ruBLisim* *vkbt SATURDAY MORNING at BRUNSWICK. GEORGIA. SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 10,1882. home mattkus. Tbf Brunswick bracket-works now omploy six hands. Good showing t hat. . • j , I'ho M. and B. extension is said to bo completed to within twenty miles * of Atlanta. Whortleberries are getting qqite plentiful. They sold this week as low a live cents per quart One of our boys says—and he means it, too— *T!» sweet to love—but oh ! how bitter To love a girl “ *d then can't felt her.’ R. B. Reppard cleared German brig Bernard, on the 7th inst, for Pernam buco with 162,594 feet pitch pine tim ber, valued at $2,601. Cook Bros. & Co. cleared British Imrk Onoata, on the 8th inst., forJBu- onos Ayres, with 409,114 feet pitch &>ine lumber, valued at $6,760. An excursion party of twenty or more, from about Eastman, visited Cumberland this week. What a pity we do not have a boat on the line to Cumberland. Rev. A. C. Ward has returned from bis Northern trip, much improved in appearance and flesh. He will re name his labors the coming Sabbatb, to the delight of bis friends and « "embers. Brunswick water is certainly on the improve. These deep-driven wells are just tbe thing. We heard a gentle man say, a few days since, that the water from his pump was "so cold that it made his teeth chatter.” Penny Local: “We’ll bet a stick of chewing gum bro. Stacy is the proud est man that ever strutted through lironswiok in a white necktie. The Advebtibib and Appeal did good work for the late Glynn County Fair held in that city, and now tho fair is pro- uounced a “grand success,” coming out four or five hundred dollars ahead. Mr. Chas. E. Flanders has opened up a neat and attractive ice cream and lemonade saloon, next door to the Ladies’ Store. He will also keep in connection a fruit stand. He offers in this issuo to furuiiib cream to fami lies and parties os they may desire it, from one quart upwards. C»U on him when you want auything in his line. Everything about bis saloon looks eloan and inviting. Tho Macon and Brunswick exten sion to Atlanta will bo through by tho Fourth of July and to Rome sometime iu August. *We will then Imve a line of our own and not bo compelled to have our western freights dolayed as heretofore to await the convenience of Mr. Wad ley, aor to pay his local rales. Competition among the soda foun tain men of Macon is tho means of giving tho people of that city some dainty drinks. One furnishes Italian ere4m, another ice cream soda, anoth or coffee and chocolate, bat Roland te Hal), onr former townsman, leads the crowd by furnishing his custom ers with cbauipagno soda. Couldn’t ..ome of our soda folks follow edit? John M. Tisou, of Jamaica, that lie liorH not get his Advertised and Api'e.-- regulurh, »>id that he frequently has to send over to a neighbor's to get a copy, tbe said neighbor always getting bis copy piomptly. In expl»nation we would >ay that that neighbor's paper and Mr. T.’s go in tbe same wrapper to Jamaica p«>»t olliee, so if his neighbor gets his copy regularly it is proof positive that the fault must tie nearer home, as the Jamaica packego is not oven opened n”»il it arrives nt its des tination. The fault, therefore, must either .be carelessness iu tbe office at (Communicated). O, say, you vlU meet. Am you pr*s op the street. While the raindrop# are heavily streaming, Aa weU aa at night. When tbe atari ahine out bright, Tbe flrat lot of watermelons of theaoaaoa, At the Bosh Grocery Store Of Goldsmith k Co.; And the Boat all the wh'le, With hie pleaaanteat amUe, Doing tho honora to hia customers gracefully, t POST. Well, by tho time our next issue comes out, orr office will bo in tele- phonio communication with the busi ness men of the town. We would like, by way of celebrating tbe event that every sneb business man shall send over the lines to us an adver tisement (be it ever so small) as his first greeting. Some have already said they would do so. L’arioso Hall has been straightened np from the effects of the late blow, and the roof thoroughly braced. It would have been a sad evont for oar citizens if the building had been de stroyed. We all feel an interest in common iu L’onoso for it has fur nished what has long been wanted—a pleasant place for pnblio gatherings, entertainments, etc., where all, irre spective of cliques or denominations, can meet The young men did a good act when they put up L’arioso HalL Acting postmaster Olande Quarter- man, of Darien, has “told on” tho Stalwarts, who sought to get from him his little subscription of $22 for campaign purposes, towards tbe per petuating of the party. Wonder if our postmaster has been called on yet.