Wallins for Clrcunutance*. Whsn the Legislature convened ] 8S t winter, a member, who was anx- loa9 to make personal acquaintances and discover what sort of men he had to handle, was introduced to a repre sentative from a wilderness district, „ n d he straightway began to throw oat feelers. “I presume you will take an active part in the present session?” he queried. "Well, I dunno,” was the doubtful reply. •‘Are you pledged ?” “Not to speak of.” “Have you any particular policy mapped out ?” “Y-e-s, a sort o’ policy. Dnrin’ the :irst week I shall support all motions to adjourn; dnrin' the next I shall ir.ov9 to amend, and after that I shall be guided by circumstances. Some of our folks think that I am an ora tor, and some of them say I’m a fool, aud I’ve got to take a sort o’ middle course and convince both factious.” Pearl Flahtncon the Pacific Coast. San Francisco Call. , Poarl fishing on the coast of Lower California is an important industry, uo less than one thousand divers be ing employed in bringing up the cost ly black pearl, which is found in a great state of perfection in the deep waters of La Pnz. The pearl oysters an found from one to six miles off shore, in wator from one to twenty- one fathoms deep. Merchants pro vide liats, diving apparatus, etc., for the prosecution of the business, on cuuiliiiou that they can purchase all the pearls found, at prices to be agreed upon. These boats, which are usually of about five tons burthen, sail up aud down the coast from May to November searching for treasure. The product of a year’s work is about $500,000, estimating the pearls at their first cost Remains; Vaccination A Test Cano Ratio at Last. Atlanta Post-Appeal. This morning Mr. George Hinman, the furniture manufacturer, refused to allow the physician appointed for that purpose to vaccinate himself aud family. Hr. Hinman is not a believer in vaccination, and for that reason was not willing to have the city ordi nance carried out so far as himself and his family were concorAnl. Mr. Ilinuiau was arrested upon his refns- ai to be vaccinated, and notified to ap pear before the Recorders court. To a Po»t-ApjmcU reporter Mr. Hinuian stated that it was his intention, if fined, to test the legality of the com pulsory vaccination ordinance. The case will excite considerable interest, and tioLu present indications there or. .luison to be music in the air. A circus is a decidedly important institution—to take money out of a community. Says the Newark (N. .T.) f “The visit of a circus to a mau- utacturing city like Newark iR both costly and demoralizipg. The actual money loss to the community by the visit of Burnnm’s show, last wook, ap proximates $50,000.” That amount of money, devoted to some needed lo cal public institution, would be a last- iug benefit, but, given to a circus, it goes as a "fleeting show." Circusses are decidedly expensive American in stitutions. li. G: News: Mr. Hartridge Parrish while driving through a branch a few nights since, encountered an alligator i>. the road. In its efforts to get from under the horse, it made a terrible splashing in the water, which fright ened the fiery steed very much. The situation became si ill more critical bv its gi ving between the spokes and griiiiiiiig like a hog as it revolved with the wheel. It was with cousid- arable difficulty that Mr. Parrish pre sented a smash-up, and felt much gratified when he found he was extri cated from his unwelcome associate. l’he late James Vick, Rochester Seedsman, gave away $10,000 a year. After the grasshopper invasion in o.ui.sus ho gave $25,000 worth of seed t" the t ifi'orers of that State. Noted Men ! • Dr. John F.
