,750 in e.niip- tires repi •■si utc.l by Mr. T. O’Connor, Jr., viz: Under writers, Liverpool and Li-n.imi and Globe, and British American, and the remainder by the London Assurance, C. H. Champion, of Savannah, agent. Of the goods embraced in t no above schedule of figures we would say that Michelson A Bro. hud saved a largo portion of their grocery stock and part of their dry goods; J. Lissner nbont Imlf of his, and Messrs. Harris and Kaul nothing at all—in fact Mr. Harris barely escaped with bis life.—• The fire having originated, as well as cau*he judged, between his store aud the dry goods store of Messrs. Mi- chelsou tk Bro., aud being a sound sleeper, could not be aroused until suffocated by the smoke. From the lateness of tbe hour aud tbo position of the firo when discov ered, the presumption is that it must have been the work of an incendiary, whether for gaiu or revenge we are unable to say. Thittl Caught. On Wednesday night last, a col ored fellow named Brown Falk stole a horse from McKinnon Bros., of Tar- boro, nud made way for Brunswick, reaching here Thursday noon. He was pursued by Mr. D. B. McKinuou aud traced to this place. Yesterday morning Falk pot in his appearance nt tile tire, was nb stifled and p- inted out to offirer ltainev, who gave eliase aud soon hud his man swimming out into Turtle: River for safe!\ hut l«*ing too 'iiuiil to strike out for die oppo site -bore, and beiug uuubli to touch bott -ui, he quietly gave himself up The articles written last fall upon this subject have attracted attention, and should lead to, prompt: action.— prdvement cing Old a convict There should be company started ' ei Town and Town Commons and Dix- villa and Dart's addition to tbe city of Brunswick. A company confining its operations to the sections of the city named would insure their continuous aud healthy growth, and would also stim ulate improvement of property by large laud owuers in other sections of the city. That this proposition is feasible, that the demand for houses warrants it and insures its business success, that it will add to the value of the company’s property and of all other property in these sections, that it will obviate n danger of removal of growth from these to other sections of the city and inure to the benefit, of every resident of these sections and every land owner, and also stimulate growth in other sections of tbe city, nud that it will pay baudBome dividends to stockholders, no one who -ill study tbo matter can doubt.
