1 m ST. MIMON'H ITEMS. BY MAJAR. We were glad to greet Mr. Warren A. Fuller on the Island, who spends 4 few days with us before returning North. f There is not a fox, red or gray, on tbe Island, nor was there a wild-oat till since the war. If it were not for this latter. pest, banters might do well to introduce the wild turkey for sporting purposes. “Smack jour lips, you sassy nigger, for <le totem growin' bigger." St. Si'ions is bound this year to be come <me large potato patch. Every available space is being utilized, i>y both big and - small planters,*in/the cultivation of this important tuber. Jim Gould says .Will Taylor may call out “e pluribus unurn" on tho wa termelon question, bat on potatoes he’s got him. He plants three acres of well-prepared land, and says he’s good for oue thousand bushels next fall. Such a good farmer as Jim is should have a nice little helpmeet to enjoy and take care of the products of his toil and labor. We were shown an excellent speci men of skill in taxidermy last week. Mr. W. J. Hays has proven quite an adept in the art He has mounted and preserved the skin of an alligator some fourteen feet long. The posi tion of the head, feet and tail of the saurian is most life-like—so perfectly natural that it requires close observa tion to see that it is not really alive.— Mr. Warren A. Fuller sends it to his son Bertie, in Wellesley, Mass. “She is getting J to be quite a favor ite,” is the conclusion of a compli mentary notice of the steamer David Clafrk in the last Timber Gazette of Darien. Not so with St. Simons.— Capt. Hallows and Purser Gay, by their close attention to business and their uniform gentlemanly deport ment to passengers and parties com ing in business oontaet with them; have for years uiade the “old Clark a favorite. Then “our Chester” keeps the ball of good| feeling constantly Hart is said to be tbe banner coun- for primitiveness. Once.in a prelim- iry trial, a witness was asked if she ed in Georgia or South Carolina, irt being separated from Carolina ly by tho river. With considerable is of tbe head (implying that she b w a thing or two) she replied, li-ther, sir; I live in H-a-r-t,” giving B name that twang so peculiar to juntainous Georgia. The other y we were reminded of this oircutu- mee in a court of justice on the Is- ld. A native of St. Simons, to a oilur question, answered that she ved in McIntosh county.” . J Mr. Norman W. Dodge, of Dodge, cigs & Co., New *York, has recently nt out a fine library of one hundred d fifty volumes, for the use of the iployes of St Simons Mills andl air families. The books arrived ear- this week, and are being numbered d nicely covered, in readiness for eolation. Mr. T. B. Meigs, of the me firm, recency sent oat a fine ed ition of Sunday school and churoh iging books. Such gifts show the terest these parties take in tbe men- i and moral welfare of their eniploy- and they are highly appreciated by e recipients. . - . j , «2 x 3—61. Georgia to Michigan, eeting!” These are the exact Ag es, and, among lumber men, would can a stick two by three, sixty-oue et long. Although this is a lumber strict, we don’t moan lumber or eorgia pine by tbe above, but a mel i—a tealevinelqn—a Georgia wuter clou. It was not two by three, six- -ouu feet long either, but two feet ng by three feet in circumference, sighing sixty-one pounds. Willie ij lor, of St. Simons, raised it. Tay r says “e phiribu* unit in”—in tho nguago of the Indian interpreter, plenty more where this one came om. A gentleman on the Island mt it to friends in Michigan with le compliments of the season. During one of the* late blows, the .ail steamer Ruby, on her regular in ward bound ttfip, came near meeting with a serious accident. When about midway the sonnd, her pilot, Julian Broad, noticed, ahead of him, three water spouts, seemingly abont ten feet apart, abont a half mile distant, coming in the direction of Plantation creek to Back river, taking the Baby in their track. Finding them making somewhat to tbe right of him, Broad sheered as fast as possible to tbe left, thereby missing the column of water formed by the three abont one hnn dred yards in front of the Ruby.— When the three spouts joined they formed a body of wuter oue hundred feet in diameter, and twenty to twen ty-five feet high. Bat for the cool ness of the pilot above mentioned, and the engineer, Mr. J. B. Dart, the steamer wonld have foundered and the whole crew been lost. The spont moved over toward St. Simons beach, and then changed toward Jekyl, and in a few moments disappeared, when a very heavy rainfall sncceeded. The principal feature in celebrating the fourth on St Simons was tho re gatta in the afternoon gotten np by the Messrs. Stevens brothers. They are within a fraction of the same weight, height and mnsenlar frame, and resemble each other in many particulars, although Mr. J. L. is abont twenty-seven years of age, and Mr. C. G. Stevens only twenty-one.— Since the latter’s early approach to manhood, there has ever been be tween them a spirit of friendly rival ry in regard to strength. Especially has this rivalry been very spirited in their boatmanship. Being descended of a noble old sea captain, and having from their very infancy led an almost continuously amphibious life, they have both long since aspired to the point of being thebest boatman abont St. Simons. So to test their relative boatmunship, they each constructed a boat seventeen feet long, rigged ex actly alike, with gaff sails, and at 4 p. m. on the fourth they cast anchor and sailed from St. Simons Mills to Gas coigne Mills and return, whole dis tance about two miles, in full sight of about two hundred anxious lookersr on. Until the very last it was doubt ful who would gain the prize. . When fairly out, .the committee declared George winner by less than a minute, The boys and their friends repaired to Mr. Arnold’s hotel, and enjoyed qaite a feast in ice cream and other delicacies. John does not give up, but issues his notice that he is ready to George mi the next fourth. Victor Sewing Machines! Needles and Attachments.
