The fire alarm last Friday night was occasioned bv the upsetting of a j ptit to work to clear away the wreck SMASH UP. One Man Killed and Two Wounded. On Tuesday lost, as Mr. James Whitlook, yard engineer of the E. T., V. & Q. Railroad, was transferring the engine Georgia, recently purchased by Mr. J. H. McCullough, of this city, from the E. T., V. & G. Railroad, from the “old depot” to Mr. McCul lough's dock, be met with on acci dent which cost bim bis life. He was on the engine A. H. Colquitt, with the Georgia coupled to it (both backing) having with bim Mr. St. Clair, the fireman, whilst tbe yard master was on tbe Georgia. Leaving tbe old de pot, be increased his speed, and, by tbo time be passed Mr. Risley’s place, was moving, from all accounts, about thirty or forty miles an boar. Just beyond this point, where the track be gins to curve, his engine left the rails, and, before he could either sbnt off steam, reverse his lever or put on air brakes, capsized and became a perfect wreck. Tho tender was thrown com pletely over and ends leversed, and tbe engine itself thrown across the track, barying the engineer under neath it Mr. St Clair held on until tbe engine capsized, and then escaped, be knows not how, somewhat braised and slightly scalded with steam. A negro boy who had been enjoying a free ride, was hurled into the air, and came down with a cut hand. The en gine Georgia stuck to the track os long as there was any track to stick to, and was finally stopped by running into tbe wrock of the Colquitt, and, strango to say, her only passenger, the yard mantur, was not scratched, although her tender was somewhat bunged up. What the engineer’s idea could have been for such reckless running, and that, too, over a place he know was not entirely safe for such speed, eunnot do divined. The fireman says he remonstrated with him, but to no avail. Wo visited the wrook as soon after the accident os we could, and witnessed a spectacle calculated to appall. There lay the pouderous eu- gine, torn into pieoes, her engineer crushed and then cooked, aud the track all torn and twisted. The body of tho engineer was taken out during the evuniug, put into a cof fin, and sunt on the night passenger to his wife and fatherless children in Macou. flic extension force were kerosene lamp by one of the inmates of tho jail. Among delightful entertainments at L’arioso we may truly class that given by the Ladies’ Aid Society of tbe Presbyterian cbnreb Thursday night last. It m not only pleasant but refined. Tbe parts were well sustained, and all are loud in praise. Tbe costumes were indeed ancient, bat, somehow, it doesn’t seem to as that either tbe singing or playing There was on that stage decidedly more cultivation in these branches than was, ip our judgment, in the days represented by those costumes. The singers, fourteen in number, sustained themselves most admirably. All will unite with ns, however, in pronouncing Mrs. C. the star of tbe evening. Every word she song was beard as distinctly in the back of the ball as on the stage. Mr. S., as Time- ist, won the admiration of all, both in costume and “beat.” He was proba bly tbe best representation of the ancients, unless it be the tall lady with tne big fan. The whole affair was hugely enjoyed, and reflected much credit on Mrs. D., under whose guidance it wus gotten up. Among the gentlemen singers Mr. H. T. D. seemed to be a special favorite, judg ing from tbe applause. We are pleased to state that tbe concert was a success financially as well as other wise. Willoughby Iteailo. This justly celebrated humorist will give one of bis choice entertainments of humorous and druiuutic recitations at L’arioso Hall ou Tuesday night noxt, February 28tb. Our exchanges all over the State speaR in highest en comiums of praise of his entertain ments. As a humorist he is jiar ex cellence, and meets with universal fa vor wherever he goes. Go early to Glover A Dnnn’s and secure good seats. From Washington. Mr. D. T. Dunn, of our city, writes us as follows from Washington: “ I bad tbe pleasnre of listening to Senator Brown’s speech ou the polyg amy question, and was impressed with his ability and earnestness. Both himself and Col. Bluuk have extended every courtesy to me, and I believe they are the right men in tbe right place, and I only wish they coaid be converted politically und become good solid Republicans. I have seen Pres ident Arthur and am satisfied that wo have u man at the helm of state who is disposed to do thoroughly right to all sections of this great republic. I shall be able to give yop tbe status of the quarantine aud appropriation matters connected with oqr port when I return,-as CoL Black bos promised to give me tbe desired information.— Georgia Republican politics is now the tueine of interest here, and none can tell just yet ‘which is how.’ Be tween Democrats and Republicans Georgia is constantly and coutiini- lly kept before the American vi.-i- . .