I labors here last Saturday night. Dur
ing the afternoon of Saturday the del
egates and others enjoyed u trip down
to St. Simons with Captain Dart, of
the Ruby, who had kindly offered to
give the “preachers” a free ride. The
trip to them was indeed enjoyable.—
They will ever remember Cupt. D.,
tbe sprightly Ruby, and their trip to
St. Simons. The mill they thought
simply huge iu all its proportions.
A stranger in our city this week
said to us, “ ‘The half has never been
told’—the natural beauty of your city
fur surpasses all I had ever heard of
it." This is the universal verdict of
all. Nature has certainly lavished
her gifts upon us. Later in conversa
tion he remarked, "I find, too, that
your stores all have a city air about
them—I have seen no dusty shelves
and fadod goods. Your town is cer
tainly on a boom.”
Lazarus Noble, a colored chap who
has boeu doing tbe repairing of the

habit of going oat of town n short
distance aud cuttiug the wire, thus
famishing himself a fat job at $2.00
per duy for self and for $2 a horse
(which be never hired), but be was
finally caught, and will soon be inter

Telephone RxcHnnce,
Mr. J. F. Reynolds, agent of the
American Bell Telephone Co., has
been in the eity the past few days,
working up »n exchange. At this
writing be has sufficient encourage
ment to believe that the requisite
number of subscribers (twenty-five)
can be obtained to insure the erection
of the lines. This will be a grand
stop forward iu the matter of prog
ress. Telephonic communication
through a city has proven to be al
most as much of a necessity us rail
roads between places.
The following firms have become
subscribers:

first brick building in Brunswick
One or two others have been com

bnve been abandoned for tbo time.—
From present indications, Messrs.
Moore A McCrary will have the hon
or of beiug the first to complete. The
buildiug is to bo 30x90 feet, and lo
cated at the north eud of the old ho
tel lot, and facing Newcastle street.—
It will be two stories high. Tbe low.
er floor is to be divided iuto two
apartmeuts, one 28x70, facing New
castle, and the other about 20x25, fac
ing Gloucester, which will be occu
pied by Mr. J. B. Wright. The up
per story will consist of a ball-way
aud eight rooms, tin»tuo front ones
being provided with folding doors, so
that the two can be thrown into one.
As to the architecture of the building,
we need only say that the plans of
the same aro from the hands of Mr.
Wm. II. Anderson, and therefore per
fect iu symmetry, The cost will be
between four and five thousand dol
lars.
Keep Cool.
See advertisement of ice by Mr.
Haywood. He has just received a
large cargo, so large that ho had to
build an additional room on to his ice
house to hold it. As soon as the
weather gets a little warmer, ho in

of ice on Bay, Newcastle and Union
streets. Parties living iu the mere
remote neighborhoods can secure dai
ly dclivei y of ice by forming clubs,
thereby making the demand sufficient
for the outlay of delivering. Isolated
families could Imrdlv expect Mr. Hay
wood to deliver ten cents worth of ice
per day, at a cost of more than that
amount in drayage.
