Mr. Lewis Beaeb, an old typo of the Appeal, was in tho city this week. Mr. Tim Myers, a resident, of this county, died on the 20th inst., of pa ralysis. Mr. H. W. Way, teacher at Bethes- da Institute, has been spending the week in onr city. Jteu <lnsters|iu>t .wcelved at MU-helson's. Mr. Jiu Lauibrigitt has sent us u specimen of waterraolon, which, with little manipulating resembles u duck. Col. Alfred (Shorter, of Rome, Gu., the wealthiest man in North Georgia, died on the 18th inst. He was seveu- enty-uine years old. Have you examined H. L. Harris' new stock of jewelry, watches, silver ware, etc. He now has quite an as sortment aud is selling cheap. One of tho host evidences of onr growth is the number of truck farms springing up around town. This in dustry should be fostered in every way. Bend end bengle ring* tn gfcet variety at II. L Harrlv*. Messrs. Micbelsou «t Bros, are pil ing rip brick .,n Newcastle street pre paratory to commencing their now store next to Messrs. Moore J; Me Crary’s new building. The festive mosquito is abroad in the land since the recent ruins. Ev ery old tin can carelessly thrown out, that has held water, has provon a nest in which to hutch them out. Mr. F. Joergor has returned to the city and opened ^ new drug store ext to Goldsmith & Nock, whore ho Will be pleased to greet his old friends and customers. See his ad. The fleas have disappeared to a large extent from our borders, but, oh, dear! what a crop of roaches the town can boast of. They seem almost furtaumerous as the sand$ on the sea shore. Extremes bavo certainly met in the make up of the new tiriu of Goldsmith & Nock. The. former gentlemen is probubly the largest and the latter the smallest, in point of weight, in the county. The first passenger train through from Mucou to Atlanta, over the new road, the M. .V B. Extension, was run on Tuesday lust. It carried tho BruuS' wick delegation to the Gubernatorial Convention. Now dutguv in jtiwelry it U. L Hkrrtv'. Messrs. Cook Bros. & Co. are offer ing this week calicoes, lawns, shoes, eta, st extremely low figures, to tuuke room for their fall stuck. Call at once aud secure bargains. They meau just what thoy say. Our young friend Arthur Blain is spending his vacation at home. He is a student of Franklin College at Athens, and we are pleased to say that his monthly reports show that he has not been wasting his time. If thorough drilling persistently ap plied and constantly kept "n^'M *f- " HMthd n^te upon t^ote, s availeth ling, Prof. Banmgartner and his band will certainly accomplish much. They seem Dover to tire in tbeir work. E. Burbage has purchased the Brunswick grist mill, located on railroad near Mr. Wilder's distillery. In our judgement he hAR bought a fine piece of property, and he is just the man to make money out of it.— Mr. Burbage informs ns that be will not commence grinding before fall, as he will be away much of the summer. The Senatorial Convention, called at Folkston last Saturday to select a candidate for standard bearer of the Democracy of Charlton, Camden and Glynn counties, proved u failure, Charlton s delegates failing to put in will be seen by published proceedings uf meetiug. The truth is, Charlton has no politicians, ami although it is her turn fo name the senator, she re ally bus no seekers for the place. Services, as usual, to-morrow at the Methodist church. Morning subject: “The Voluntary Humiliation of the Sou of God.’’ Evening subject will be a continuation of last Sabbath night’s, nnd answer the inqury: “What Sent the Rich Man to Hell?’’ . All cordial ly invited. Messrs. A. Kaiser & Bro- have tBis week become connected with the tele phone exchange, and are now pre pared to convorso through that medi- nm upon any subject from the price of a cambric needle to the eroetion of brick buildings. Tbeir number is twelve. Don’t forget to put it on your list. See advertisement of the new firm of Goldsmith A Nock. We bespeak for the new firm u continuance of the liberal trade extended the old firm.— We call special attention to the adver tisement of “butter on ice.” The ar rangement is complete. The butter six tubs at a time, is kept firm and nice. It is certainly an ire, arrange ment. i Died, on Monday night last, after an illness of seven days, at the resi donee of her uncle, Mr. J. C. Norman Anna Brooks, of Texas. Her mother, a sister of Mrs. Norman, died in Tex os about two years ago aud only two months since her father brought her on and gave her to her anut to raise. But Providence had' decreed other wise, and she has gone to join her mother. Of tho sixteen members of onr pres ent chain gang, fifteen are from Way- cross. This is a sacf commentary up on the morals of that town. Whilst on this snbject, we would ask if it be good polioy for us to take these chaps from neighboring towns on onr force Do thjBy not very naturally stay here after tbeir time of sentence is out. they boing a class not identified any where V We are In favor of immigra tion, but not of that element. The officers of the Excelsior Liter ary Sooiety request us to announce that there will be a grand festival of ice cream, cake, milk and peaches, etc., at L'arioso Hall next Thursday night (July 27th) for the benefit of the white public school—to purchase maps, charts, etc. The undertaking is a laudable one and the affair will be a pleasant recreation to all who at tend. Then let every patron of the school and well wisher be on hand “numerously,” which means, with all his family and friends. Factory llrmimtKl Work. By reference to onr advertising col umns it will be seen that factory No. 2 has again began the manufacture of cigars, under a new firm name, how ever. Mr. B. F. Macintire, one of the former copartners, and Mr. O. W. Sey forth, the former foreman, now com prise the new firm. Work has re sumed this week in tbeir new factory, on Bay street, over the store of Mr. Albert Wenz, with eleven hands, all told. Already, Mr. Macintire Informs os, they Ijave orders.ohead for.