Soon ITIaled. Berth Georgia Ci« ran. In Honston, G.t., not long «g‘>. company of young folks met to enjoy a game of whist. There was occasion for one of the young women to re mark tkrt she would never marry a man so like Oscar Wilde that he should fall to the esthetic depth of wearing his hair a la horse-tail. Her interlocutor bantered the fair Geor gian to marry him, and os much to his surprise as to that of the compa ny, she accepted the offer. The par ty of the first part was rather elated than crestfallen, however, because the party of the second part happened to be as wise as she was witty and as rich in parse as she was rare in per sonal attractions. Cards were aban doned, a courier was seut with qnick heels for a marriage license, a jadgo was summoned as witness, a clergy man was hauled from his study, and with a quickness that almost took away the bride’s breath, she found herself a wife. As the betrothal took place at ten and the marriage at eleven, one hour only was consumed. In this romantic way Miss May- belle Clark, daughter of Judge Clark, of Americas, was wodded to Henry L. Sandlin, a worthy and well-to-do merchant of Houston county. Damon and Ffthlu Outdone. New York Hou . Who can say that tho story of Da mon and Pythias is a myth, after reading what occurred in tho women’s deportment of tho Tombs last week ? Upon the death of Matron Foster, af- tbirty-six years of service, it became tho duty of tho Police Justices to con sider which of hor two assistants should fill tho vacant position. They decided upon Miss French, but that lady declined, uud insisted that her rssociate, Miss Adamson, should bo the now Matron. Thereupon an un precedented sccno occurred. Tho two women, with toars and supplica tions, apponlcd to tho Magistrates to givo tho better position to her friend, and not to licrsolf. Tho mattor was finally compromised by Miss Adam son accepting Uio post of Matron, with tho understanding that Miss French should receive an equal sala ry. Tho bordoued Police Magistrates were soon to wipo their oyos during tho goueroas contest between tho wo men, and probnbly nothing exactly like it has ever occurred in tho histO' ly of American official patronage.
