A Texas Justice of the Peace.
There is a Justice of the Peace oat
j fl Crosby county who is certainly un
fit for the office. He has no idea of
the law, or bis powers nnder the law.
jj e i g also disposed to be arbitrary
yjd unreasonable in his decisions.—
jf 0 t long since he tried a Mexican for
furious riding, found him guilty, and,
placing a black cap on his judicial
bead, sentenced him to be hung by
( the neck until he was dead. The
members of the Crosby county bar
bad great difficulty in persuading the
Justice that be did not have the ju
risdiction enough to bang a man.
Week before last he found a man
guilty of shooting a bull that did not
belong to him, and fined him seventy-
five dollars.
“Why, Jedge,” said the doomed
man, “I haven’t got no seventy-five
dollars; I can’t pay no suoh fine.”
“The State of Texas puts mein
this office to find out a way to make
men pay their fines. Ton will cut ce
dar poles until you have out enough
to satisfy the majesty of the law,” re
plied the justice.
“Bnt, Jedge, what use has the State
of Texas for cedar poles.” “It’s this
court who needs them cedar poles to
build a fence. I’ll take the poles and
settle with the State of Texas for
them."
And the poor fellow is cntting ce
dar poles for the State of Texas right
now.
The latest feat of the Crosby coun
ty Justice was to hold an inquest on
the body of a negro who bad been
<bot. Instead of summoning six ju
rymen, as the law directs, be empan
eled twelve stating that they were his
friends, and needed the jury fee to
support t heir families. Tbeir verdict
read as follows:
“We, the jury, find the negro guilty
of being dead, and as we do not know
who his heirs, are, wo will divide his
property among as jurors, with the
understanding, however, that should
the heirs turn up, we will, mutually,
help each other in keeping them out
of it.”

years ago it brought on paraly

months, and the best doctors
in the city said T could not
live. I suffered fearfully from
indigestion, and felt aver two
years could not eat solid food
and for a large portion of the
time was unable to retain even

brown’s Iron hitters and now
after taking two bottles X am

A reporter dropped intfi one of onr
retail etitablishmenls and held a con
versation with the proprietor.
“Yon have a great rush,” remarked
the reporter.
“Yes,” replied the proprietor, “a
big rush—partly because of tho sea-
sou, but mostly on account of adver
tising.”
“How can you tell whether adverti
sing pays, and what papers are good
mediums ?
“I can tell that advertising pays by
stopping my advertisements. Trade
drops not at once, but the tide of pur
chasers flows some other way. The
cash receipts tell the story.”
“Is there any difference in the
sharpness of buyers—I mean, do they
haggle much overprices?”
“Ob, no; we sell at one price, and
all the best stores in Boston do the
same. They will sometimes say they
cau buy such and snob an article
choaper elsewhere. When they men
tion the place we send and see if its
true, and if so we mark onr stock
down.”
“Snppose you should give np ad
vertising?”
“Well, I should have a good pile of
money the first year, bnt I should
loso a bigger pile the next two years.
Yon must keep the boiler heated if
you want steam. If yon bank yonr
fires too long it takes time to start
up. Advertising is the steam which
keeps business moving. I’ve studied
tbe matter.”
An Englisman has invented a way
of sawing a murderer’s head off with
a hot wire, electrically heated. It is
not an entirely new invention, howev
er. In this country a little wire pall
ing has often caused an office-holder’s
head to fall into the basaet.—Norris-
