John Ourrio is selling some tine beef. Sep Deaver is said to be the most successful chicken-raiser on the Is land. ,, _ The best well of water on 8t Si* mons is at Gascoigne, on the lot of Mr. H.-P. Gray. The mean temperature of St. Si mons is at least five degrees lower than that of any city north of Wash- qunlit; , j**.# - . - _ _ r edding of hia caudal extremit A part of the unwritten history of St Simons reveals beyond a reasona ble doubt that the first execution a la Judge Lynch ever known was upon this Island about one hundred years We give it as told to ns by a gentleman to whom it was related by an eye witness. It occurred near the coming together of the three main roads of tile Island, leading to Fred erica, Hamilton and Cannon’s Point ington with twenty thousand inhal^ ude J the lowing circumstances: b , j, n Acinzeu went out hunting game one itants. Heat is oppressive in the Northern cities. An invitation is extended to their citizens to come down among the sea-breezes, fine climate and 'low temperature of St. Simons. The hardest rainfall for many years was witnessed bn the Island last Sun day afternoon. Floods and sheets of water poured, untill our Island was almost completely submerged. Many puddle holes, miscalled wcIIb, are full to overflowing. All we need now at our bouse is an ordinary oyster can to dip up tho water with and a sieve to filter it through before using. The next rain will bring it to the top, so we can tuko ours on all-fours. Dock Stallings is the happy man of the Island this week. Ho is being visited by hiB sister, Mrs. Dawisb, of Angustu, his brother, R. R. Stallings, a prominent employe of the Western and Atlantic Railroad (a pet of Joe Brown’s), and his friend, Mr. Wil liam Geneers, of Chuttanooga. Mr. S. is doing the agreeable uy showing every object of interest to an up- country visitor on St. Simons and surrounding islands. As is every in telligent person, thoy are charmed with island life. “Delightful! deli cious !’’ say they. ' ; rT My friend, did you over get badly frightened ? If so, how did you feel ? If you Lave forgotten the seusutiou, we learn there is aiynspeotor, at St. Simons Mills that might possibly re mind you of the peculiar feeling.— Bast Tuesday, whilst deeply absorbed in the duties of bis post, he heard a note of warning just in time to see a whole avalanche of lumber coming di rectly towards him, with spectres of cracked skulls, broken legs, mashed lingers, mangled bodies, sweltering iu pools of gore, behind each pioce.— Fortunately, being a good swimmer, and possessing that remarkable pres ence of mind, which novel deserts some persons in the hour of danger, Mr. Inspector made a miraculous lsap, cleared the dock, dove down deep into the river, and saved himself from all harm. When the way was pronounced clear above, he crawled back on the dock, to receive the grat ifying intelligence that the lumber did not come within twenty feet of where he was stauding.. We hftvo been shown a curiosity in the shape of a tooth taken from the mouth of a negro employe of St. Si mons Mills. It occupied the space in the mouth usually appropriated to tho two left upper molars. It con sisted of a crown, much decayed, at least five-eigths of an ineb long, with six well-defined fangs, three on each side, proceeding from the crown-in an irregular manner. Was this two teeth joined together V If not, what was it? If two jaw teeth joined, there certainly would have beeu some traces left to show the point of con joining. Again, if this abnormity consisted of two, teeth, there should have been two fangs on the inside and four on the outside, as in all reg ular upper jaw teeth there is bat ono fang inserted on the inside and two on the outside of the jaw. It was a lapsus natural, intended for a lower link in the development of man, for this peculiar formation is sometimes met in the iower animals, but never before have we seen it in the human A hard-hearted, unsympathetic, non- African-lover wickedly suggests that this ib but another evidence of the connecting link according to Darwin’s theory of evolution, and that this is day, taking his gun and little dog.— He did not return, was hunted for by his neighbors, but could not be found. It was noticed, however, that his lit tle dog returned home promptly at meal times, acted in a peculiar man ner, and just as soon as he got his meals he left, going always in a cer tain direction through the thick copse. This suggested the idea of watching the dog, with a view to finding the master. Next day a couple of neigh bors put the design into execution, and followed behind the little dog some mile or more, where the corpse of the missing man, with marks of vi olence, was found behind a large log, partially covered. This aroused the community to search the whole Is land, then an almost entirely impene trable scrub, for the supposed mur derer. Not far away a celebrated runaway negro, .whose deprodations upon the neighboring farmors bad been very aunoying, was found in his lair, fast asleep, with the gun and other effects of the dead man in hiB possession. He was taken, a court martial ordered, and, after trial, the negro was found guilty, and hung to an oak still standing, jnst south of the Cannon’s l’oint road, near tho above mentioned fork. ’• After hanging till his neck was certainly broken, his body was cut down, decapitated and burnt. The head was then placed up on a pole some twenty feet high, and posted ueur the place, where it re mained as a warning to evil doors for many days. All the masters on the Island sent their slaves to witness this triple execution of hanging, de capitation and burning. This, no doubt, was tho first criminal ’dis patched in the manner which fifty years afterwards Judge Lynch made so famous and effectual a terror to outlaws upon the frontiers. the mere outcropping of some beredi- j sage THK QUARANTINE SYSTEM. Atlant i Const!tut .on. The Republicans in Congress are attacking .Southern interests along the whole line. While tbey propose to increase the tax on cotton ties, they propose to expose those States to a yellow fever epidemic. They have voted away money beyond all precedent and all decency; they have actually spent three hundred millions of dollars, and yet they are not willing to grant the few thousands neceseory to protect our long coast line from in' footed vessels. Havana is just, now full of yellow fever, and many other Golf ports are a constant source of danger, and yet this beautiful Con' gress proposes to break down the work of the National board of Health, which has been confessedly effective and valuable. The epidemic of 1878 could not have occurred, in all proba bility, if we had had a national board of health. A vessel arrivod with no sickness on board. She was fumigat ed ami detained two days. Her own ers were men of wealth and iufinence, and her cargo was depreciating in value. These owners were able to in- mice the local board of health to let the-ship go. From this vessel sprang the frightful epidemic of 1878. If the vessel had been nnder the control of a board that had more regard for the whole country than for local influence or one city, the disease would have been kept on board ship. But the Keifor-ltobeson crowd care very little whether the South becomes u prey to malignant disease or not. They aro intent on plunder, and the appropria tions that have sugar iu them are about the only ones booked for pas- It bWi 7 To wait until you are in bed with dis ease yon may not get over in months, when yon can be cured during the earlv symptoms by Patkcr’s Ginger Tonic.
