Whig. -•'fa Captain Farrow, of Islesboro, tells a good story of himself, which oc curred a few years ago while he was trading at Key West It was tFease where a Yankee was outwitted by a Southerner. The captain was trad ing in a email vessel, and had been np the coast to Tampa Bay, where be purchased twenty dozen chickens, paying $1 per dozen. The ohiokens ran all the way in size from a few days old to fall grown ones. At Key West a hotel landlord came alongside and asked the captain how he sold his ohiokens. The captain replied: "If yon pick them out I shall charge yon $6 per dozen; if yon let me pick them ont yon can have thenrtor $3 per dozen.” "All right," said the hotel man, "yon pick them ont.” The captain selected several dozen of the smallest, when the man said: "Qo ahead, I want more.” The captain was now among his largest fowls, and wished the man wonld stop, bnt he still said “Go on.” The captain saw the point at lash The man kept him selecting until be purchased the entire lot at a loss of $20 to the owner. After this the captain sold his chickens on a differ ent plan. xne Lesson of a ouwefl Atlanta Post-Appeal. The career of the late William M. Wadley, President of the Central R K., is full of inspiration for the poor young man of the land. But odr am bitious young man must bear in mind tbe fact that Mr. Wadley, when he was growing up, didn't waste any time smoking cigarettes and banging around on the street ooraers waiting for an easy job with big pay. Eta rolled up bis sleeves and went to work as a blacksmith, and literally ham mered bis way to fame and fortune by striking the hardest kind of licks.— Boys who appreciate the lesson of this honest and ragged career may some day be railroad Presidents or something equally potential. If they don’t appreciate it they will probably be fonnd in their old age jost where they commenced—loafiDg on tbe streets, waiting for something to torn up. . ^ • ! Its cause is most fre quently ascribed to local surroundings, and there Is very little question, but this opinion is substantiated by frets. Malaria does not nec essarily nnean chills and fever while these troubles usually accompany it It often affects the sufferer with general lassitude, accom panied by loss of appetite, sleeplessness, a tired feeling and a high fever, the per son afflicted growing weak er and weaker, loses flesh day after day, until he be comes a mere skeleton, a shadow of his former self Malaria once having laid Its hold upon the human frame, the door or the system Is thrown open to nervous diseases. The body weak and enfeebled absorbs no nourishment, but subiisting upon Itself, the digestive organs no longer perform their functions; the liver oceomes torpid, and other organs failing to do their routine work.speedily become disordered, and dissolution and death are apt to ensue. In Addition to being a certain cure ■for malaria and chub and fever. Brown’s Iron Bitters is highly recommended for all diseases requir ing a certain and efficient tonic; es- peciallyindigestion, dyspepsia, inter mittent fevers, wont of appetite, loss of strength, lack of energy, etc. Enriches the blood, strengthens the mutcles, and gives new ufe to the. nerves. Acts like a chirm on the digestive organs. It is for sale by all respectable dealers In medicines, price, Si per bottle Be sure and get the genuine > BROWN’S IRON BITTER8. Take no often ii< Wanted to Hear. At tbe second battle of Bull Bun there was a recruit who had just join ed a New York company. The oom pany moved forward with the line, aud was presently hotly engaged with Jaokson's men. They had not been at it over five minutes when tlio re cruit slid up to the captain and shout ed: “ Say, Cap, holler as loud as you can, and let’s see if I can hear you.” “What do you mean ? Back into line with you!” shouted the officer. "All right oap, all right The rea son I wanted you to holler was to see if I could hear you when you ordered a retreat It’s all right I guess I can hear if them rebs don’t bring up any more guns 1” At Perth Amboy and all along the Jersey shore the people, according to a time-honored oastom, a few days since celebrated “Salt Water Day.”— The observanoe consists in a grand wash in the briny deep, in which the farmers, their wives, children and old folks all indulge The day set aside for tbe old folks is the 12th of Aug ust, after the harvest is all in. When the bath is over the jolly party finish the day with a sapper, served under the trees, and a dance. The day is as old as the State, and is much revered. “Why should the President of the United States require a special flag ?" asks the New York Sun. "There is,” replies tbe Cincinnati Tima-Star, "no absolute requirement for it—simply a matter of taste. It’s jost the same with pantaloons. He might probably borrow a pair from the Vice President, if we bad a V. P., yet the President generally prefers a pair of his own.— Most of the things in this life whioh we deem necessary are not really so, and this is the case with the Presi dent’s flag. Yet wo cannot see that it does any harm or costs much.’’ Spring styles CLOTHING, HAtS & CAPS! SHOE©! For men and women, boys and girls, children and babies, CHEAP AS DIRT.
