City PI tbs doail'wandered among
its moss-covered .vaults, monuments
ited inscriptions, and re-
most'obi:
calling to mind the personages and
character of many known to ourself
in the days of ont childhood., , Here
we saw imines familiar to many ofonr
readers—the Joneses, Walt hours,
Screvens, LeConts, Varnailoos, Ba
cons, Mallards, Flemings, Stncys,
Quarterinans, Ways, Kings, Stevenses
and scores of othors not familiar to
the writer, having lived a centnry or
more before his day. Here we saw
two wooden slabs that must have
stood the weather for over one hun
dred years. They are of the heart of
black cypress, and rests,
parallel with the grave on standards
of the same material,'driven into the
gronnd. They look to-day just as they
did to us thirty years ago when we
were a hoy, and must have boon
placed there shortly after the year
1770, for on both can be seen, besides
other inscriptions, ‘‘Mary Quarter-
man, wife of Robert Quarterraan,
died 1770.” This wood is knowu to
outlast aiiy other to bo found in these
parts, and if paiuted occasionally we
should judge would uover rot. The
old church is now occupied by the'j
colored peffple'wbff'h'ave, us their pas
tor Rev. f. H. T. White, well known
to most of our. readers, and just lure
we wish tq add that in this matte*
these people Rave lost nothing by the
(Change of circutpstauces. For whilst
they have not now, as did their fore
fathers, the services of that grand old
preacher, Rev. C. C. Jones, who was
employed by the whites to preach to
the colored people and teach them the
ebateebism, they have a man and
minister whose whole soul is in bis
work and whoso teaching is felt by
tho people of his charge. His mem
