Three Days and Nights Without
Food, Water or Shelter.
On Sunday last Mr. Charles San-
dys, inspector at St. Simons Mills, in
company with Mrs. H. B. Gonld and
daughter, Miss May Gould, came to
Brunswick in a ship’s boat, propelled
by two colored oarsmen, to attend the
Easter service at St. Mark’s Episcopal
church. Arriving at Mr. Watkins’
landing, the party tamed over to the
oarsmen their overcoats .cloaks wraps,
etc.,with instructions to be ready to re
turn at 2 p. m. The party failed to
put in tbeir appearance at the hour
designated, but came at about 5 p. m.
and fouud the negroes not there and
tbeir bout left high and dry by the
tide.
Being informed by Mr. Watkins
tbnt their boat could not begotten off
before high water at midnight, they
returned to the hotel to wait. About
midnight they returned to their boat,
and, finding mo oarsmen, concluded
to go without them. Not being fa
miliar with the route, they mistook
tbeir way u d went up Cow-horn
creek to its head, and there got
aground at the highest stage of the
tide, aud there they were left in the
marsh, their friends in Brunswick
supposing they had reached home in
safety, aud their friends at the Mills
supposing they were still in Bruns-
wica, as one of the missing oarsmen
had gone to the Island on the early
morning trip of the Baby and stated
that the party bad remained in B. to
meet some friends who were expected
from Liberty county.
So matters stood ontil the owner
of the boat began to make inquiries,
mid after many messages, telegrams,
etc., to and fro, the facts became
known, both in Brunswick and at the
Mills. This was Wednesday noon.—
Boats at once set out from both
places, and the party was'found, high
and dry iri the marsh, as stated, hav
ing been frotii Sunday night to.Wed
nesday afternoon without food, water,
shelter or wraps. On Wednesday
morning a shower came up, and a lit
tle water was caught, which refreshed
them very much. They were taken
to the Island, much exhausted, and
Dr. Massey summoned. At this writ
ing they are improving!
Why the gentleman of the party
did not get his boat off at high water
Monday noon, or, failing iu this, did
not take the marsh back to*Bruns
wick for assistance, we hnvo not
lean led; nor how it was that he did
not notice, when he started up thnt
creek, that he was pulling against
tiih', and the creek getting narrower
all the time; nor why be should have
undertaken the trip at that hour,
when he was warned of the danger by
Mr. Watkins.
Why I'hiHtei'iint Hum Not Stand.
Mr t'dilor; lit your issue of the 1st
th-t I noticed the query, “wby is it
that plastering will not last as well
i*oa as in oldeu limes?” I e*ml.t give
you twenty reasons, but wiii state on
ly ** few of the most important. “In
ohleii times” all the large Umbers in
a house were hewed, arid it required
time to do it. It was sometimes years
before the carpenter commenced to
put the frame of a bouse together af
ter the lumber was gotten oat, and
it was certainly well seasoned. Then
again, they did not trust to ten-penny
nails to hold a building, bat every
thing was mortised and braced. The
laths of those days were split and well
seasoned before being pat on, and the
•plasterer was compelled to pnt on
three-coat work, for the laths were so
uneven thnt one cont of browning
could not be made even or straight.
By the time tbe plasterer got to work
iu the building (which is very near
tlie lust work in it) everything w» r
sensoned and settled—henct no
cracking.
Now, Mr. Editor, in these days of
railroads, saw mills and planing ma
chines, a bouse is bailt in a much less
time and a smaller cost to tbe owner
than in former days. In ten days
from the time tbe tree is eat at the
* it has been «$wed t£ nt on the
and tb
and studs together. And in a few
days, yes, very few days mote tbe
plasterer is patting on laths that, in
all probability, were sawed from trees
that were standing in tbeir native for
ests but three days before; and the
mason bas to step around lively if he
gets his 8x16 inch piers finished be
fore the plasterer commences to put
on bis mortar.
Now, Mr. Editor, this is no fancy
sketch, for you know there is a house
now standing in Brunswick, built last
May or June, that was bnilt in six
days.
These are a few of the many rea
sons why plastering will not lost as
well now ns in olden times.
Very respectfully,
Jack-daw.
