Mr. Editor .—-At your request I
ff ill endeavor to write you a short ar-
In<r too mnoh and thus oooopying too
much of your space in addition to
wearying the attention 1 of your
readers, I am aware is a verv difficult
matter. A popular fallacy has gone
abroad, not alone in other states but
even in our own State of ,Q( r — r
that Brunswick is unhealthy an
it is not safe for unacclimated persons
to come here during the summer
months.! This belief has arisen from
the fact that we have Iwdone epidem
ic of yellow fever. That wh have had
one epidemic is certainly a misfortune,
but tna$ we have bad but one in all the
years since Brunswick has been an
incorporated city, and with vessels
from all parts of the world constantly
coming into this harbor, shows very
forcibly in favor of the general health-
fulness of the place and to the. small
liability to the spread of epidemic
and contagious diseases.
A glance at the map will show that
the city of Brunswick is situated opoD
a peninsula, that it is almost entirely
surrounded by salt water and that
there ore no fresh water streams or
swamps within t welvo miles of the city,
This is positive eviden6e*of the free
dom of this city from malurions in
fluences wbiol). affect post localities
in warm climittes, ind of the f atmos
phere which is being constantly
changed and renewed by the delight
ful and health-giving sea. breeze.
This advantage of location combined
with thorough dr*hNp, and.fWfrli}
ness has rendered Brunswick one o'
the healthiest cities in the Union
Au active practice of my profession
running through a period of twenty
years certainly sbohld enable me to
speak with authority. Hence, I un
hesitatingly assert that the health of
Brunswick wfll compare very favora
bly with any other place with the
same diversity of population and
within the same latitude. There are
many places within'tho United States,
noted ns health resorts, which are far
more subject to serious diseases. The
population of Brunswick is very near
ly equally divided between the white
need never fear a repetition ol ...
overwhelming disaster of 1876. Peo-
>le abroad may rely upon it that
Jranswick is” now in a healthy con
dition and every effort is being made
to preserve health. And that, so far
a6 disease is concerned, they are free
to oome and reside here in safety at
all seasons of the year.
I regret that I have been compelled

of a place in your columns, you are

Where is thou another sen port city

ness than this? In other cities situa
ted upon or near fresh water rivers,
it is impossible for seaman to sleep
on board of their vessels becanso of
the danger of death from malarial
causes, and owners of vessels incur
the expense of boarding their crews
ou shore rather than run so great a
risk, whilst in this port seamen sleep
ou board of their ships with perfect