— Washington is a gay city, and n uioc place to visit, but I would rather live in our own lovelv city of oaks amt ce dars by tho sea.” st. Simona Item*. Six vessels, mostly large ones, are now loading here. The Albany excursionists were en thusiastic in praise of the little ham let and surroundings. The big fat man of the party fell in love with a St. Simons maiden—almost. Mr. L. G. Mercer’s arm is improv ing from the effects of his recent lofty tumble. The St. Simons marine hospital, un der the able management of Dr. R. J. Massey, is proving a beneficial ad junct to shipping. Would it not bo well to extend its jurisdiction to a wider scope, and let it take in Darien, Fornuudina and St Marys ? Its doub- lo daily facilities to and from other points, renders the location admira bly adapted to the business. Card ot Thunks. Mr. Editor; It is pleasant to feel that wo have friends who remember ns in' affliction. I desire to return many thanks to those who have kind ly remembered me in my affliction— both those in tho city and my friends across the river. It has been unso licited by me, yet they have remem bered me. I do not know who many of the donors ore, yet God knowetb, and He has said, .“ Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of tbe least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Some have not let the “left haud know what the right hand doeth.” May God’s richest blessings rest on each one, shall ever be the prayer of their friend, Joseph W. Roman's. CUMBERLAND. New Projects on Foot. A new and entirely different pro gramme is now on foot for tbe devel opment of Cumberland as a watering (dace. The present plan of getting to tbe beach is to land at High Point, then go by whatever conveyance can be bad to Mr. Bunkley’s place (now Boss’) and then by tram-road one and one-half miles to the beach. The new plan is to build a tram-way di rect from High Point across the marsh to "Little Cumberland” beach one and one-third miles. “Little Cumberland is now owned by Messrs. Stafford and Blalock, aud kept by them for stoek. They have quite a herd of horses there now. They pro pose, if the tram-way plan is carried out, to pnt np houses, stables, eto., right on or near tbe beach and pnt a man there to gentle and break to har ness and saddle each of their stock as is advisable to be nsed by visitors to the beach. The plan is all feasible, and, withal, a marked improvement on tbe present arrangement. With these plans perfected, a new hotel and landing at High Point, or tbe present Hotel of Mr. Bonrbank enlarged, and then either an excursion steamer dai ly to that point from Brunswick, or tbe palace steamer mentioned in re cent articles to be put on by Mr. Wolffo in connection with his road, Cumberland would bloom ns the rose, and her hotel be crowded with visit ors. Just above Mr. Burbank’s present hotel, and, by tho way, just where the landing should be, is a most mugifi- cont location for a hotel. It is hign, try and healthy, with a perfect Eden of magnificent oaks. Nature has done itB fall work iu making the spot just whut it should be to render it a desir able location for a watering place ho tel. We commend this project to both of onr railway systems, for it needs their co-operation to make it tbe grand success it should bo. Tbo parties at interest on the island will do all they can to farther the scheme. With proper facilities, hundreds who Oow go to Tybee, and hundreds more who go nowhere, would annually dock to Cumberland as a watering place. Whale Captured. The whaling schooner Golden City, Captain Authony, captured this week seventy-barrel whale, just ontsido our harbor. This will certainly prove a lucky “ find ” Let us figure a little on his value: Seventy barrels, about 2,130 gallons of oil—value about $2, 600. How is this for one day’s sport ? We understand that quite a shoal of them- monsters were playing about the outer buoy this week. Oue of our pilot boats sailed all among them and watched their capers. They were having a good time generally, and did some loud bellowing. , Oar Albany Visitors. The following party of sixteen la dies and gentlemen of Albany, Go., viz: Misses Stella Wight, Bessie Wil lingham, Paul Tarver, Page Jones, Mamie Tarver, Messrs. Geo. Collier, Willie Cutliff, G. C. Rust, J. D. Wes ton, A. W. Tucker, T. Calloway, J. R. Forrester, W. D. Mann, H. H. Tift and S. Brown, chaperoned by Mrs. Troup Butler, arrived in onr city on Tuesday night last, on a pleasnre trip, and stopped at the Nelson Honse.— They came for pleasure and we shonld think they foond it. They visited ev ery place of interest around town, went down to see tbe whale, and wonnd np their visit with a trip to St Simons Mills. It was the writer’s good lack to accompany them on this latter trip and show them around at the Mills. The party left for home yesterday morning, perfectly in love with Brunswick and all they saw. Es pecially was this true of St. Simons. We don’t remember ever to have met a pleasanter and more genteel party than were onr Albany visitors. Hope they will come again—they will al ways bo welcome. Among tbe brands of flour now sold by our enterprising merchant, A. F. Franklin, are tbreo that are cortuinly home-like: “Rosa Lee,” “Our Min nie,” nud “Our Harry,” named in honor of three bright gems of his own household. His choicest brand, how ever, is in honor of somebody’s else daughter. It is called the “Brunswick Belle,” and, wo guess, was so named by his clerk iu honor of his sweet heart. Ton see Cates was too mod est to call the girl’s name right out loud, but we understand. [ConuuontcAted.1 We don’t like to pay for water, but we cheerfully put up for whiskey.
