St. Simons Mills, Aug. 28,1882.
■Dear Mr. Editor: The yonng people
of the Island bad quite a pleasant en
tertainment at the residence of Capt.
King, on Saturday evening, 26th inst.
2C temporary ..stage was very prettily
Arranged for the occasion. The en
tertainment opened with an acting
charade in three parts, called “Mend-
I-cant.” The sustaining of the char
acters was worthy of professionals, es
pecially, those of Mrs. Seymour and
Marja. The Cojonel'looked quite like
a haughty olef Englishman, but Mrs.
Seymour nnd Brown “took the cake.”
The old song “Billy Grimes” was act
ed to perfection, and followed by the
sopg and tableau “Gipsy j Warning.”
The fourth was “Sleeping Beauty”
and “Oonrt.” • The performance was
diolecT with a selection from "Pa
tience.” The characters were very
esthetic, and performed their parts
admirably. After the performance,
andienoe and actors were invited by
the kind host and hdatess to partake
of a delightful repast, after, which the
light fantastic was tripped until both
hands of the clock pointed upwards.
One of the Audience.
One handredvears ago the En-
ftbfopkedia- Bri tanica published in
London discourseth thusly. “Ameri
can cotton bath hairy stalks, branch
ing laterally two (o three feet high.
* * *, Yellow flowers, succeeded by
largh oval pods furnished with seed
and cotton.” “AmericanIslands pro
duce Votton spontaneously without
ahy culture of various sizes, especially
w and marshy , grounds. The
act is pale red, but so short that
it can not be .spun. None of this is
’btoflght to Euroupo, tbongh it might
be useful made into hats. The little
that., is picked, up (italics ours)
to make mattrassee and pillars.”
Speaking of cotton mills, it describes
an engine composed of “two rods of
hard wood 18 feet long, 18 inches in
S cmnfereiu-e, fluted, two lines deep.
one end is a kind of little mill
stone, kept in motion by the foot tam
ing the rods in different directions,
situated at one end of the rods.”
This separates tho cotton from the
seed which is thrown down near the
foht of tlm operator. This same
work speaks of Frederica as a towD
built by Gen. Oglethorp at the mouth
of the Altanmba, but in its article on
geography the map of North America
hoe Frederica at the • south of the
month'of the “Savanna” and the town
of “Savanna” just north of Frederica.
We are much gratified that the An
gie and Nellie is doing her part of the
■ wing. Ship captains are fairly de
nted aM.be ide* of cheap towage
and dispatch in answering calls, both
of whiob the Angie and Nellie has in
augurated. Within the past few weeks
raterb&ve dropped down' one-third.
' • Jollars, under tho re-

will if^ior-fts much work as

ty for foaAw^eks ego. Whilst this
'‘in profits must bo prejnfii-
to boats of large tonnage, a small
compactness and strength, on
expenses* can easily weather
through this temporary pressure.—
The Angie and Nellie is on such a ba
sis (so her gallant Gaptain says) that
eyen with the present topple in prices
she can do the work and still lay
aside a modicum for contingencies.—
With her business pluek and loyal
crew, she knows no such word as fail.
She has already become the favorite
with the shipping in our waters.

out further ado, Miab called upon the*
wife* and son, withont telling them
what the husband and father had
said. They say that “four or five
years ago, just below Polatka, they
well remember seeing a nest at least
fifteen feet high, of irregular shape,
attached to several limbs, and at one
end it was as largo as an ordinary
sfigar hogshead.” Miab is naturally
susceptible. He says, however, that
to unreservedly take in, this nest re
quires a credulity of greater capaoity
than anything be possesses.
