Down In Florida.
The St. John’s River is a queer riv-
,. r says a Florida correspondent. It
3 bout 150 miles long, from four to
tru miles wide, and averages about a
f , 0 t il< ep. In the centre, of course,
be channel gets to be quite deep,
iometimes it has a depth of forty feet.
Its ciu-ent runs about a mile a day. I
presume it would take about 150 days
for a cork to float from the source of
he St. John’s to its mouth. It is salt
for fifty miles from its mouth, and
brackish for 100 miles. It is full of
-had, catfish, frogs, toads, eels, niiiga-
,irs, and cawl-fishes. I don’t know
f any fish or reptile that don’t live in
he St. John’s River.
“Call this a river ?’’ I said to an old
ligator killer who was fishidg for
atfisli off the pier at Palatka. “Why,
s a great bay. It’s no more a river
an Lake Erie is. Lake Erie runs
;ter than the St. John’s River.’,
“Thar you’s wrong agon, stranger.
She’s ueitber a river nor a bay; she’s
cow pasture. Don’t you see the
ws standing all over the river?"
That man was right. All the cows
Florida seemed to congregate in
rhe St. John's. There they stood in
the water nil day long, slashing the
musquit'WiP with their tails, while
their beads are under water outing
-i-.i.-'s. It is a strange thing, indeed,
; see droves of cattle feeding along a
-r with their beads under the wa
re They look like a lot of cattle

their horns and ears under when the
grass lays deep, and keep them under

Professor E. S. Morse, of the Essex
Institute, has devised an ingenious
arrangement for utilizing the heat in
dm sun’s rays in warming our houses.
His invention consists of a surface of
blackened slato under glass fbod to
the sunny side or sides of a bouse,
with vents in the wnlls so arranged
'hat the cold air of the room is lot out
•it the bottom of the slate, and forced
in again at the top by the ascending
heated column between the slate and
the uliiss. The outdoor air can be
.idimtled, also, if desirable. The tbiug
■s so simple and apparently self-evi-
■ buit that one only wonders that it
iiasn't always beou used. Its entire
; . nr 1 icalness is demonstrated in the
•lo tting of the professor’s study in his
cottage at Saloin. The valuo of the
improvement for daily warming build-
ngs like churches and school houses,
which, whon allowed to got cold be-
•wuuu using, consume immense quali
ties of heat before they are fairly
'.vanned again, is oyidont. Of course
some other means of boating must be
available when the sun does not shine.
Hut in the colder regions, say in the
tar Northwest, the sun sliines a great
er part of time, and hence the saving
"t artificial heat would be very large
;! rue sun heat could be “turned on”
tor eight or ten hours out of the
twenty-funr. •

What a world of misery is told in
the simple statement that a certain
curt near Lawrence, Kansas, was oc
cupied by a family, four in number, a
father, a mother, and two children.
The father was on bis way to jail, to
serve a sentence of two years for rob
bery, the children were going to a
pour-house and the mother to a lnna-
tio asylum. The poor creatures bad
been unfortunate. The drought last
summer ruined the father, who in his
desperation to keep life in bis family
committed robbery. He was arrested,
tried and sentenced. The tension on
the weakened frame of the poor moth
er bereft her of reason, and so it hap
pened that the same conveyance took
|be fiit h« r to prison, the mother to an
bwine asylum, and the children to an
iihns-hotise.
