this time.: 1 .' IlY... “k-S £?'
The political wave has not yet
reached us. . We are all too busy to
talk politics.
When middle Georgians get the
billions fever they come to St. Simons
to recuperate. •
Lumber is cheap over here—a ne
gro shanty at constable’s sale brought
ouly ten dollars.
Over four million feet of good,
merchantable lumber in the yard at
St. Simons Mills. _
Some billions fever—very mild.—
Plenty of salt air and a little quinine,
and it disappears at once.
Miub is sick this week, so we omit
our usual story about "snakes and
other phenominal wonders.”
Thermometer lower on St. Simons
thau in Branswick by wtejal degreeb
during the whole of last summer.
Capt. Barney Dart, of tbe Rnby, is
bound to be the Commodore Vander
bilt of the South. We will prove it
next week.

Mr. Ellis Hunter, who, by tbe by,
uae been with as so much he looks
like an Islander, has some magnifi
cent stereoscopic views of different
objeots of special interest in St Si
mons and South Georgia. ~ !
The craze of the “United Supreme
Order of the Sons and Sisters of Ja
cob” has reached the Island. All tbe
colored fraternity and sistemity are
clamorons for admission. The Island
bids fair to become soon asocial
band of colored “brethering and en
tering. ”
Hurrah for John Currie 1 He makes
a success at whatever be attempts.—
He fills the market with good beef
and fat mutton, stocks the Island
with hogs, cows, horses and sheep,
and, lastly, he is offering to sell bug
gies so cheap that ho will make every
•id.m and his wife’s heads swim.
Mr. 8. A. Fogle, confidential clerk
in, I telegraph operator of St. Simons
Mills, who has, in his summer vuca-
tiou, been takiug in all tbe Northern
cities and sights, returns better
pleased than ever with our sunny isle.
To enjoy St. Suuuus, her quietude,
healthy clime aud seabreezes, it is on
ly uecessury to absent one’s self for
but a short time.
Mr. J. E. Young, the popular St.
Simons iuuibmuiati, who has been
rusticating among tbe peaceful shades
of Brunswick for some time, has re
turned to St. Simons. The fact is,
when wo go away, unless we have a
sweetheart somewhere else, we all
hasten back. We can't help it—no
place like tbe Island. And then her
people are so clever and hospitable.

Ji
Douglasville, Ga. ( Sept. 12, ’82.
Dear Advertiser and Appeal:
Here I am, almost in a twinkling
transferred from the salt-land to this
deligbtfnl place among the hills.
Now, when yonr typo sots this np, he
mast be sore .to spell the place with a
MWgla/'a!' for verily the’good people
are of that true southern faith and
doctrine that they want it known un
to the world that they are no ad
mirers of Fred Douglass or any of
bis kind, Imt the county (and u u<<-
ble little county it is) and town wish
to be known to the future as admirers
of that great statesman Stephen A.
Douglas, so familiarly known in his
day as the little giant.”
Douglasville is twelve hundred and
fifty feet above high tide level, sit
uated on one of the range of bigb
bills dividing tbe Chattahoochee am)
Tallapoosa rivers. The soil of the
neighboring lands, besides being com
posed of the usiixl Humous and vege
table debris, has sufficient silicalcare-
ous and granitic composition to ren
der it quite fertile and of easy tillage.
This is to have a clay foundation
certainly one of tbe cleanest places it
bus been my lot to visit Tbe granite
and sand on the surface being of a
white or cream color and too coarse to
be drifted ’by the mountain breezes
here so constant and so delightful,
this is in time, bound to be tbe city of
refuge to the weary uud careworn
housekeeper. The madame here is
not compelled to dust the parlor so
often or sweep the bouse u half dozen
times each day aud tbe linen can be
wprn from one to two days longer
than in tbe country of blaok soil.
Speaking of linen, would that some of
the Glynn county washerwomen
could come to this town by the moun
tains and take lessons in the art of
bringing linen from the laundry spot
less a? tbs driven show, as it is prac
ticed np here. And tbe water is
plentiful, cold enongb to make iced
lemonade without the ice, clear, and
with just a sufficiency of minerals in
solution to prevent the insipidity of
our sea board water. Fat chickens
ABjcfreeb eggs are abundant, tbe
former at 10 to 16 cents, the latter
from 8 to 12 cents per dozen. In
this climate, with her uititude, the
inherent essentials to cleanliness
(wbiok in the Materia Medica should
outrank tbe,pill box) tbe mountain
breezes and means of cheap living,
yonr correspondent feels safe in the
assertion that no place in Georgia
S resents better claims than tbe plucky
ttle town of Douglasville.
Bnt, Mr. Editor, fearing that yon
will feel that I commenced to travel at
the wrong end of my journey, I will
reverse and send a trace to the start
ing point. I left kind friends and the
noble old city of Branswick at 8:30
p. m., Thursday evening, and at the
same hour Friday I was among loved
micH at this place over three hundred
miles away. Owing to the efficient
niaiiiigemimt of the Georgia division
of the E. T., Ya., fi Ga. R. R., a very
great change has been effected in
Georgia travel. Everything is new
yet on this road, bnt admirably ar
ranged and when a little better or
ganized this will be the best road or
syatem of roads in tbe country. The
officers of every grade evince n degree
of vim, energy and judgement unsur
passed within our knowledge. For
instance, on tbe anniversary of the
day on which Major McCracken, civil
engineer, rode through Jackson on a
prospecting tour preparatory to a pre
liminary survey, the road was com
pleted from Macon to McDonough
and the train running a distance of
sixty-five miles, with steel rails, air
brakes and ail modern appurtenances,
and part of road laid with stone bal
last. The amount of work done will
be bolter appreciated when it is
known that tbe route was located
oiei a rongb, billy country, crossing
many oreess and ravines over which
fifty-two bridges were built, some of
them fifty feet bigb. In tbe one over
Pate’s Creek, seven hundred and
.twenty tboni'iuid feet of Intnber were
Hied, anyer, d beds of granite blasted
them, closely lasbed together their
caudal appendages, and then yoked through, etc. This wan all done in
them. He then turned them loose
aud cheap among his Etbiopiau
brothers for at least a week.

Dear Sir.—It gives me great pleas
ure to testify as to tbe merits of yonr
celebrated GILDER’S PILLS. They
have done more for me than any oth
er medicine I have ever taken. I have
tried, without success, the medicinal
virtues of several noted Springs, but
they failed to relieve and cure me as

hesitatingly pronounce them tbe best
