local matters. g^egtionB Ab^tt Fire Popart mont Tbtf recent fire has taught ns los ing that we sbonULJieai, Prominent am0 ng these is, firs^hat weshould see to it that our steamer is ahoayx In readi- ness.and no mistake. Next, that it should bo oomeatable (if we may be allowed to coin a word) under all circum stances. To begin with, then, the en gine house should stand on the crest of Newcastle street, about the upper tana, so that it co$ld be easily tqkenf by band, if necessary, to any point along the business portion of said street, thus reaching, either the^pwfr tank, or the canal at tfai market*— Then by shelling Gloucester, Monk and Mansfield streets from Newcastle to the Bay, that point could be easily reached and water seonred. These streets should be shelled anyway, bo xre would be killing two birds with one stone in making these improve ments. • . i ’ f + i Another suggestion, which, by the way, comes from a member of Coun cil and not from us, but which we heartily endorse, is that the city pur chase two able-bodied horses, to be used for its own hauling during the day, and kept in a stable adjoining the engine house, and a special set of engine harness be secured and kept for that purpose, and so placed that it can be had on a moment's notice, and lastly, that the driver shall sleep at the engine house, where the fire bell should also be kept. Ajs a matter of course, horses and shelled streets cost money, and many, no doubt, will ob ject to the outlay, but it seems fool ish to us that a few hundred dollars should be refused while our town is lia bio at any moment to be reduced to ashes. The horses would nearly pay for themselves in three months in the saving of niro, for the city is compel led to have them for use by the street committee, and the advantage of hav ing them convenient cannot be calcu lated. It never pays to be "penny wise and pound foolish." One other suggestion: Investigate thoroughly the cause of the failure to work the steamer at our recent fire, and if the fanlt be that the LaFrauce lire ongino is a fraud, then send it back to Elrayra, pay no more on it, and publish to tho world that it is a fraud; and if tho fault be that the en gineer is incompetent, then get one that is; and if the fault be that we want organization, then let’s have it.— In purchasing this engine our people understood that our insurance was to bo less. Tho contrary is the easo, lor as soon ns throe of the companies do ing business boro hoard that we had a steam fire ongine they told their agent to raise on insurance. Besides this, some companies, we'understand, have withdrawn entirely from our town, on account of our poorly organ ized fire department Lot’s have something or nothing. Almost. Yes, almost a conflagration. Bpt for the promptness of policeman Moore, the Brunswick Braoket Works would havo been in ashes. It took flro last Thursday night from ttys heat, of furnaco resting on the floor, and by midnight bad eaten its way> ,to fresh nir and then burst forth in flames.— Officer Moore discovered itg|«)it. blazed and gavo the alarm. pondent “Yellow Jessamine," now a resident of New York city, and run the risk ol beinff censured for it: Heaf'Mr*iStaey: The past month has been anything but agreeably spent by the exiles from Georgia. Wehafe almost cougbi ourselves to death, I would ygg/ to shadows, but against the coughing must be ranged-the splendid, juicy steaks,, savory, ve^l: chops and i&flJ vegetables. New York is a great place for good living, I must say, and not much higher than in B. either. r It has been as cold as Danis's In- fere is represented to be, and how ' your poor Yellow Jessamine has had her bods of propuipe and blossoms of eloquence nipped and broaghl to an untimely end is past expressing.— Think of the windows being for two days so covered with frost, they.lqoked like ground'plass; and the boiling wa ter I was silly enough to try and make create me a "peep-hole” would con geal before I could dry off with a cloth after application. On Monday last every oneijl^Chav ing sore throats or colds; I volun tcorod to go to market, and came near being blown down two blocks past onr house; and the boy bringing home my orders had the bag literally blown off the cranberries, scattering <'tlem be low, while it (the paper bag) wentca- reoriug “up in a balloon, boys” fash ion, quite funny to see. I must anticipate an “idea” and tell you of the monster hog John and Or- lie saw at Washington market. It weighed dressed 1,260 pounds and hang over seven feet long, not includ ing “curled appendage. ” How do yon you think that is for a small pig ? Ooorm Lodge No. £14, F. A. M. A Few Remark* by “Trutliful James.” Don’t imagine that because a man has a gift of gab he is a born orator. When you find a quiet man don’t give him credit for wisdom. Some men don’t talk because they have noth ing to say. Silence is no more the sign of wisdom than pounding on an empty barrel is v a sign of war. If argument won’t bring a man over to yonr side of a question, knock ing him down won’t do any good. The man who can run a bill at the batcher’s ana dodge hint for six months is not necessarily a statesman. The man who takes up the most room on the sidewalk is not always of tho most consequence. A fifteon-oent drunkard wnnt’s more room now-a-day8 than a Judge of the Supreme Court. 1/to be coutmt Wo reproduce on this page the ad vertisemeD{ ?f the above institution and in doing so, heartily endofsh’ the fallowing from the Telegraph and Mes- K nger, concerning Mr. McKay and e institution: This is another one of Mboon’s new '0.
