pBOCEliDINGSOF COUNCIL. Adjourned Meeting, May 8th, 1881. Council met pursuant to adjourq- m cnt. Present, His Honor, M. J. Colson, Mayor, and Aldermen Harvey, Hardy, Littlefield, Cook and Spears. Absent, Aldermen Wilder, Doerfling- er and Con per. Called the appeal case of W. J. Williams, charged with firing a gun within the prescribed limits on the 27th day of April, 1882, and held guilty by His Honor, the Mayor, and ordered to pay a fine of five dollars, or labor on the public streets for a term of ten days, and, after hearing the evidence, the judgment of the court was, on motion of Aid. Spears, sustained. Called also the appeal case of W. J. Williams, charged with firing a pistol within the prescribed limits, on the 27th day of April, 1882, and held guilty by His Honor, the Mayor, and ordered to pay a fine of twenty dol lars or labor on the public streets for u term of thirty days, and, after hear ing the evidence, the judgment of the court was, on motion of Aid. Spears, received, and the committee discharged. “An ordinance to secure the clean liness and to promote and preserve the bealthfulness of the city of Bruns wick, prescribe penalties for ft viola tion of the same, and for other pur poses therein mentioned,” was then takeu up and read the first time, then taken up by unanimous consent, read a second time by sections, and unani mously passed. His Honor then appointed the Com mittee on Quarantine and Sanitation, iis follows: S. C. Littlefield, J. R. Cook, J. J. Spears. Oii motion of Aid. Littlefield, it was ordered that 1,000 copies of the ordinance regulating and controlling the sanitation of the city be printed for distribution. By Aid. Cook: Resolved, TbatCoun- sMOBDIMME, to mva.ro to pro? mote and preserve the Healthlnlnese of the City of Brunswick, prescribe penalties for a violation of the same, — ——tnrposes therein men- 'ayor qtftfaiMciluf the.City of Brunswick, in Council assembled, do hereby ordain, That from and after the first day of June, 1882, it shall n6t be lawful tor any person tobuilfi, have, keep or use any privy within the limits of said city, embraced as fol lows: Commencing at tbe western termination of Dartmouth street, and running east along said street to Cochran avenue, thence north along said avenue to Gloucester street, thence east along said street to Gor don street, thence north along said street to *‘J” street, thenee west along said street to Cochran avenue, thence north along said avenue to “L” street, thence west along said street to the river, and thence south along the riv er to tbe place of beginning, unless tbe same be constructed and used as follows: " 1. No privy shall be placed or re main within a less distance than three feet from tbe line of any street or al ley, or within the same distance from the boundary lino of bis or her lot. 2. No person sball build, have, keep or use any privy within tbe limits of tbe city having a pit or sink attached to the same, but nil privies shall be so constructed ns to have tbe seats at least two feet above the surface of the earth or floor, and sball be open in tbe rear, or so constructed ns to allow the free passage of movable boxes from the rear. 3. No person shall use any privy within the limits prescribed by this ordinance unless tbe same be provid ed with movable boxes for the remov al of all matter accumulating therein, and the boxes sball be removed, emp tied, cleansed and disinfected at least once every two weeks from the first day of June to tbe thirty-first day of October, nnd at least once per month from the first day of November to the 31st day of May of each and every year. 4. No person sball use any privy within the aforesaid prescribed limits without placing, from time to time, as often as may be required, a quantity of dry earth and sulphate of iron (copperas) in tbe movable boxes, and which sball be sufficient to absorb, neutralize nnd destroy all offensive odors arising therefrom, so that tbe contents of the same may be promptly nnd easily removed to snob points os may be selected for places of deposit. 5. Tbe removal of tbe contents of all privies shnll be at tbe expense of those using the privies, and tbe re moval of all garbage, tilth or other ■natter which shall have been declared injurious to tbe health of the city by file Board of Health shall be at tbe expense of the owners or occupants of tbe lots upon which tbe same shall have accumulated. ; 5 2.' And be it further ordained, to be held on the 10th inst., to elect u sanitary inspector, at a salary of $50 Council then took a recess until 8:30 i m. on Wednesday, the 10th inst. M. J. Sec. 7. And be it further ordained, That it shall be the duty of the May or to appoint a standing commitUee of three, to be known as the commit tee on quarantine and sanitation, and to whom sball be referred all matters touching tbe quarantine or sanitation of the city, and who shall take charge of all matters pertaining to either, par ticularly that of supervising the busi ness and duties of the Sanitary In spector, and wbo shall be authorized to contract with responsible parties for the removal of all matter from the limits prescribed in tbe first section of this ordinance, whenever tbe same can be done to the advantage aud ben efit of those Laving to make the re movals. Sec. 8. And be it further ordained, That it shall be the duty of the com mittee ou quarantine and sanitation to procure a sufficient number of box es for the removal of tbe contents of all privies within tbe aforesaid limits, which shall be furnished free of charge, but shall be kept in good or der and condition by those using them. Sec. 9. And be. it further ordained, That all persons using privies requir ing movable boxes, shall so construct, locate or arrange tbe same, so as to afford the Sanitary Inspector an easy and convenient entrance to the same, either from tbe rear or front of the premises, Sec. 10.
