Dzab Madam: In response to yoar
wish, I have much pleasure in ei
ing fee interest which I feel inyi
posed investigation on fee mental and
bodily development of infants. Very
little is at present accurately known on
this subject, and I believe feat isolated
observation will add but little to our
knowledge | . wlipreos tabulated .results
from a very largo number iof observa
tions, systematically made, would prob
ably throw much light on fee sequence
and period of development of fee several
faculties.
This knowledge would probably give a
foundation for some improvement in
on? education of V
ought to be followed in all
I will venture to specify a few points
of inquiry which, as it seems to me, pos
sess some scientific interest For in
stance, does fee education of fee parents
influence fee mental powers of their

her forces is yet a matter of inveetiga-
Probably feero are several foroes
listing. The elasticity of feo arteries
reases their carrying capacity. They
, gnu, elastic tubes, which expand
ider pressure from eaoh hoart-oootroo-
fcn, and then by their own elasticity
©tract and help fee onward flow of
blood. In the smaller arteries the
. Joses the intermittent character it
gsessea in the larger arteries, and bo-
, mee a steady stream. The elasticity
the arteries serves precisely fee same
irpcfifi as the ai/«fcnber ot any f<*Se-
nnp, that of equalising the ted
icreasing fee amount delivered. The
hole force is derived from the heart;
;e arteries cause fee foroe to act ooa-
auonsly.
The veins are lax tabes, somowhat
ugcr than fee arteries, and oapable of
ulding aU fee blood of the body. They ohijdren at aq* age, either at a very
.nvey tto some amount of blood as fee eeriy or somewhat ' ' ' *
itter, but more slowly. In fee larger
eins, however, near fee auricles, the
elocity may bo 200 millimeters per soo-
nd. They aro provided wife valves
■hich effectually prevent fee blood from
owing backward from fee heart,
jip compression, produced by muscular
ontraction or otherwise, will therefore
ssint the forward flow of venous blood,
ad this is one explanation why exercise
astens the circulation. The movement
f the chest in breathing probnbly aids
lit pulmonary circulation, feo blood, as
ell as the atmosphere, tending to fill
ii> vacuum during inspiration.
Physical capillary force is not ro-
nrded os on aotivo force in the circula-
ion; but there is an admitted force in
le capillaries, resulting from the at-
rnction of the tissues for feo arterial
Iixxl, containing the required oxygon
id nutriment, “ The vital condition
[ the tissues becomes a factor in feu
maintenance of the circulation.” It is
Ins force, primarily, which adapts the
mount of blood to fee varying needs of
ay organ; the nervous system rogu-
ites the supply by varying fee ooliber
f the vessels.
'Die force in the capillaries, or some
ther force, carries the blood after death
rom the arteries, where the heart leaves
:, into the veins. Finding the arteries
mpty niter death gave rise to the idea
hat they convoyed only air, whence fee
amc. It was this belief which Harvey

t attained in this direction, however,
has been announced by l’rof. V, Galtier,
jf the Lyons Veterinary School. Tliis
inquirer has found, in tlio first place, i pertiuit with resi
more-advanoed stage?
This could, perhaps, be learned by
sohoolmnstera or mistresses, if a large
number of children were first olassed
according Jo age and their mental attain
ments, and afterward in accordance wife
fee eduoation of their parents, as far as
this oould be discovered.
As observation is one of the,
faculties developed in young
ondiut tliis power would probably be ex
ercised in on equal degreo by tlio chil
dren of educated and uneducated persons,
it scorns not impeesiblo that any trans
mitted effect from education could be
displayed only at a somewhat .advanced
age. It would bs desirable to test sta
tistically in a similar manner the truth
of feo often-repeated statement that
colored children at first learn as quickly
as white ^children, but that they after
ward fall off in progress. If it could be
proved feat education acts not only on
tho individual, but by transmission on
fee race, tliis would bo a great oncour-
agomeut to all working on this all-im
portant subject
It is well known that children some
times exhibit at n very early age strong
iqiociiil tastes, for whioh no cause can
be assigned, although occasionally they
mny l>e accounted for by reversion to
tho tasto or occupation of some progen
itor ; and it would lie interesting to
learn how far such early tastes are per
sistent and influence the future oarocr
of the individual. In some instances
such tastes die away without apparently
leaving any after effect; but it would be
di>sirable to know how tar this is com
monly the case, as we should then know
whether it were important to direct, ns
far us this is possible, the early tastes of
our children. It mny !>■• more beneficial
that a child should follow energetically
sonic pursuit, of however trilling a na
ture, and thus acquire perseverance,
than tliat lie should he turned from
