How Pina are Made.
A Hartford paper tells bow piss
are made in a manufactory in that
„ity. Coils of brass wire from the
manufactory are passed through a se
ries of rollers which remove all the
ebort turns, and the wire is wound on
a large reel from which it is drawn by
feed rollers into the machine. As the
point of the wire leaves the rollers it
enters a pair of jaws, which seize and
bold it in such a position that the for
ward end is exactly within the die by
which the head is formed. In less
time than can be reckoned the head
is formed by three blows and the wire
cat off at the proper point. Then the
jaws release their hold, a slide shoots
forward and throws the pin side ways
on a carriage, where it is moved for
ward by an endless screw so that a
constant series of headed wires lying
parallel to each other and about three-
sixteenths of an inch apart goes stead
ily on and by means of proper rollers,
each piece receives a rotary motion.
In this manner they pass under files
which have a reciprocating motion,
and as the pins are rolling over and
over they are ground equally on ev
ery side, ;md a beautiful point is pro
duced. After passing the last file the
piece of wire is thrown out into a
tray, and as far as form is concerned,
is a finished pin. It is then tumbled
into a barrels with sawdust in the
usual way of cleaning, and then pat
in a boiling solution, from which it
comes out white-coated or tinned, is
Hgaiu cleaned in the same way and is
now finished, and needs only to be
stuck iu the papers and packed.
The sticking machine is one of the
most interesting things connected
with the whole business. The pins
ure thrown, several pounds at a time,
in a large hopper which has a vibra
tory motion and is slightly inclined.—
The result is that the pins gradually
silt along and enter and inclined
trough provided with grooves which
admit the shank but are too narrow
for the head. A large portion of these
pins settle into the grooves and con
tinue moving down into' them, while
those which have not taken the prop
er position come at last to a place
where they are thrown into a pan
which is occasionally emptied into the
hopper. There is now a numbor of
rows of pins traveling down toward
the lower end of the machine. Reach-
the end of the track an ingeniously
contrived sliding guard permits one
pin at a time to issne from euch chan
nel and fall in a nearly upright posi
tion against a ledge. Now all this
time a long strip of paper has been
unwinding from a roll and passing
down through an apparatus which
gives it a fold at the points where the
pins are to bo stnck. As these folds
come under the row of pins lost men
tioned a hammer with a separate bead
for each pin comes down, and the whole,
row is instantly driven through two
separate folds of the paper. • Then
the paper passes on, another row of
pins dunes into position, and so the
process goes on indefinitely. The ar
rangement by which the paper is fed
takes account of the difference in
space bet wen the rows, which is made
necessary by the manner of folding,
and also the wider space which sepa
rates the group of roWs which belong
to one paper of pins from that which
goes to make up the next The con
tinuous strip of paper is afterwards
cut at the proper points, and each
piece is inspected for defective pins
or for places in which a pin has failed
to arrive, and only perfect groups are
pHNsed. The papers are then folded
bv ham) and pnt op in packages.