— They ought not to bother him, for by the miserable arrangement of oar mail arrivals, he is unablo to hire clerks enough to distribute the mail as fast os the people want it. No, Mr. Committee-man,don’t call on oar man; he has need of all his spare change. Besides, you fellows ought to bo ashamed for trying to oust him the other day. Watermelons “by the wagon load” have been arriving in various towns over Georgia. Wo hoar of one man near Albany, Ga., who has been eat ing melons for two weeks. How is this, track fanners of Glynn ? Don’t go book on ub that way. We have al ways contended that onr seasons here were earlier than the interior of tho State, but no melons do we see yot of fered for sale. Later.—Since the nbovo was in type, our enterprising grocers Gold smith & Co., have received a boat load from Florida. This, however, does uot effect what wo have written. Onught Attain. Ed Symons, who had just finished a twelve months' sentence, had scarce ly exchanged his striped suit for citi zen’s clothes, bofore ho ngnin got in to trouble. Getting drunk, bo made an attack of some kind upon Mr. Borchardt for which offense ho was summoned to appear beforo the Po lice Court Failing to put in his ap pearance, be was ordered to be arrest ed aud put iu jail, ready for tho next day’s court Ed was easily found, but not so easily brought to jail, as he resisted the officers of the law, and in tbe melee, oat bis own brother in the arm, who bad been pressed in to asssit in tbe arrest After be was ta ken to jail, his parting salute to offi cer Randolph was a blow from his fist, for which he received, iu return, a clip over tho head that laid the skin open to tho bone. Gness he .will be put this time where work will be harder than on our chain-gang, with a slight enrtailiug of liberties. • Work ot tht* Knife. James Burroughs, u colored chap from Savannah, in an altercation with bis wife last Weduesduy evening, be came enraged and pluuged bis knife in her throat. Jealousy Reems to have been the cause. It seeuis that they bad had a little spat, when, to ap pease his wrath, she threw her arms around bis neck. This incensed him so highly that the stab was the result. He is now in jail awaiting the result of the wound. It seems to us a hard- Steadily Increasins. Wo see steady growth in appear ance of things at the cigar store of Mr. Goodbread—quite an improve ment over bis early beginning. Then be had one box of tobacco, two boxes of cigars and a srna'l j»»* of snuff. Now he has on his shelves thirty-two brands of chewing tobacco, twenty- five of cigars, ten of cigarette, besides, snnff in jars, bladders and boxes; be also keeps pipes, smoking tobaccos, etc., etc.. He has clearly demonstrat ed that the time has arrived when onr people can deal in specialties and less in general stocks. Primary Election - The primary election of the Democ racy of Glynn was held on Wednes day last, and resulted in the choice of Mr. J. E. Dart as the standard bearer of tbe party through the coming cam paign. There seems to have been bnt the one candidate in tbe field, though at one of tbe precincts six votes were cast for Mr. G. S. Scarlett, by some of bis friends, as a compliment, we presume. There being no opposition tbe vote was small and stood as fol lows: J. E. Dart, 215; G. S. Scarlett, 6. Siena ot the Times. We call attention to the card of L. Madison, painter, and, we may add, artist, in another column. Mr. Mad ison is from Wilmington, N. -C., where he attained much reputation for fine work. We have seen specimens of his sign painting at the office of J. M. Dexter, broker and insurance and real estate agent, which cannot be ex celled for fine workmanship any where, and we are pleased to com mend him to those desiring painting of any kind. A Stramre Phenomenon. On Wedfiesday lost, from twelve to one o’clock during the day, observers of the sun hereabouts witnessed a sight not often seen. There was around the sun a clearly defined ring, similar to that often seen around the moon at night, only more distinct and with tbe outer edges clearly marked with tbe colors of the rainbow. Short ly after its appearance the rainbow hues began to fade, and soon nothing remained but the ring itself. Turned to Good Account. What to do with the slabs has been and is still a vexed question with saw mill men, especially in a town where the perpctunl fires of a slab pit are a nuisance. This commodity is being utilized in onr community for wharf filling. It is all laid down in com pact form and covered over with earth aud stone. When thus covered and saturated with salt wator, it will last for years. Card ol Thanks. The undersigned would tender her thanks to the ladies of the Agricultu ral Society for their oft-repeated kindnoss to her, which she gratefully appreciates, but, while thanking them for their kind remembrance of her, she would not be unmindful that to God all praise is due, who alone di rects tbe thoughts of His creatures in acts of love and charity. Mrs. L Morgan. Grand Raffle.
