Aanvffcctnre of Steel Pen*.
ObrtnlqtftlDdtu Welle.'
Steel used for making pens reaches
the factory in sheets about two feet
long by one foot three inohes wide,
and 0 001 inch thick. , t They are cnt
into bands of different widths, ac
cording to the dimension of the pen
required, the most nsnal widths being
two, two and one-half and three inch
es. The bands are then heated in an
iron box, and annealed, when they
are passed on to the rolls and rednoed
to the desired thickness of the fin
ished pen, thns being transformed in
to ribbons of great delicacy, about
four feet long. The blanks are then
stamped ont from the ribbons by a
punching machine, the tool of which
has the form of the pen required. The
blanks leave the die at the lower part
of the machine, and fall into a draw
er, with the points already formed.—
They ure then pnnohed with the small
hole, which terminates the slit, and
prevents it from extending, and after
ward raised to a cherry-red heat in
sheet-iron boxes. The blanks are then
curved between two dies, the concave
one fixed, and the convex brought
d.ovi, upon it by mechanism. The
pens, now finished as regards their
form, are hardened by being plunged,
hut, into oil, when they are as brittle
us glass. After cleansing by being
placed in a revolving barrel with saw
dust, t hey are tempered in a hollow
cylinder of sheet iron, which revolves
over « coke fire after the muuucr of u
coffee roaster. The cylinder is open
at one end, and while it is being
turned, a workman throws in twenty-
five gross of pons at a time and watch
es carefully the effect of the heat on |
the color of the pens.
When they assume a fine blue tint,
be poors the pens into a large metal
basin, separating them one from an
other, to facilitate the cooling. After
this process, which requires great
skill and experience, comes the pol
ishing, which is effected in recepta
cles containing a mixture of fine sand
and hydrochloric acid, und made to
revolve. This operation lasts twenty-
four hours, and gives the pens a
steel-gray tint. The und of the pen,
between the hole and the point, is
then ground with an emery wheel re
volving very rapidly. There only
now remains to split the pens, which
is the most important operation, be
ing performed by a kind of shears.
The lower blade is fixed, and the up
per one comes down with a rapid mo
tion, slightly bolow the edge of the
fixed blade. To give perfeot smooth
ness to the slit, and ut the Bamc time
make the pens bright, they are sub
jected to the operation of burnishing
oy being pluced in u revolving barrel
almost entirely filled with boxwood
sawdust.

No Whiskey!
■ Brown’s Iron Bitters
is one of the very few tonic
medicines that are not com
posed mostly of alcohol or
whiskey, thus becoming a
fruitful source of intemper
ance by promoting a desire
for rum.
Brown’s Iron Bitters
is guaranteed to be a non
intoxicating stimulant, and
it will, in nearly every case,
take the place of all liquor,
and at the same time abso
lutely kill the desire for
whiskey and other intoxi
cating beverages.
Rev. G. W. Rice, editor ol
the American Christian Rc-
ineiu, says of Brown’s Iron
Bitters:

Gents:—The foolish wast
ing of vital force in business,
pleasure, and vicious indul
gence of our people, makes
your preparation a necessity;
and if applied, will save hun
dreds who resort to saloons
for temporary recuperation.
Brown’s Iron Bitters
has been thoroughly tested
for dyspepsia, indigestion,
biliousness, weakness, debil
ity, overwork, rheumatism,
neuralgia, consumption,
liver complaints, kidney
troubles, &c., and it never
fails to render speedy and
permanent relief