$ worth havo oB a fine lot of genuine Havana tobaooo, which is f>eing made up into cigars as fast ns possible. The new firm mean business and we predict that their working force will be doubled in t few months’ time. Lovers of fine ci gars are invited to call and try their goods. A Niue Operation. Dr. J. S. Blain, assisted by Drs- Weed, Davis, Hazlehnrst and Rob ins, performed an operation this week that reflects credit upon the profession. The operation re ferred t<> was the removal of a tumor from the arm of Mr. Raybon, of Lri- latoD, that weighed one and one-half pounds. This enormous lump of flesh was removed without the Joss of au ounce of blood, and without any knowledge of pain on the part of the an appearance, owing to some misun-! patient. They were only thirty tnin- Icrstunning it. some way. Another 1 utes at the operation. Doctor B. ban- effort will be made at an early day, as Idles the knife like on expert. More WatfM*. We Hre very much lik»- the son old Erin vfho said “I lay far six long weeks in the month of August and my only cry was wather, .wuther, cold wntber.” We are uot very particular about its being cold, but the burden of our cry is water, more water. Fore man Merrifield is alive to the work before him. He proposes being ready, if wanted, to render all services with in bis power. That which is out. of his power he cannot render, of course. He tested the various tanks and finds he has but one that he can depend o,n to last any length of time. For iu stance, the steamer will oxliAust the upper tank in just twenty-seven min utes, aud the one at M. & B. Railroad depot, built by the railroad, in just ten minutes by the watch. So then we have but the lower tank to depend on. So far, this one has never been exhausted. With the limited supply of hose,-we are to-day nearly power less. Oar fine steamer can be of no avail unless we have plenty of water and plenty of hose. We are to-day only half equipped. Wo have a mag nificent engine and two powerful horses, and a company ready and wil ling to do duty—so far, so good—but what availeth these unless water and hose are at command ? Let us either supply these or else do away with the others, for they are expensive toys to keep just to look at The Way or ok« On Monday afternoon last {Sheriff Miller, of Ware, assisted by the shal of Waycross, made a raid npe, gambling nest on the edge of a br„ Uc jj near the town, nod captured fif persons, all colored, who were In ling pastebeanl for amusement. The entire party were arraigned tl* <j a following and thirteen of the numb* - ) were convicted. Two paid out H nd the other eleven were sent to tliji, ou> to join Frank Higginbotham’s ^ brigade—six for. six months aud ij Vt for four months. Among tho number sent here is one chap who shot N&t Barnes, some time since, :U Waycrot* so after he is through his sentence he may have something else to amuse him. 13uri{iurH Abroad. On Thursday morning last, hs Mr. Geushaw, of Gsrdi, Ga., arose from his slumbers in the upper story of the building on Bay street occupied by Mr. J. T. McDaniel, ho found him self minus his pantaloons. Upon in quiry, it was found that'-Mr G.’s pants Wdke h&tigitfg on-the fence rear of Mr. Ghas. Doerflinger’s store. The pocket-book, containing about $75, we learn, had been removed from the pocket. Was also discovered lea|- the back W Mr.IDp , Jag to the transom fight above' thrf door. Evidently the same party who stole tho contents of Mr. Genshaw’s pants pocket under took to enter Mr. D.’s store through the transom, bat no doubt discovered wheii he reached the opening the form of a man upon the bed, and beat a hasty retreat. Mr.. D. has al ways slept in bis store since it was robbed a short lime since. No clue has been found to tbe perpetrator. Wesleyan Keumle College. We call special attention in this is- suo to advertisement of Wesleyan Fe male College, of Macon. There prob ably ib no institution in tbe country better equipped than this. Besides, the building* has been materially changed ana hularged during the past year through the munificent gift of George I Seney, who has famished the institution more money than tho officers really thought they would re quire. We may therefore reasonably suppose that every arrangement and convenience that money could com mand, has beon procured. For par- in r A Terrific* Crash. Last Tuesday afternoon about 4 :iJ ij o’clock, as a heavy cloud was making in the northeast, but which was held back by a southeast breeze, a vivid flash of lightning, accompanied by a terrific crash, startled the denizens of our town. The bolt struck a tree near Shiloh church, riddling it and stun ning several persons in that vicinity Old Mrs. Gates, the washerwoman, was knocked down; also, two children playing in her yard. A few other persons in that locality were severely shocked. Beyond the shock of these persons, no serious damage was done The shock was rendered more start ling from the fact that it was so an expected, there being, apparently, no cloud overhead. ExportM. R.
