One, t GEORGE OHANDL] Bay street. jeS-lr As a gentleman and two ladies were attempting to board the schoofier Jno. H. Cross lying at Reppard’s Wharf this week, the gang plnnk slipped and the entire party started for the water and wonld no doubt have reached it bntfor some friendly hawsers that were between them and the water and on which they were caught. Their condition was indeed perilous nntil they conld be pulled up by'some truckmen who happened to be near. But for those ropes there is no telling what might have been the conse quences. A Sumrestion. “In anion is strength" is an old ad age which might well be applied at this period of our town’s history.— The suggestion is this: There are several persons in town needing stores, offices, etc.., Done of whom are able to erect and own such a building as will* saitrrtlicir purposes, but each of whom conld afford, jointly, to pay for a necessary proportion of a gen eral building such as they all togeth or conld build., Now,let these parties fbrm a joint stock eompliny on aendall scale, unite their efforts and put up nioe brick building, sufficiently lair^ to accommodate them. We have in our mind’s eye, without giving names, several persons who conld very nicely pnjter into tbjs arrangememont. One of tbe'parties already owns a hand some lot bn a southeast corner. He could put in his lot and some cash and the others could easily furnish ifi the night of tn<> 25th nl Mr. J. 8. Marlin, of this city. Tbe deceased might well be numbered ick, ery among bavioi many years. Peing a man of, strong constitution naturally, and leading an active fife, he reached a ripe old. age (seventy-four; years), and at Iftsipass- ed away quietly, not by the violent baud of disease, but simply from a wearing out of tbe machinery of life. He leaves behind him’a : pure,' Chris tian life—a rich legacy to his chil dren. To that fond, and loving wife who survives him, that dutiful son on whom be has leaned for support in declining years, and those affection ate daughters, we extend the sympa thy of a heart that feels .for them in their affliction, for in the death of Mr. Marlin the writer has lost a warm friends. Peace to his ashes. night on the steamer blander. They j he balance' tor a double-store two- landed at qr new Beaph crjek, and ba a&|f This property would miist have "hoc!' n pleash'nt time. foV ~ be in tbe name of tbe company, regu larly organized, with president and directors of their own number, who wonld assess each member in propor tion to his interest to defray the nec essary expenses of taxes, insurance, repairs, etc. We throw ont these suggestions, as we say, without giving names, hoping they may be taken and acted upon. Meanwhile, anyono wish ing to enter into such an arrangement can get our ideas in full by notifying us of snob desire. We have no axe to grind in this matter, but simply de sire the good of tbe town. In Pronpeot. We have been shown tbe plan for a handsome three story brick bedd ing to be erected on New Castle street. Below stairs will be three handsome stores, and over staires on two and three fiofirs a hotel with 31 nice rooms besides office, parlors, din ning room, olosets, bath room, trunk room, etc.: Sabh nu establishment properly bandied will prove a band- some investment to the builders. Tbe stores being of brick and well lo cated will rent for good prices and tbe hotel will readily find a tenant and prove a genuine attraction to that part of travel who prefer a quiet place to the more busy thing of larger hotels and at the Bame time be no hindrance to the same but rather a help. The day is not far distant when such a house will be a necessi ty for winter travel especially. We the project take trust poou to see shape. I - .!'*} * For children living in tenement buil dings aud croteded cities, where they cannot get the benefit of pure, exhila rating health-giving country air and travel, Teethina (Teething Powders), is invaluable. Burned to Death, In our last issue we welcomed to oiir midst Mr. N. 0. Greer of Pear son, Ga. In this, we perform a sad der duty, that of sympathizing with the stricken heart. For ere last Sat urdays paper reaobed many of its readers, that fond father was called oh to mourn tbe loss of his dear Bertha, a bright lovely child of eight years. It seems that Bertha and her sister Belle, who were still in Pearson, were spending the night with a mar ried sister, Mrs. Kirkland. During tbo.nigbt tbe house took fire and was destroyed. By the heroic effort on the part of young MoDonald, Belle was saved but little Bertha was Con sumed in tbe flames, So muoh of her body as was rescued from the ashes was brought to our city on Monday for interment.
