Atlanta, Georgia.” The harbor of
Atlanta, or,.in other words, the noble
Chattahoochee, needs improving up
at least 'kk- far ns Atlanta, but when
Mr. Hammond had the memorial
printed iii full in thc Record, the illu
sion was dispelled. It relates to the
harbor of Bruuswick. The city of
Atlanta officially nskH Congress to
carry on the work already pluuned
for the harbor of Brunswick. This
work is now suspended on account of
a want of funds. The words of the me
morial that follow constitute a com
prehensive argument in favor of such
an appropriation. The memorialists
say; “Connected as our city will be
by next July with this port through
the extension of tho Macon & Bruns
wick railroad, which at this point taps
roads reaching every section of our
common country, aud on the line of
the vast system of loads nearly ce
mented together by the Cole-Smi-v
syndicate, which offer a new avenue
of transportation for thevustand ever
increasing products for export from
the great west and north-west,through
a section free from iee and snow, the
harbor of Brunswick being the sontli-
Atlantic terminus of this system of
roads, ample for the transaction of a
vast commercial business, only iieeeds
the expenditure of a comparatively
small sum to m ike it all that can be
desired for the transaction of sneli
business. We nod the people we rep
resent are deeply interested in the
speedy completion of this work, and
earnestly urge our immediate repre
sentative in Congress and your hon
orable body to take early action and
grant an appropriation equal to the
necessity and ample to complete the
work.”
Congress cannot place $75,000
where it will do more good than at
Brunswick. Nature has done a great
deal for the harbor in question, and
the expenditure of a reasonable sum
oY the government would make it one
of the best in the world. And the
business that will soon seek our most
southerly harbor will fully justify an
expenditure much larger than Con
gress is asked to make. We are glad
that in the strife for appropriations
Brunswick is not likely to bo over
looked, and tho hope tile new appro
priation will bo large enough to carry
ou as rapidly as may ho practicable
tho plans that have already been ap
proved by the government engineers.
